What you need
- Node.js and Playwright installed in your project.
- A BrowserCat API key.
- A page URL that the remote browser can access.

The connection method and endpoint follow BrowserCat’s documented remote Playwright pattern; the screenshot method is Playwright’s. The full-page option asks Playwright to capture the document beyond the currently visible viewport.
Choose a readiness condition for the site
waitUntil: 'load' waits for the page load event, but it cannot guarantee that every image, font, or client-rendered section is ready. For a page that fills in content later, wait for a page-specific selector or application signal before capturing:

Avoid treating a fixed delay or a generic network-idle state as a universal guarantee: sites may load assets after those conditions or keep network connections open.

Return an image buffer instead of writing a file
If another part of your program will store or process the image, omit the path. Playwright returns the screenshot as a buffer:

Full-page images versus visual regression tests
A screenshot call creates an image. It does not, by itself, compare that image with a saved baseline or fail a test when pixels differ. A visual regression assertion is the separate comparison step.
Whole-page snapshots can be brittle for regression checks: a change in any part of the captured page can affect the comparison, including content unrelated to the component under test. When validating one component, an element screenshot can keep unrelated page content out of the image, though targeting and capturing the element takes additional setup. BrowserCat’s visual-testing guide illustrates page and element snapshot contexts.
Browser support to account for
As of BrowserCat’s browser documentation reviewed on October 3, 2026, BrowserCat sessions use Chromium-based browsers. The documentation lists Firefox and WebKit as coming soon, so do not assume those engines are available for this workflow. Check the browser documentation for changes before relying on a specific engine.

WebSocket connection or authentication fails
Check that the endpoint is exactly wss://api.browsercat.com/connect, the API key is valid, and the header name is Api-Key. Confirm the environment variable is set in the same shell or process that runs Node.js. Do not print or commit the key.
The screenshot is blank or missing content
Navigation completing does not mean a client-rendered page has finished displaying its important content. Wait for a meaningful selector or application-ready signal, then verify that the selector is visible before capturing. Also confirm the requested URL loads in the remote browser.
The image stops at the viewport
Make sure the call includes fullPage: true. Without it, a normal screenshot covers the viewport rather than the full document.
The output file is missing or has the wrong format
Check the script’s working directory and the exact path. Use an extension and type that agree—for example, page.jpg with type: 'jpeg'. If downstream code needs image bytes rather than a saved file, capture the returned buffer.

A visual test changes unexpectedly
Inspect the entire captured image for changing content outside the component being tested. If the test is meant to cover one component, consider an element screenshot instead of a full-page snapshot.
