Install Reddit from your device’s official app store, then use the community drawer and profile menu to find communities, saved items, and settings. This guide covers the main iOS and Android paths, including feed recommendations, video controls, blocking, chat privacy, and mature-content settings.
Download Reddit and check whether your phone is supported
Get the official Reddit app from the App Store on iOS or Google Play on Android. Avoid unofficial download sites.

Reddit’s minimum-support table, updated June 18, 2026, lists Android 10 with app version 2026.10 and iOS 16 with app version 2025.33. These are date-sensitive minimums, not a guarantee that every feature works on every device. Reddit warns that older operating systems may have bugs or may not be able to download newer app versions; if your device is below the listed minimum, use Reddit on the mobile web instead. Open the community drawer by swiping right from the left edge of the screen or tapping the menu icon in the upper-left corner. It brings together recently visited communities, favorites, communities you’ve joined, custom feeds, followed users, and moderator resources if you moderate. Reddit’s community guide explains how to access and manage these areas.

To put a community in easier reach, add it to your favorites. The drawer is also a useful alternative to searching each time you want to switch between a joined community and a custom feed.
Turn off recommended posts in Home
If you want Home to focus on communities you follow, disable recommendations. The setting’s wording and route differ by platform:

- iOS: Tap your avatar → menu → Settings → your username under Account Settings → Privacy → turn off “Show recommendations in home feed.”
- Android: Tap your avatar → menu → Settings → account settings under General → Privacy → turn off “Enable home feed recommendations.”

Find saved posts, comments, and your history
Tap your avatar, open the menu, and choose Saved to find saved posts and comments. To review your own activity, open your profile and use the Posts and Comments tabs. These routes are documented in Reddit’s iOS and Android app FAQs.

Choose which notifications you receive
Open your avatar menu, go to Settings, then find the account’s notification-management controls. The exact labels differ between iOS and Android; Reddit lists the platform-specific routes in its iOS FAQ and Android FAQ. Use these controls to select which notification types you want rather than disabling notifications wholesale.
Set dark mode and video behavior
Dark mode
Both apps provide a dark-mode control in Settings. Android also offers automatic dark mode, which can follow the device’s appearance or sunrise and sunset; Reddit’s Android instructions say the Dark Mode toggle must be off to use the automatic option. The iOS FAQ documents dark mode but not this automatic schedule. See the relevant iOS or Android FAQ for the controls.

Stop videos from autoplaying
On either platform, open Settings → Accessibility → Media and animations to adjust autoplay. To control sound by default, iOS has a “Mute videos by default” setting. Android remembers the last mute setting you used on an in-feed video, rather than offering that same dedicated default-mute control. Reddit documents these differences in its iOS and Android FAQs.

Mute a community or block a person
Mute a subreddit
Open the community’s page, tap its overflow menu, and choose Mute. Reddit says muted communities stop appearing in your feeds, but you can still visit them directly. Muting changes what appears in your feeds; it does not remove your access to the community.

Block a redditor
Open the person’s profile, tap the overflow menu, and choose the block action. Reddit’s Android FAQ says blocking prevents that person’s posts and comments from being shown. The account-management path differs by platform, so consult the relevant iOS or Android FAQ if the label or menu location on your app differs.
Control who can send you chat requests
Reddit Chat is where direct messages are handled. In account settings, open the safety or chat-permissions controls to choose who may send requests. Available choices documented by Reddit include everyone, accounts older than 30 days, nobody, or an allowlist where available. You can also choose inbox-only notification delivery, accept or ignore requests, and hide chats. Reddit’s chat privacy guidance notes that users under 18 have requests set to Nobody by default, and moderators or admins may still send requests when other requests are restricted. Adjust mature-content settings by platform
The control is not in the same place on iOS and Android, so follow the instructions for your device rather than trying to use one platform’s route on the other.
