Start by finding out what is slowing the PC, then use Windows’ built-in tools to address that cause. Check Task Manager, reduce only unnecessary startup apps, review storage, install relevant updates, scan for malware, and restart. These steps can help when the cause is software or a full drive, but they cannot guarantee a fix for aging or underpowered hardware.
First, identify when the PC is slow
“Slow” can mean a long startup, sluggish app launches, lag while multitasking, or general pauses. Note when it happens before changing settings: a problem that appears mainly during startup points to a different cause than slow file or app loading.

Open Task Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting Task Manager. Review Processes for apps using substantial resources, Performance for CPU, memory, and disk activity, and Startup apps for programs that run when you sign in. These views can suggest where to investigate; one busy reading by itself does not prove the cause. Microsoft’s performance guide recommends checking resource-heavy processes and trying steps that match the problem.

Apps that launch at sign-in can make startup take longer and continue using resources in the background. Disable only programs you recognize and do not need immediately after signing in; do not turn off everything just to shorten the list.

- In Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Startup, then switch off a known, nonessential app.
- Or right-click Start, choose Task Manager > Startup apps, select a known app, and choose Disable. Use the startup-impact information to help prioritize what to review.
Labels and layout can differ in Windows 10 or other versions. If a route does not match your screen, search Settings for “Startup apps.” Microsoft’s startup-app guidance describes both controls. Avoid registry edits: Microsoft warns they can cause unintended consequences.
Free space with Windows’ storage tools
A drive with little free space can contribute to performance and update problems. In Windows, go to Settings > System > Storage. Review the categories and cleanup suggestions before removing anything.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Storage Sense: Run it or configure it to remove eligible temporary files and Recycle Bin contents. Check its settings so you know what will be deleted.
- Temporary files and cleanup recommendations: Inspect the items Windows identifies and select only those you intend to remove. Pay particular attention to personal files and previous Windows installations; deleting them may remove data or recovery options you want to keep.
- Disk Cleanup: Search for “Disk Cleanup” from Start for another built-in way to review and remove selected files.
Microsoft explains these options in its Windows storage guidance. If you do not recognize an item, leave it in place until you understand what it contains.
Install available updates selectively
Open Settings > Windows Update and check for available updates. Updates may include fixes or performance improvements. If Windows offers optional driver updates, review them for relevance to your device rather than installing every optional item automatically. Microsoft’s Windows Update instructions explain how to check for updates.

Run a Windows Security quick scan
Malware can use CPU and disk resources. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Quick scan and let the scan finish. If it finds a threat, follow the actions Windows Security presents. Microsoft provides details in its virus and threat protection guidance.
Close what you are not using, then restart
Close apps and browser tabs you do not need, especially if Task Manager showed high memory or CPU use while they were open. Save your work, restart the PC, and check whether the specific symptom you noted—such as slow sign-in or lag while multitasking—has changed. Microsoft includes closing unneeded apps and restarting among its performance recommendations.

Recheck Task Manager before considering hardware
After these steps, look again at Task Manager during the activity that still feels slow. If disk use and slow file or app loading remain the clear problem, check whether the PC has a hard disk drive (HDD). Microsoft says HDD storage is typically slower to use than SSD or eMMC storage in its storage guidance. A compatible SSD may be worth investigating when an HDD is the bottleneck, but the cited guidance does not establish a guaranteed speed gain for a particular PC.
Before buying or installing a drive, verify that the exact computer supports the drive type and form factor; compatibility depends on the device. If the persistent bottleneck is memory, CPU, or broader hardware age instead, an SSD may not address it. Consider whether repair is practical for the computer’s remaining useful life rather than assuming a software cleanup—or one upgrade—will restore it.
Know the Windows 10 support situation
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. It no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. A performance cleanup does not change that support status; see Microsoft’s Windows 10 support information.
Keep resets as a last resort
Resetting Windows is not routine cleanup. Microsoft cautions that reset options can remove apps, settings, or personal files. If you are considering it, back up important data first and follow Microsoft’s full recovery options guidance and Reset your PC instructions.
