Install the Streamlabs Plugin for OBS on a compatible Windows PC, sign in through its setup window, then add widgets, overlays, labels, or docks from OBS’s Streamlabs menu. It adds selected Streamlabs tools to OBS Studio; it is not Streamlabs Desktop. Streamlabs’ quick start, published May 20, 2026, lists Windows and OBS Studio 28.0.0 or later as requirements. Check Streamlabs’ current plugin instructions before installing, since compatibility and features can change.
Before you install the plugin
- Operating system: The plugin is Windows-only. Streamlabs’ product page specifies Windows 10/11 or better; its May 20, 2026 quick start says Windows. It is not the Mac version of OBS.
- OBS Studio: Use version 28.0.0 or later, as specified in Streamlabs’ May 20, 2026 quick start. Check your installed version in OBS before proceeding.
- Installer: Download the plugin installer from Streamlabs’ official site. The installer is designed to find the OBS folder and install the plugin files.
- Account: Be ready to sign in or connect the streaming platform requested by the onboarding flow. Streamlabs’ detailed guide describes sign-in with a Streamlabs ID or a preferred streaming platform; follow the current prompts.
You do not need Streamlabs Desktop to use the plugin. It is intended for people who want to keep an existing OBS Studio workflow while adding selected Streamlabs tools.
Install and set up the plugin
- Download and run the installer from Streamlabs’ plugin page. Follow the setup prompts; the installer should locate your OBS installation.
- Open OBS Studio. In the plugin onboarding window, choose Log In & Get Started, then complete the sign-in or platform connection steps shown.
- If OBS asks to restart—such as after adding an overlay—save your work and restart it. Some changes do not appear until OBS is reopened.
- Confirm that the top menu contains Streamlabs. If it does not, close OBS completely and reopen it once before troubleshooting the installation.
Add and test widgets and alerts
- In OBS, open Streamlabs > Widgets.
- Choose the widget you want and select + Add. The plugin adds it to the canvas as a browser source.
- In the OBS Sources list, move the widget source above gameplay or other full-screen sources. A source lower in the stack can be hidden behind them.
- Return to the Widgets area, open Test Events, hover over the relevant platform, and select the test event you want to preview.
- To change a widget’s settings, use its gear/settings control. Streamlabs opens a browser window for editing; widget details are not edited directly in the plugin interface.
Test the alert in every scene where it will be used. A source added to one scene may not be present in another, and source ordering is scene-specific.
Install an overlay
- Open Streamlabs in OBS and select Overlay.
- Find the overlay you want and choose Select & Install.
- If OBS prompts for a restart, follow the prompt, then inspect the overlay in each relevant scene and adjust its source order as needed.
If you would rather not install the plugin, Streamlabs also documents importing a scene collection as an overlay route. See its overlay instructions for that option. Browser sources are another way to use selected widgets without the plugin.

What the plugin includes—and what it does not
Streamlabs describes the plugin as an add-on that brings selected tools such as overlays, widgets, Stream Labels, and related features into OBS Studio. Its detailed guide also lists tools including Recent Events, Cloudbot, an overlay library, and tipping. The available tools can depend on current account, plan, and product conditions.
The plugin is free to download and use, but some capabilities are plan-dependent. Streamlabs says server-side multistreaming and premium overlays require Streamlabs Ultra. Its guide also says the plugin does not provide Shared Storage, Dual Output for vertical/horizontal multistreaming, or Collab Cam; Streamlabs points people seeking those features toward Streamlabs Desktop. Check the current product pages for the latest feature and plan terms.

Update or troubleshoot the plugin
The Streamlabs menu or plugin docks are missing
- Restart OBS, then check the top menu again.
- For missing Chat or Activity Feed docks, use Streamlabs > Settings > Danger Zone > Restore Plugin Docks.
- If the Streamlabs menu itself remains absent, verify that you installed the plugin into the OBS installation you actually launch and that your OBS version meets the documented requirement. Re-run the official installer if necessary.
An alert does not appear over gameplay
- Confirm the widget was added through Streamlabs > Widgets > + Add.
- Move its source above gameplay and other covering sources in that scene’s Sources list.
- Use Test Events to determine whether the widget can display an event before going live.
- Check the widget settings in the browser window opened by its gear control, and verify that the intended platform/account is connected.
An overlay change is not visible
Follow any restart prompt from OBS, then check that the overlay source is enabled and visible in the current scene. If you use multiple scenes, verify the overlay has been added to each one where you expect it.
A label disappeared or will not edit
Check the scene’s Sources list: removing a label source from a scene is separate from deleting it from the Stream Labels list. Use the label’s three-dot menu to edit it or remove it from the list.

How updates work
Streamlabs says the plugin checks for updates when OBS launches and prompts when an update is available. Its update instructions also describe a manual update route. Follow the latest official update guide rather than relying on a version number that may have changed.
