Use FFmpeg’s acrossfade audio filter to blend the end of one prerecorded podcast episode into the next, then encode the resulting program and send it to YouTube Live. The crossfade handles audio transitions; YouTube’s ingest settings apply to the finished live stream. Because the right command depends on your audio files and visual source, build and test an adaptable filtergraph rather than relying on one universal command.
What the crossfade filter does
FFmpeg’s acrossfade filter fades between audio inputs, with controls for transition length, overlap, and fade curves. It does not, by itself, create a complete YouTube Live stream: you still need to encode the program, supply any required video, and connect to YouTube’s ingest endpoint.

FFmpeg documents a default crossfade length of 44,100 samples, equivalent to one second at 44.1 kHz. That default is not a recommended podcast transition length. Choose a duration that suits the material and listen to the transition before going live. See the FFmpeg filter documentation.
Prepare the episodes and choose a transition
- Identify the inputs. Note each filename and confirm which audio streams you intend to use. The filtergraph must match the files’ stream layouts.
- Choose a transition point and duration.
acrossfadeworks near the end of the first input. Preview the transition and adjust its length for the episode content; the documentation does not prescribe a podcast-specific duration. - Decide whether the audio overlaps. Overlap is enabled by default. Set
o=0if you specifically need to disable overlap.

ffmpeg -i first.flac -i second.flac -filter_complex acrossfade=d=10:c1=exp:c2=exp output.flac
It crossfades two audio files over 10 seconds using exponential curves for both inputs. This creates an output audio file; it is not a YouTube Live command. Replace the example filenames and output format as appropriate, and test the result before using it in a live workflow.

Options to tune
dorduration: crossfade duration. When set, it takes precedence over the sample-count setting.nb_samplesorns: crossfade length in samples. The documented default is 44,100 samples.ooroverlap: whether the first stream’s end overlaps the second stream’s beginning; enabled by default.c1andc2, also namedcurve1andcurve2: the transition curves. FFmpeg describes available curve types under itsafadefilter documentation.norinputs: number of inputs to crossfade in sequence; the default is two.
Chain several episodes
For a sequence of three episodes, FFmpeg’s documentation shows that acrossfade can take an inputs value of three:

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
This illustrates sequential crossfading, not a complete live-broadcast command. For a larger playlist, make sure the number and order of inputs in the command match the episodes you intend to play, then listen through transitions before connecting the result to a live encoder.
Send the finished program to YouTube Live
There is no single safe FFmpeg command that fits every combination of audio files, visual source, container, and stream layout. Build the live command around your actual inputs: the audio filtergraph, a still image or video if needed, the chosen encoder settings, and the ingest URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Never publish or share a real stream key.

Choose the ingest protocol
YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. The RTMPS connection requires a valid protocol, server endpoint, and path, and uses port 443. Use the endpoint and stream key provided in YouTube Live Control Room; see Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
YouTube also documents HLS ingestion as a separate option. It requires an HLS-compatible setup: TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and segment durations between one and four seconds. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. Do not mix HLS requirements into an RTMPS command. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Match the encoded output to YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant-bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It lists stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. For 5.1 audio, it lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps, with 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS supported only for AAC. These are YouTube configuration recommendations, not a guarantee of a particular podcast outcome.
Video bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Choose the matching row in YouTube’s current live encoder settings rather than treating one bitrate as universal. The same page says YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test and monitor the broadcast
- Test before the event. Send a test with audio and movement representative of the planned stream, including the episode transition.
- Check stream health. During the test and broadcast, monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages and address any reported issues.
- Listen to the handoff. Confirm that the transition sounds right in the encoded output, not just in the separate audio files.
YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health during the event. Its guidance is available at YouTube’s encoder settings page.

- The transition is abrupt or too long: adjust
dto change the crossfade duration, then preview the output. The default is one second, not a podcast-specific target. - The command produces a file but does not go live: the documented file-to-file example only creates audio output. A live setup also needs an encoded program, any intended visual input, and a valid YouTube ingest endpoint and stream key.
- The stream does not connect over RTMPS: verify that the protocol, server endpoint, and path are valid and that you are using the details from YouTube Live Control Room. RTMPS uses port 443.
- YouTube reports an encoder or stream-health issue: compare the output against YouTube’s current guidance for codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, frame rate, and audio configuration. Check the bitrate row for the specific codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- A multi-episode filtergraph fails: check that its input count and ordering match the files supplied, and verify that the intended audio streams are present.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded programming live on YouTube without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast live camera footage. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, it streams your upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
