Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo show the track playing in a 24/7 YouTube stream, read the song’s metadata from the audio source and display it in the stream picture as an OBS text or browser overlay. The label must be connected to the player or playout system: YouTube’s Music section is not a creator-controlled, per-track live overlay. If your audio plays locally through VLC, an OBS community add-on can read tags such as title and artist; browser audio and other players need a compatible integration of their own.
What a now-playing label needs
A label updates only when something can identify the current track and pass that information to the visual layer. The usual chain is: audio player or playout service, track metadata, then a text or browser element in the live scene. The label is part of the stream’s picture; it is separate from the audio itself and from YouTube’s track-identification features.

First identify how your music reaches the stream: local files in a VLC source, another desktop player, browser audio such as YouTube Music, or a hosted playout service. A VLC-specific OBS script should not be assumed to read a browser tab or every other player.

For local audio files played through VLC in OBS, the OBS Python VLC Now Playing Monitor is one documented example. Its resource page says it detects the song from a VLC video source, reads audio metadata including title, artist, and album, and can optionally save the current song to a text file. It lists MP3, FLAC, OGG, M4A, WAV, OPUS, and AAC support, and falls back to the filename when metadata is unavailable. Check the VLC Now Playing Monitor resource page for its current instructions and compatibility details.

1. Check the audio tags
Before configuring an overlay, confirm that each file has the title and artist fields you want displayed. If tags are absent or incomplete, the script may show a filename instead, and that fallback may not be a useful track label.
2. Confirm the script requirements
The cited resource lists Linux, OBS 27.0 or higher with Python scripting enabled, and Mutagen as optional but recommended. These are the resource’s listed requirements, not a guarantee that the add-on remains compatible with every current system. Check its latest installation notes, supported environment, and maintenance status before relying on it for unattended streaming.

3. Connect the current-track output to the scene
Follow the integration’s instructions to select the VLC source and, if you use its text-file output, connect that output to a text source in your OBS scene. The OBS Forums resource Tuna is another community-documented route that describes selecting VLC as the music source. Consult its current plugin and source-integration instructions rather than assuming it works with every OBS setup: OBS Forums: Tuna.

4. Make the label readable
Place the text where it does not obscure the relaxation visual, and use sufficient contrast and a legible size for the scene. Keep the format short, for example, title followed by artist. These are layout choices, not a universal OBS preset; check the result against the actual background and video dimensions.

5. Check track changes before leaving it unattended
Run through several tracks and confirm that the label changes at the right time. Also check what appears when a track has missing tags, a long title, or unusual characters. Correct file metadata or adjust the text presentation if the output is incomplete or hard to read.
What if the music plays in a browser or YouTube Music?
The VLC add-on described above is specific to a VLC source; the available documentation does not establish that it can read audio playing in a browser or YouTube Music. For those sources, use a now-playing integration that explicitly supports the player or the playout system delivering the audio. Verify that it can access track metadata and update a text or browser overlay before depending on it for a continuous stream. Do not infer compatibility simply because the browser audio is audible in OBS.

Other ways to display the track
| Approach | What it can do | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| OBS with a VLC metadata add-on | The cited VLC script reads supported file tags, detects song changes, and can export the current song to text; Tuna also documents VLC as a music-source option. VLC Now Playing Monitor · Tuna | Current maintenance, operating system and OBS/Python compatibility, missing-metadata behavior, and how output reaches the scene. |
| Hosted playout with a now-playing overlay | playout.video describes an automatically updated now-playing overlay for a live channel. Read its overlay guide. | The cited vendor page does not establish performance, terms, price, suitability for your channel, or the details of its rights workflow. Confirm YouTube support and current features with the service. |
| YouTube Music section | YouTube may automatically show identified music information on some video watch pages. | It is not documented as a creator-controlled, per-track live visual overlay, and coverage can be incomplete. |
Why YouTube’s Music section is different
YouTube says, “This section shows info about the music heard in the video, like song and artist names.” Its Music section may display details when a song is claimed through YouTube’s copyright-management tools or comes from the YouTube Audio Library. YouTube also says details may be missing when rights-holder data is insufficient, identification is incomplete, a claim is recent, or the video is marked Made for Kids. It is therefore not a dependable way to put a changing track label into your live picture. See YouTube Help: Music in this video.
Track labels do not grant music rights
Displaying a song title or artist does not give you permission to use the music in a live stream. YouTube for Artists recommends coordinating with a label or distributor when using copyright-protected music during a live stream to avoid issues such as copyright strikes. Resolve the rights question separately from the overlay setup; see YouTube for Artists: Music rights.
