Switch the unit off before sliding the barrel down to release the curl. Shark’s guidance supports these techniques, but does not promise a fixed number of hours of hold.
Before you begin: prepare your hair and FlexStyle
Use the Auto-Wrap Curlers, not a different FlexStyle attachment. Shark’s US HD430 and HD435 product pages list two 1.25-inch Auto-Wrap Curlers that make curls in opposite directions. Check the attachments included with your own set; bundles can vary.

Detangle your hair and let it dry until it is slightly damp, around 80–90% dry. Shark gives this as a recommended starting point and notes that hair that is too wet is harder to curl. You can adjust the moisture level to see what works for your hair, but do not begin with soaking-wet hair. Shark’s official UK styling guide and FlexStyle FAQ provide these starting instructions.
Separate the top and bottom portions of your hair so you can work in manageable sections. Have both barrels nearby, and choose the one that will curl the section in the direction you want.

How to curl each section
- Choose a barrel and section. Select the left- or right-direction barrel for the curl direction you want. Take a small section; if the hair is difficult to wrap, make the section smaller. Line up at least 10 cm of the section’s ends with the arrow on the barrel, as Shark’s styling directions specify.
- Position the hair. Hold the section near its middle, with the ends in front of the upright barrel. Keep the wand upright and close enough for the airflow to catch the ends.
- Let airflow wrap the hair. Turn on the FlexStyle and guide the ends toward the barrel. As airflow catches and wraps them, move the section toward your head so the hair continues winding around the barrel. Shark calls this automatic wrapping Coanda Technology. Avoid winding the section around the barrel by hand.
- Apply heat. Once the section is wrapped, hold it in place for 10 seconds. Shark’s FAQ recommends high airflow and high heat for the Auto-Wrap Curlers.
- Cool the curl. While the hair remains wrapped, press and hold Cool Shot for 10 seconds. Shark says the cool air helps set the shape and supports longer-lasting curls.
- Release safely. Switch the FlexStyle off, then pull the barrel straight down to release the curl. Repeat with the remaining sections, choosing the opposite barrel when you want the curl to turn the other way.
Finish without undoing the curl
After releasing a curl, handle it gently while you finish the rest of your hair. Shark’s guide suggests using setting or holding spray after removing the hair from the barrel, if desired. It is optional; the guide does not specify a particular product or claim that spray guarantees a certain wear time.
Adjust the technique when wrapping is difficult
- The hair will not catch or wrap: Check that the ends are aligned with the barrel arrow and that the section is small enough for airflow to gather. If your hair is still very wet, dry it further; Shark recommends beginning around 80–90% dry.
- The curl direction is wrong: Switch to the barrel for the opposite direction. The two Auto-Wrap Curlers are designed to create opposite curl directions.
- You are unsure about dampness: Use 80–90% dry as the starting recommendation, then make modest adjustments for your hair type. Shark does not publish a controlled comparison showing which moisture level produces the longest hold for each hair type.
What “long-lasting” means here
Shark’s official instructions specifically recommend a heat hold followed by Cool Shot and describe Cool Shot as helping curls last longer. They do not establish a guaranteed duration or a tested number of hours. Results can vary with hair and styling conditions, so treat the steps as technique guidance rather than a wear-time promise.

Shark also says its FlexStyle system measures and regulates temperature 1,000 times per second on its product pages. That is a manufacturer specification, not independent evidence that heat damage is impossible; it should not be read as an absolute safety guarantee.
