In practice, the features you get depend on what hardware you have and what you’ve already paired through Samsung’s ecosystem.
What it can do
- Control SmartThings devices (lights, plugs, thermostats, some appliances and accessories) that you’ve already added to SmartThings.
- Use IR blaster control on models that support it (like some Galaxy S and Note variants, plus some Galaxy A models depending on region).
- Control certain Bluetooth devices when Samsung exposes them through the same UI layer.
- Quick actions that mirror what you see in SmartThings and the Galaxy quick panel area.
What it usually isn’t
- It’s not a universal “control anything” switch. Unsupported brands and protocols won’t magically appear.
- It’s not a full automation engine by itself. Automations typically come from SmartThings (routines), Home controls, or third-party platforms.
- It’s not always available in the exact same spot on every phone. Menu paths vary by One UI generation.
Prerequisites before you start
Before you spend time hunting menus, confirm the basics. Device control is only as good as the connectivity and device pairing behind it.
| Prerequisite | Why it matters | How to check fast |
|---|---|---|
| Updated system software | Samsung updates the UI and device support | Settings → Software update → Download and install |
| Samsung account signed in | Some controls require account sync | Settings → Accounts and backup → Manage accounts |
| SmartThings set up (for most devices) | SmartThings is the device backbone for many controls | Install/open SmartThings; ensure devices are added |
| Correct network setup | Local vs cloud control can change behavior | Use the same Wi‑Fi network for setup if prompted |
| Hardware support (if using IR) | Without an IR blaster, IR remote won’t work | Look for IR-related setup in SmartThings or device settings |
Find Device control on your Galaxy phone
The menu location depends on One UI and carrier customizations. Use these paths to locate the Device control page.
Method A: Use Settings search
- Open Settings.
- Tap the search bar and type Device control.
- Open the result that matches Device control (often under Connected devices or Home settings depending on your build).
Method B: Typical Settings paths (common variants)
- Open Settings.
- Try Connected devices → Device control.
- If you don’t see it, try Advanced features → Device control or Home / Home settings → Device control.
Method C: From the Quick settings area
On many Galaxy phones, Device control actions are surfaced via tiles. If you see a “Devices,” “SmartThings,” or similar tile, you can jump into the same control UI.
- Swipe down twice to open Quick settings.
- Look for a tile related to Devices or SmartThings.
- Tap it to open the device list/control panel.
Set up Device control
Setup is usually about connecting devices first, then letting Device control show them. Do the setup in SmartThings if your devices were not already paired.
Step 1: Confirm SmartThings is ready
- Open the SmartThings app.
- Sign in with your Samsung account.
- Tap Add device and complete the pairing flow for your device type.
If your device uses the SmartThings ecosystem, this is where the device becomes controllable from your phone.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Step 2: Open Device control
- Go to Settings → search Device control → open the page.
- Wait a moment for the device list to load.
If the page is empty, don’t assume the feature is broken—syncing can lag, or the devices weren’t added to SmartThings.
Step 3: Add devices directly from the Device control page (when available)
Some One UI builds show an Add or + option inside Device control.
- On the Device control page, tap Add (or + ).
- Choose the device type (for example, lights, plugs, or other categories).
- Follow the pairing steps and permission prompts.
Step 4: Pair hardware (IR blaster or Bluetooth) only if your phone supports it
- IR blaster: You’ll typically select your appliance brand/model or use a learning/setup flow in SmartThings.
- Bluetooth devices: Pair the device via Bluetooth settings first if the control page requests it.
Use Device control to manage your devices
Once your devices appear, control is usually straightforward: select a device, then use the action buttons on the screen.
Control via SmartThings device list
For most Wi‑Fi/Zigbee/hub-based devices, Device control reflects your SmartThings inventory.
- Open Device control.
- Tap the device you want (for example, a smart plug).
- Use the on-screen controls (commonly On/Off, mode selectors, sliders, or quick scene buttons).
- If you don’t see a control you expect, check whether the device exposes that capability in SmartThings.
Control with Samsung IR blaster hardware
If your Galaxy phone has an IR blaster, Device control can act like a remote for supported home electronics.

- Select the IR-enabled device profile (for example, TV/AC set up via SmartThings).
- Tap action buttons such as Power, Volume, or Mode (exact buttons depend on the device profile).
- Point the phone’s IR transmitter toward the appliance and tap the controls again if the first attempt fails.
Gotcha: IR typically requires a clear line of sight. Thick glass, metal surfaces, and distance can reduce success rate.

Control with Bluetooth devices
For Bluetooth-capable devices, the control page may show limited actions. Some devices still need direct settings or a dedicated app for advanced features.
- Open Device control.
- Choose the Bluetooth device entry.
- If the device is offline, open Bluetooth settings and confirm it’s connected.
Control with on-phone tiles and quick actions
Even if Device control itself is in Settings, Samsung often mirrors actions into quick panels for fast toggling.
- Swipe down to open Quick settings.
- Tap the devices tile (or related SmartThings tile) to open control.
- Use quick toggle actions for common “On/Off” devices, then go back to Device control for deeper controls.
Customize the Device control experience
Customization is where Device control becomes genuinely useful day to day—fewer taps, clearer device names, and fewer irrelevant entries.
Reorder and curate devices
Depending on your build, you may be able to reorder devices or remove favorites.
- Open Device control.
- Tap Edit (or long-press a device entry).
- Reorder devices or remove items you don’t use frequently.
- Save changes.
Update device names and rooms
Clear labeling reduces mistakes—especially when you have multiple lights or plugs.
- Open the SmartThings app.
- Go to the device page and open Edit.
- Update Name and Room (if available).
- Return to Device control and refresh (close/reopen) if the updates don’t show immediately.
Choose what shows up on your phone
Some builds let you control visibility so Device control doesn’t get cluttered.

Common problems and how to fix them
When Device control doesn’t behave, the fix is usually one of a few categories: account sync, device pairing status, permissions, network, or stale caches.
Problem: Device control page shows no devices
- Confirm SmartThings pairing: Open SmartThings and verify the device is listed and online.
- Refresh the UI: Close Device control and reopen; sometimes it takes a minute to sync.
- Check Wi‑Fi/Bluetooth connection: If the phone is offline or using a restricted network, cloud-backed controls can stall.
- Re-check the Samsung account: Make sure you’re signed into the same account that owns the devices in SmartThings.
Problem: Controls don’t respond or are delayed
- Test with SmartThings directly: If the device won’t respond in SmartThings either, the issue is upstream (device offline, hub offline, or connectivity).
- Power-cycle the device: For plugs/bulbs, turn off at the device power switch (if applicable) and re-energize.
- Move closer for IR: For IR devices, shorten distance and reduce obstacles.
- Rebuild IR profile if needed: If your AC/TV doesn’t react reliably, rerun the IR setup/learning step in SmartThings.
Problem: Wrong device appears or you control the wrong thing
- Rename devices: Use SmartThings to update device name and room so the Device control list matches your intent.
- Remove duplicates: If you paired the same physical device twice (common after a router change), delete the duplicate in SmartThings.
Problem: The device shows, but specific buttons are missing
- Capabilities vary: Not every device exposes every action (for example, some bulbs might only support On/Off, not brightness).
- Update device firmware: If your device supports it in SmartThings, apply firmware updates.
- Check for required hubs: Some devices require a specific hub, and without it, advanced controls won’t surface.
Problem: Device control won’t open or crashes
- Force close the feature from Settings → Apps → (search SmartThings and/or the app that hosts Device control) → Force stop.
- Restart the phone.
- Update the relevant app(s): SmartThings first, then any Samsung services apps if prompted.
- Clear cache (safer than clearing data): Storage → Clear cache for SmartThings.
Last resort: Clearing data resets settings in that app, so try cache and re-sync first.

Device control can affect real-world devices, so it’s worth confirming the permissions and account protections.
Verify sign-in and device permissions
- Confirm your Samsung account is secured with a strong password and enabled 2-step verification if available.
- Review SmartThings permissions in Android settings if a permission prompt appears or stops control from working.
Be careful with shared homes
If someone else has access to your SmartThings home, they may be able to control devices depending on the sharing settings. Check device sharing in SmartThings if you see unexpected actions.
Alternatives when Device control doesn’t match your needs
If your devices aren’t supported in Device control, you still have reliable paths forward.
Use SmartThings app directly
When Device control lacks a button or capability, SmartThings often has a more complete control surface for the same device.

Use manufacturer apps for IR or non-SmartThings devices
Some appliances and remotes only fully support control through their own apps or a specific hub.
- Install the device’s recommended app (from the device brand).
- Follow pairing instructions inside that app.
- Use Device control only if your model/hub explicitly exposes those devices to SmartThings.
Use automations instead of manual toggles
If your real goal is consistency (lights at sunset, AC pre-cooling, plug schedules), use routines and automations where supported.
- Open SmartThings.
- Create a routine for the actions you repeat.
- Use Device control as the manual override when you want immediate changes.
Bottom Line
To use the Device control page effectively, start by pairing devices through SmartThings (or IR/Bluetooth setup where supported), then manage visibility and naming so the controls you need are always one tap away.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf controls don’t respond, check device online status in SmartThings, confirm the Samsung account is correct, and test connectivity (IR line of sight for IR devices; Bluetooth/Wi‑Fi for others). With those fundamentals in place, Device control becomes a fast, reliable command center for your Galaxy phone.
FAQ: Do I need SmartThings for Device control?
For most SmartThings-supported devices, yes. If your Device control list is empty, the device usually isn’t added (or isn’t added under the same Samsung account) in SmartThings.
FAQ: Why do IR devices work only sometimes?
IR control is sensitive to distance and line of sight. Re-run IR setup in SmartThings for your appliance, and make sure the IR transmitter is pointing at the device.
FAQ: Can I control devices from different brands?
Only those that are supported through SmartThings, IR profiles, or Bluetooth exposure for your phone and model. For anything outside those ecosystems, you’ll likely need the manufacturer app or a supported hub.
