A tracking feed with no new scan for seven days does not prove that a parcel has stopped moving. Carriers report events when packages are scanned; a shipment can travel between scan locations—or wait for a carrier handoff—without a fresh event appearing. Treat seven days as a prompt to check context, not a verdict that a parcel is lost.
Why a parcel can move while tracking stays quiet
Tracking is an event record, not a continuous view of a parcel’s location. UPS says long-distance packages can remain “On the Way” for several days before the next scan location, and that updates may not appear until the package reaches it. FedEx likewise says scan frequency varies and that a shipment can go more than 24 hours without an update in transit. Those explanations make a seven-day silence an imperfect proxy for inactivity; they do not establish that every seven-day gap is normal.

A handoff can create another quiet interval. A status showing that a shipping partner has the parcel, or that USPS is awaiting an item, is not the same as confirmation that USPS has received it. The label may exist before the parcel is physically tendered to the carrier.

Keep the carrier’s original event text and classify it before applying an inactivity rule. These categories are operational distinctions, not interchangeable descriptions of the same condition.

- Label created or preshipment: USPS defines “Shipping Label Created, USPS Awaiting Item” as a label being created while USPS has not yet received the package.
- Shipping partner or handoff: A partner-related status can mean USPS does not have possession yet. The next useful update may depend on the handoff reaching USPS.
- Carrier possession or in transit: A quiet interval after a carrier has the parcel should be evaluated against that service’s scans, estimated delivery date, and any later event.
- Exception or attempted delivery: Treat these as actionable events rather than ordinary scan silence; they may call for a different notification or support workflow.
USPS notes that users may receive no update message when there is no new shipment event. Its status guidance also directs customers to contact the shipper when USPS is awaiting an item from a shipping partner. See USPS Tracking: The Basics and USPS tracking status help.
Why one seven-day threshold can create false alarms
A single threshold ignores differences in carrier, route, shipment leg, and status. In a 2026 post, tracking provider 24hTrack reported that 27% of delivered parcels in its own 120-day platform dataset had at least one longest gap between consecutive carrier scans of seven days or more. The same analysis reported a median longest gap of 4.1 days, a 90th percentile of 10.3 days, and a 95th percentile of 13.1 days. These are provider-reported figures from its delivered-parcel dataset, not an independently validated industry rate; they should not be generalized across carriers, regions, or parcel volumes. The figures illustrate the design problem: even among parcels that were ultimately delivered, long scan gaps occurred in that dataset. They do not tell you whether a particular shipment is safe to ignore, nor do they establish a universal replacement threshold.
Build alerts around status and shipment history
Separate elapsed-time alerts from actionable events
Use explicit exceptions, delivery attempts, and meaningful status changes to trigger the alerts that need immediate attention. A timer can flag a shipment for review, but it should not label it lost on its own. Keep preshipment and handoff states distinct from in-transit states so the timer measures the kind of silence you actually intend to monitor.

Calibrate thresholds from completed deliveries
If your system has enough history, start with delivered shipments and calculate each shipment’s longest interval between consecutive scans. Examine that distribution by carrier and, where the data supports it, by route or shipment leg. A threshold based on a chosen percentile makes the trade-off visible: a lower cutoff catches more unusual gaps but can create more false alarms; a higher cutoff reduces those alarms but may delay review. This is a tracking-provider proposal, not an official carrier standard or independently validated best practice.
Recheck the distribution as your shipment mix and event data change. Preserve raw carrier events and record which status and carrier produced each alert; otherwise, it is difficult to distinguish a genuine change in delivery behavior from a change in how events are mapped or reported.

Check the data available from a tracking provider
If you rely on an API or tracking platform, assess whether it supports the distinctions your rules need. Useful capabilities include carrier and geographic coverage, raw event text and exception details, multi-carrier handoff events, completed-delivery history for calibration, and notification or integration options. The available evidence supports comparing these capabilities, not ranking providers.
What to tell a customer when the alert fires
Report what is known rather than declaring a parcel lost solely because seven days elapsed. Give the last carrier-reported event and its date, check the carrier’s current status and estimated delivery information, and explain what event would prompt follow-up. Avoid promising that a particular number of quiet days is normal for every route.
For recipients, the carrier’s own tracking page is the best place to confirm the latest status and estimate. FedEx’s U.S. guidance explains that scan frequency varies; procedures and status meanings can differ by country and service.
