The Grand Exchange (GE) lets you buy and sell tradeable items in Old School RuneScape without meeting another player. Choose an item and price, place a buy or sell offer, then collect coins or items when it completes. Offers can fill in part or in full; the main things to check are whether an item is tradeable, your account’s access, its buy limit, and the offers currently available.
What the Grand Exchange does
The GE is an in-game marketplace in Varrock. A buy offer says how much you are willing to pay for an item; a sell offer sets the price at which you are willing to part with it. When a buy offer meets an available sell offer, the trade can complete. You do not need to find or meet the other player.

Offers may complete only in part if there are not enough matching items or coins available. Completed purchases and sale proceeds wait for you to collect through the GE’s bank collection interface.

Check access and item eligibility
- Location: The Grand Exchange is in Varrock.
- Free accounts: The OSRS Wiki’s reference describes three offer slots and access to free-to-play items only.
- Members: The reference describes eight offer slots.
- Ironman accounts: The GE interface is restricted to bonds.
- Item eligibility: Not every item can be traded through the GE. Check the item in the current game interface before planning a transaction.
Account restrictions and available slots can change; confirm what your account can use in the current game UI. [OSRS Wiki: Grand Exchange]

Place a buy or sell offer
- Open the Grand Exchange interface at the GE in Varrock.
- Select an empty offer slot and choose whether to buy or sell.
- Choose the item and quantity. Confirm that the item is tradeable and check any buy limit that applies to your account.
- Set your price. The guide price is a reference, not a guaranteed current price or fill. You can set a price nearer to available opposing offers to make an offer more competitive, or choose a less competitive price and wait.
- Confirm the offer and check its status in the GE interface. It may complete fully, partially, or remain open while it waits for a match.
- Collect the result through the GE’s bank collection interface when the offer has completed. A purchase returns items; a sale returns coins after applicable tax.
Choose a price with the live market in mind
The guide price is not a promise that an item will buy or sell at that amount. Matching depends on opposing offers available when a trade executes. A buy offer priced at or above an available sell offer can match; a more competitive offer may complete sooner, while one set farther from available offers may wait. This is a speed-versus-price choice, not a guaranteed completion time.
Jagex announced on 30 September 2026 that guide prices can change by up to 20%, rather than 5%, and that updates would occur every three hours instead of every 24 hours. Jagex also said lower-volume items were expected to update more often. That makes guide prices more responsive, but does not turn them into live quotes or guarantee a fill. Understand buy limits and tax
Buy limits
Many items have a purchase limit over a four-hour period. The limit applies to buying, not selling, and some item variants share a connected limit. There is no single quantity that applies to every item, so check the specific item’s limit rather than assuming you can buy any amount in one period. [OSRS Wiki: Grand Exchange]
GE tax
GE tax applies to sales, and Jagex’s 30 September 2026 update confirms that the tax remains capped at 5 million coins per item. That announcement does not establish the current tax percentage, so do not infer a rate from older or conflicting references. [Jagex: GE Improvements: Beyond Max Cash]

Trading above the former max-cash limit
Since Jagex’s 30 September 2026 update, GE offers can exceed the former 2,147,483,647 GP limit by combining coins and platinum tokens. Jagex says the combined currency can support a value of about 2.149 trillion GP. Individual item stacks—including stacks of coins—remain capped at 2,147,483,647, so this changes how high-value offers can be handled rather than removing the per-stack cap. Existing rules such as buy limits still apply. [Jagex: GE Improvements: Beyond Max Cash]
Jagex notes that GE interactions can convert platinum tokens into GP and may cause bank coin placeholders. For a purchase, its stated workaround is to keep the exact coin amount needed in your inventory. This is a practical precaution for high-value transactions, not a way to bypass item-stack or buy-limit rules.

Common reasons an offer does not complete as expected
- The item is not tradeable: Check eligibility in the GE interface; some items cannot be bought or sold there.
- The offer price is not competitive: Guide price does not ensure a match. Check the price against available opposing offers and decide whether speed or price matters more to you.
- You reached the buy limit: Many items have a four-hour purchase limit, and variants may share it. Selling is not restricted by the same GE rate limits.
- Your account has restricted access: Free accounts are limited to free-to-play items, and Ironman access is restricted to bonds; available slots also differ by account status.
- A high-value transaction triggers currency handling: Platinum-token conversion or coin placeholders may occur. For a purchase, keep the exact coin amount needed in inventory, as Jagex advises.
Sources and scope
General workflow, location, account access, and buy-limit details are based on the OSRS Wiki’s Grand Exchange reference. Current high-value currency handling, the tax cap, and guide-price changes are based on Jagex’s 30 September 2026 announcement. Check the live game interface for account-specific access and item eligibility.
