Pixel users may notice that Gboard has a new label for Google’s voice typing experience that previously showed up as Assistant voice typing. The change is mostly a naming/UI shift, but it can still trip people up because the toggle or entry point moves.
This guide treats the rebrand as a practical problem: find the feature, confirm it’s enabled, and make sure it works for your language, microphone permission, and Gboard version.

What Gboard rebranded on Pixel
Google’s keyboard (Gboard) has been consolidating voice input experiences under clearer in-app terminology. When you see Assistant voice typing replaced or renamed inside Gboard, it usually points to the same underlying voice input pipeline.
What Assistant voice typing was doing
Assistant voice typing let you speak and have your speech converted into text directly in the keyboard. It’s commonly used for faster replies, hands-free message drafting, and dictation in apps that accept text.

What the rebrand usually means in practice
In most rollouts, the feature isn’t “removed”—it’s renamed and sometimes relocated in settings. You’ll typically see one or more of these changes:
- The label changes from Assistant voice typing to a Gboard-branded voice typing term.
- The microphone/voice icon behavior may be slightly different (for example, where it appears on the keyboard).
- Some users may also see the feature only after updating Gboard or Google app components.
Who gets the change (Android versions and rollout)
These kinds of UI/feature-label updates roll out gradually by account and region. On Pixels, you’ll most often see it after updating Gboard (and sometimes the Google app) from the Play Store. Android version matters because microphone permission flows and keyboard UI can differ between Android 12, 13, and 14.
Where to find the new voice typing option in Gboard
The safest approach is to check both the system microphone permissions and the Gboard keyboard settings. The rebrand may move the toggle, but permissions still live in Android.

Check Gboard and Android prerequisites
Before changing anything, confirm you’re on a current Gboard build. On Pixel devices, voice typing behaviors can vary across versions.
- Gboard: update via Play Store.
- Android: ensure the OS is updated (security/behavior changes can affect permissions).
- Google app (optional but often helpful): some voice components are bundled with Google app services.
Android settings path (system)
Use this to confirm the mic is allowed for the apps involved.
- Open Settings on your Pixel.
- Tap Privacy (or Privacy & security on some builds).
- Tap Permission manager.
- Tap Microphone.
- Confirm both Gboard and any related voice app (often the Google app) are set to Allow.
Inside Gboard (keyboard UI)
If the label changed, you may now find the voice option in a different place within the keyboard settings.

- Go to Voice typing (or a similarly named voice input item).
- Enable the voice typing option shown in that menu.
How to enable voice typing after the rebrand
Once permissions and Gboard settings are correct, the feature should appear as a microphone/voice input control on the keyboard.

- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Languages & input (wording varies).
- Tap On-screen keyboard.
- Select Gboard.
- Tap Voice typing.
- Turn on the voice typing switch (if it’s off).
Enable microphone permissions (Android 12–14 and newer)
If you previously granted permission and then reset it, the mic may be blocked. Fix it here:
- Open Settings > Privacy > Permission manager.
- Tap Microphone.
- Find Gboard and set to Allow.
- Restart the keyboard by closing and reopening the app where you type.
Set language and voice model
Voice typing often depends on the language selected for dictation. If your speech is in a different language than your current typing language, results can degrade or the mic prompt can behave differently.
- In Gboard settings, open Languages.
- Confirm the language you want is enabled for the keyboard.
- Inside Voice typing, confirm the voice/dictation language matches.
How to use the feature day-to-day
After enabling it, dictation should feel consistent: tap the mic, speak, and correct the output.
Start voice typing from the keyboard
- Open a text field (compose a message, start an email, etc.).
- On the Gboard toolbar, tap the microphone icon.
- Speak clearly until you finish your sentence or message.
- Wait for the text to appear, then make edits as needed.
Use punctuation and formatting while speaking
Most Gboard voice typing supports spoken punctuation (for example, saying “comma” or “period” depending on language). If your locale doesn’t support it well, try switching to a supported language in Gboard and test again.

Troubleshooting when voice typing isn’t working
If the rebrand caused the feature to “disappear,” the fix is usually permissions, language settings, or an outdated Gboard build.
Quick checks
- Confirm you can use the mic in other apps (for example, a voice recorder).
- Verify you selected the correct keyboard language (Gboard vs. system keyboard language).
- Restart the app where you’re typing (and, if needed, reboot the Pixel).
Permission and mic issues
If you see a microphone icon but it won’t start, permission is the usual culprit.
- Go to Settings > Privacy > Permission manager > Microphone.
- Make sure Gboard is set to Allow.
- Return to the text app and try again.
Language and offline dictation mismatch
Some languages work better with online speech recognition. If you’re offline or your language is not fully supported for voice typing, you may see failures or garbled text.

- Test with mobile data or Wi‑Fi to compare behavior.
App-level fixes (cache, updates, reinstall)
If everything is enabled but dictation still fails:
- Update Gboard from the Play Store.
- Open Settings > Apps > Gboard.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Reopen your text app and test voice typing.
If it still fails, you can remove and reinstall updates for Gboard (wording depends on your Android build). Only do this if cache clearing doesn’t help, since it resets certain in-app state.
Assistant vs. Gboard behaviors that look similar
On some Pixels, users interpret “Assistant voice typing” as a Google Assistant prompt. But Gboard’s voice typing is a keyboard function. If you can activate voice typing in Gboard but Assistant voice features don’t show up, you may be mixing two different entry points.

Alternatives if the rebrand breaks your workflow
If you need voice typing immediately and the rebrand made your setup unstable, use a fallback until the rollout/setting mismatch resolves.
Use Google Keyboard features directly (if available)
Depending on device and region, you may see voice options in other keyboard/UI components. Check whether your Pixel has any built-in dictation option separate from Gboard’s label.
Try another keyboard (with privacy tradeoffs)
Third-party keyboards can provide reliable dictation, but permissions and data handling vary. If you do this, compare microphone permissions and keyboard data policies before committing.
Use Android dictation/system voice input as fallback
Some Android workflows still offer system-level dictation entry points even when a keyboard-specific feature label changes. Look for a microphone icon near the text cursor or in the text field toolbar of the app you’re using.
Common mistakes Pixel users make after the rename
- Assuming it’s removed: most rebrands are renames/relocations inside Gboard settings.
- Forgetting mic permission: Android permission resets happen after updates or security settings changes.
- Using the wrong language: dictation quality and availability can change when you change keyboard languages.
- Testing only in one app: some apps handle text fields differently. Test in Messages and Gmail to confirm.
- Skipping Gboard updates: the new label often appears after Play Store updates for Gboard.
FAQs about Gboard and Assistant voice typing
Did Google remove Assistant voice typing from my Pixel?
Usually no. A rebrand typically means the feature was renamed and/or moved inside Gboard, not deleted. Verify that Gboard voice typing is enabled and that the microphone permission for Gboard is set to Allow.

Why don’t I see the microphone icon in Gboard?
Common causes are mic permissions blocked for Gboard, a disabled voice typing toggle in Gboard settings, or a language/keyboard layout mismatch. Update Gboard and check Settings > Privacy > Permission manager > Microphone.

Does voice typing work offline after the rebrand?
It depends on the language pack and recognition mode available on your Pixel. If offline dictation isn’t supported for your language, you may see failures or poor results. Test with Wi‑Fi or mobile data.
Will spoken punctuation still work?
Often yes, but it depends on your dictation language and model. If punctuation commands stop working, try switching dictation language settings within Gboard and test again.
Is this feature the same as Google Assistant?
No. Gboard voice typing is designed for dictating into text fields. Google Assistant voice features are tied to Assistant interfaces and voice actions, even if both involve speech recognition.
Bottom Line
When Gboard rebrands Assistant voice typing on Pixel, the experience is usually intact—it’s just presented differently. Your best path is to update Gboard, confirm Gboard voice typing is enabled, and verify microphone permission for Gboard in Android settings.
If it still doesn’t work, troubleshoot in this order: permissions > language settings > Gboard cache/update > test in two apps (Messages and Gmail). That workflow resolves the vast majority of “it disappeared” reports after a rebrand.
