To capture a webpage with Screenshotlayer, send a request to its /api/capture endpoint with your account’s access_key and a target url that includes https:// or http://. Add options such as viewport or fullpage=1 to control the capture. Screenshotlayer documents PNG as the default output; check its current interactive documentation for response handling and plan-specific options before wiring the request into an application.
Make a basic Screenshotlayer API request
The documented endpoint is http://api.screenshotlayer.com/api/capture. Screenshotlayer says paid customers may use the HTTPS endpoint; check your plan’s eligibility and current service behavior before relying on it. The target URL must include its protocol. For a request over HTTPS, the illustrative URL shape is:

Node.js
This example uses Node.js’s built-in fetch. It checks the HTTP status and saves the response bytes. Confirm the endpoint’s current response format before assigning a file extension or processing the body as an image.

Choose the capture dimensions and length
Viewport size
The viewport parameter sets the browser viewport in pixels. Screenshotlayer documents 1440x900 as its default. Specify a size when you need a predictable desktop or mobile layout; a mobile-sized viewport can trigger a responsive design, but the exact result depends on the page.
Full-page capture
Set fullpage=1 to request a capture of the page’s full height rather than only the visible viewport. Long pages can produce much taller images, so consider whether your downstream storage or image-processing steps can accommodate them.

Thumbnail width
The width parameter specifies a thumbnail width in pixels. Use it when you need a smaller-width result, and confirm how the service combines it with other dimensions in the current API documentation.

Select output format and capture timing
Image format
The API specifications identify PNG as the default. Screenshotlayer’s pricing page lists PNG, JPEG, and GIF, and separately advertises WebP on paid plans. Because format availability may depend on the active plan, check the current plan details before requesting a non-default format.
Delay before capture
The optional delay parameter waits before the screenshot is taken. A delay may help pages that render content after initial load, but the available documentation does not establish a guaranteed range or guarantee that a particular dynamic element will finish loading. Test against the page and timing you need.
Cache lifetime and fresh captures
The documented default ttl is 2,592,000 seconds (30 days). Use ttl to set cache lifetime, and force when you need to request a fresh capture rather than reuse a cached snapshot. Verify accepted values and their interaction in the current specification.
Customize the request
css_url: provide a custom stylesheet for the captured page.user_agent: set the browser user agent; this can be useful for requesting a mobile layout.accept_lang: supply a language preference. The official homepage shows a mobile user-agent and language example.export: request an export destination such as FTP or S3 where supported. Available export options vary by plan, so check the current pricing details.

Check account access, quota, and plan fit
Screenshotlayer’s FAQ says the access key is available in the account dashboard. Keep it secret and use a server-side request or a protected secret store rather than exposing it in a public webpage or mobile app.
When accessed on October 3, 2026, Screenshotlayer’s official pricing page advertised the following monthly allowances and prices. These are the vendor’s listed plan terms at that time, not a guarantee of current pricing; check the live pricing page and your account dashboard before choosing a tier.

The pricing page says overage charges may apply after an allowance is reached. Its FAQ says quota notices are sent at 75%, 90%, and 100%, and that overage fees apply after the limit. Confirm the active account’s billing terms rather than assuming those policies or prices have not changed.
Screenshotlayer describes dedicated workers as capacity for concurrent captures: each worker handles one screenshot task, and a plan’s worker count permits that many simultaneous captures. This is the vendor’s description of plan capacity, not an independent performance measurement. The FAQ gives about 99.9% uptime as a vendor-stated figure and says public uptime statistics are not offered; it should not be treated as independently verified uptime.
Troubleshoot common request failures
- Missing or invalid access key: confirm that the key is present, copied correctly, and active in your account dashboard. Do not add extra spaces or publish the secret.
- Invalid URL: include the target’s protocol, such as
https://example.com, and ensure the URL is properly encoded as a query parameter. - Monthly allowance reached: check usage and billing terms in your account dashboard. If you need more captures, review the current plan options and overage policy.
- Invalid API function: check that the request uses the documented
/api/capturepath and that parameter names are spelled correctly. - Unexpected or unusable response: do not assume every client receives JSON, a URL, or a particular image encoding. Check the current interactive documentation and inspect the HTTP status and response headers before saving or processing the body.
- Page content is missing: try an appropriate
delayfor late-rendering content, then test again. A delay is not a guarantee that all scripts, images, or dynamic content will be ready. - Changes do not appear: inspect the request’s
ttland whether a cached result is being reused; useforcewhen a fresh capture is required.
