How to use Stardew Valley multiplayer on Android and iOS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stardew Valley multiplayer on mobile lets you co-op with a friend using the same farm—typically over the local network (same Wi‑Fi) by hosting and joining the session. If you’re switching between Android and iOS, the process is mostly about getting the same version, allowing local discovery/connection, and using the right IP address when needed.

This guide walks you through hosting on both Android and iPhone/iPad, joining from the other device, and troubleshooting the most common failure points. You’ll also find practical notes on save behavior and what to do when the host doesn’t show up.

What Android and iOS multiplayer in Stardew Valley really means

Mobile multiplayer in Stardew Valley is designed around connecting players into a shared co-op session, with one device acting as the host. In most setups, you’ll use the same Wi‑Fi network (LAN) so devices can discover each other or connect directly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stardew Valley mobile does not function like a hosted online server MMO. Outside of LAN-style connectivity, you’re usually dealing with network address translation (NAT) limitations, so you may need a workaround (like a VPN) depending on your setup.

Prerequisites before you start

  • Same Stardew Valley version on both devices. Multiplayer can fail or sessions won’t appear if one side is on a newer/older build.
  • Both devices on the same Wi‑Fi for easiest LAN play (or at least compatible network routes if you’re using a hotspot).
  • Working internet is not strictly required for the connection itself on LAN, but you’ll need it to download updates and verify game versions.
  • Permissions: iOS may prompt for Local Network access; Android may prompt for local/nearby device discovery depending on OS version.
  • Host device stays awake. If the host sleeps or the game closes, the session can drop.

Multiplayer options on mobile (LAN vs direct connect)

On Android and iOS, you’ll generally see two ways to get connected:

  • Local Network (LAN) listing: the join screen shows nearby sessions if discovery works.
  • Direct Connect: you manually enter the host’s IP address if discovery doesn’t work or you’re troubleshooting.

In practice, LAN listing is the fastest. Direct Connect is the most reliable when you hit discovery issues.

How to host a Stardew Valley multiplayer farm on Android

Hosting creates the co-op session that the other device will join. The host can be any player—one device is simply responsible for keeping the session alive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Stardew Valley on your Android device.
  2. From the main menu, choose Multiplayer.
  3. Select Host.
  4. Choose either Create a New Farm or select an existing farm (if your version supports joining that save).
  5. Confirm your farm settings, then start the farm session.
  6. On the multiplayer screen during the session, note the IP address or connection details shown for direct joining (if present).

Keep the game open and avoid switching networks mid-session.

How to host a Stardew Valley multiplayer farm on iOS

On iPhone and iPad, hosting is similar: you start the multiplayer session as the host, then let the other player connect.

  1. Open Stardew Valley on iPhone or iPad.
  2. Go to the main menu and tap Multiplayer.
  3. Tap Host.
  4. Create a new farm or load an existing farm (choose what you want to play co-op).
  5. Start the session.
  6. When the session is running, watch for a connection/IP option for Direct Connect and share it with your co-op partner.

When iOS prompts for network discovery/connection, accept it—without Local Network permission, iOS may not detect or connect to nearby sessions.

How to join the farm from the other phone

Your join device (the non-host) uses the Multiplayer menu to find or connect to the host session.

Join over the local network (LAN)

  1. On the joining device, open Stardew Valley.
  2. Tap/click Multiplayer.
  3. Select Join.
  4. Wait for the host farm/session to appear in the Local Network list.
  5. Tap/click the correct session name.
  6. Confirm the connection if the game asks for a username or farm entry.

If the host doesn’t appear, don’t keep retrying indefinitely—switch to Direct Connect.

Join using Direct Connect (IP address)

  1. On the joining device, open Stardew Valley → Multiplayer → Join.
  2. Choose Direct Connect (sometimes labeled similarly) or look for an option to Enter IP.
  3. Get the host’s local IP address (from the host’s multiplayer screen, or by checking device network details).
  4. Enter the IP address in the field and submit.
  5. Wait for the session to connect; once it does, load into the shared farm.

Use the host’s current IP address for the Wi‑Fi you’re on. IPs can change when a device reconnects to the router.

Cross-platform play checklist (Android ↔ iOS)

If you’re pairing an Android phone with an iPhone/iPad, cross-platform issues usually come down to networking and version parity.

  • Update both games to the same Stardew Valley version.
  • Use the same Wi‑Fi network (no guest Wi‑Fi, no client isolation).
  • Allow iOS Local Network permission if prompted.
  • Verify the host IP on the same network—don’t copy an IP from a different Wi‑Fi.
  • Don’t use multiple routers between devices (for example, one device on a “smart mesh” node and the other on a separate network segment can behave differently).

If you can’t see the host: troubleshooting flow

When the join device can’t find the host, you want a fast, deterministic approach. Start with the simplest causes (version, permissions, network), then move to direct IP.

Version mismatch

If one device updated Stardew Valley and the other didn’t, the host may not appear or direct connect may fail.

  1. On both devices, confirm the game is fully updated in the App Store / Google Play Store.
  2. Force-close the app and reopen it after updating.
  3. Try hosting again from the updated device.

Wi‑Fi isolation or guest networks

Many guest Wi‑Fi setups block device-to-device traffic, so LAN discovery and direct connection both fail.

  1. Switch both phones to the main Wi‑Fi network (not guest mode).
  2. Check your router for settings like AP isolation / client isolation and disable them temporarily.
  3. Retry the session after both devices reconnect to Wi‑Fi.

Local Network permission on iOS

iOS can block local discovery or connection if Local Network permission wasn’t granted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Incorrect IP address

The most common Direct Connect failure is using an IP that changed or belongs to the wrong interface.

  1. Make sure both devices are connected to the same Wi‑Fi SSID.
  2. On the host, re-check the host IP displayed in the multiplayer screen (if available) or fetch it from network settings.
  3. Enter the fresh IP on the joining device and try again.

Also watch out for copying the router’s IP (common default like 192.168.0.1) instead of the phone’s IP.

Different subnets / mobile hotspot issues

Mobile hotspots and some router configurations can place devices on different subnets, breaking LAN discovery.

  1. If using a hotspot, ensure the joining phone is connected to the same hotspot and not switching automatically to cellular data.
  2. Disable “Wi‑Fi Assist” (iOS) or similar features temporarily so the join device doesn’t move off Wi‑Fi mid-connection.
  3. Prefer Direct Connect and use the host’s current hotspot IP.

Playing over the internet: what works and what doesn’t

Stardew Valley’s mobile multiplayer is typically easiest on LAN. If you’re trying to play remotely over the public internet, you’ll run into NAT/firewall rules that prevent the joining device from reaching the host directly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What often works:

  • VPN-based LAN emulation: both players connect to a VPN that provides shared routing (the game thinks it’s local).
  • Matched networks: specialized setups where both devices can reach each other on the same private IP range.

What usually doesn’t work reliably:

  • Direct Connect over public IP without port forwarding. Mobile networks and consumer routers often block inbound traffic.
  • Router port forwarding from the host side, since mobile-hosted sessions may not be designed for it and phone networks frequently change addresses.

If you want, tell me your exact scenario (same Wi‑Fi, different cities, hotspot, and your router/VPN type) and I can suggest the most realistic path.

  • Save responsibility: your co-op progress is stored in the host’s farm files. The joining device generally doesn’t “own” the farm save in a way that replaces the host.
  • Progression is shared: buildings, crops, and upgrades progress across the co-op session.
  • Items and inventory: you can trade and coordinate, but remember both players can affect shared systems during active play.
  • Session stability: if the host pauses, leaves the app, or loses Wi‑Fi, the co-op session can end.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Trying to connect while one device is on cellular (or switching mid-session). Keep both on the same Wi‑Fi.
  • Guest Wi‑Fi without device-to-device support. Use the main network.
  • Assuming IPs stay the same. Re-check IPs any time you reconnect to Wi‑Fi or toggle airplane mode.
  • Using “router IP” instead of phone IP in Direct Connect.
  • Ignoring iOS Local Network permission, then expecting LAN discovery to work.

Alternatives if you can’t get multiplayer working

If mobile multiplayer keeps failing despite correct networking, try these fallback paths:

  1. Try the other join method: if LAN listing fails, use Direct Connect (IP). If Direct Connect fails, try LAN listing after reloading the host.
  2. Restart both apps and reboot the router if needed. Rebooting the host first often clears stale session state.
  3. Use a different network (for example, a different home Wi‑Fi or a clean LAN created by a different router).
  4. Play from one device at a time to verify the game itself works correctly on that save before reattempting co-op.

FAQs

Do Android and iOS players need the same version to join?

Yes. If versions don’t match, discovery and Direct Connect are more likely to fail. Update both devices before starting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can we play over cellular data instead of Wi‑Fi?

Usually no, at least not directly. Stardew Valley mobile multiplayer is most reliable on the local network. For remote play, you often need a VPN or a network setup that routes both devices like they’re on the same LAN.

Why does the host show up on one phone but not the other?

Most causes are network-related: iOS Local Network permission, guest Wi‑Fi isolation, or a firewall/feature that blocks peer-to-peer discovery on one device.

What happens if the host closes the app?

The co-op session ends. To continue, the host must reopen the multiplayer session and the other players must rejoin.

Can we join different farms in the same co-op session?

Typically no—multiplayer is tied to the hosted farm/session. Start the host session with the farm you both want to play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom Line

For Android and iOS co-op, the winning approach is simple: match Stardew Valley versions, use the same Wi‑Fi, and connect via LAN listing when possible. If discovery fails, Direct Connect with the host’s current local IP almost always gets you moving.

If you still hit issues, focus on iOS Local Network permission, Wi‑Fi isolation/guest networks, and verifying the correct phone IP. Those three checks resolve the majority of multiplayer connection problems.
