Google and Apple partner on better Android-iPhone switching

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Switching from Android to iPhone is no longer the multi-day project it used to be. Apple and Google have been pushing the ecosystem toward smoother migration—meaning fewer “half-moved” items and less guesswork during setup.

This guide gives you a complete, step-by-step path for Android to iPhone switching, with the exact workflow to use, what transfers reliably, what to do manually, and how to recover when the transfer doesn’t behave.

What the Apple–Google partnership means for Android to iPhone switching

Apple and Google’s coordination is aimed at improving the handoff experience: the setup flow is designed to recognize common Google account data, reduce friction when moving contacts and media, and guide you through the steps so fewer items are missed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practically, that shows up in the way Apple’s Android-to-iPhone migration process works (notably the Move to iOS workflow). You’ll typically sign in to Google services during or right after setup so cloud-backed items land correctly on iPhone.

Amazon Basics USB-A to USB-C Fast Charger Cable, USB 2.0, 480Mbps Data Transfer Speed, USB-IF Certified, for Apple iPhone 16/15, iPad, Samsung Galaxy, Tablets, Car, 3ft, Black
  • USB-IF Certified, connects any USB-C to any standard USB-A enabled devices. For power transfer/charging smartphones, power banks, wall/car chargers, and low-power devices. Suitable for data transfer between smartphones, tablets, laptops, hard drives and more
  • In the box: 1 cable, 3 foot 15W USB-A to USB-C cable (USB 2.0) for charging and powering devices, transferring data, photos, and music
  • Fast Charge and Data Transfer: Supports fast charging up to 15W (5V/3A) and data transfer speeds up to 480 Mbps. Do not exceed recommended load (15W, 5V/3A). Limited charging speed for PD enabled devices
  • Backed by an Amazon Basics 1-Year Limited Warranty

Key takeaway: treat migration as two tracks—a guided transfer for device data, plus account sign-in for cloud-backed data. Doing both is what produces the “complete” switch people expect.

Before you switch: prerequisites and what you need to decide

Spend 10–20 minutes here and you’ll avoid most post-migration headaches.

Check your devices

  • iPhone: Use iPhone running iOS 17 or later when possible. (Older iOS versions may still support migration, but feature coverage can vary.)
  • Android: Use the official Move to iOS app from Google Play. Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth permissions must be allowed during setup.
  • Power: Plug both phones into power. Transfers can run long enough for low battery to break the session.

Decide what to keep and what to recreate

You’re moving data, not rebuilding an entire digital identity from scratch. Still, some apps and authorizations may require re-setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Expect to re-authorize apps that use OAuth tokens (banking apps, streaming apps, some enterprise apps).
  • Be prepared to reconfigure two-factor authentication (2FA) for email and key services.

Prepare your accounts

  • Know your Google account email and password.
  • Have access to your recovery method (often SMS or authenticator) for your Google account and important email.
  • If you use an authenticator app (like Google Authenticator), plan how you’ll migrate it (more on that below).

Best method: use Move to iOS for a guided transfer

For most people, Apple’s Android-to-iPhone workflow is the fastest and most reliable way to get “core” data onto the iPhone. It’s designed to transfer supported content via a direct, secure connection between the phones.

When the partnership is working in your favor, it’s because Google-backed items can be re-linked quickly during setup, so you don’t end up with contacts or media that “only partly moved.”

What transfers (and what usually doesn’t)

Support varies by Android version, app data types, and iOS version. Use this as a practical expectation model.

Data type Typical transfer result What to do if it’s missing
Contacts Usually transfers successfully Sign in to your Google account on iPhone and ensure Contacts sync is enabled
Calendars Often transfers or re-synces via account Enable Calendar sync for your Google account in Settings
Photos & videos Commonly transferred, but may be incomplete depending on size/network Confirm Google Photos/other backups, then resync or re-upload
Messages (SMS/MMS) Limited; some setups move message history, often not everything Expect to start fresh for iMessage; review messaging app-specific options
App list May not move as a complete “clone” of paid apps Reinstall apps from the App Store and sign in
Authenticator/2FA tokens Usually not fully transferable automatically Migrate authenticator using provider tools or backup codes
Banking/payment app auth Typically requires re-verification Plan verification steps before you switch

Step-by-step: switch from Android to iPhone

The goal is simple: set up your iPhone in a fresh state, connect your Android through the migration workflow, then sign in to your accounts so cloud-backed data finishes syncing.

1) Prepare your Android and iPhone

  1. Charge both phones to at least 50% (plug them in if possible).
  2. On Android, install the Move to iOS app from Google Play.
  3. On Android, keep Wi‑Fi on and ensure Bluetooth is enabled (the setup process may use both).
  4. On iPhone, make sure you’re doing setup fresh (if your iPhone is new, you’re good; if it’s used, you may need to erase it in Settings before starting migration).

2) Start iPhone setup with Move from Android

  1. On the iPhone, power on and follow setup prompts until you reach the migration choice.
  2. Select Move Data from Android (wording can vary slightly by iOS version).
  3. Follow the onscreen steps until you reach the screen showing connection instructions (often including an on-screen code/connection prompt).

3) Transfer your data over the secure connection

  1. Open Move to iOS on your Android.
  2. Agree to permissions when prompted.
  3. When asked, connect the Android to the iPhone’s temporary Wi‑Fi network and enter the code shown on the iPhone.
  4. Select the content categories you want to transfer (commonly contacts, messages, photos/videos, and more depending on device support).
  5. Wait for completion without using or sleeping the devices. Transfers can take 30 minutes or several hours for large libraries.

4) Finish setup and sign in to accounts

  1. On iPhone, complete the remaining setup prompts (Face ID/Touch ID, Apple ID, location settings).
  2. When you get to account prompts, sign in to the same Google account(s) you used on Android if the option appears.
  3. Confirm your sync settings after setup (Contacts, Calendars, Photos options depend on the service you use).

Transferring specific data types correctly

“Transferred” doesn’t always mean “working the same way.” These checks help you confirm real-world functionality.

Contacts, calendars, and email

  • Contacts: Open the Contacts app and search for a contact you know exists on Android. If missing, enable Google Contacts sync in Settings.
  • Calendars: Verify events around today’s date. Some calendar subscriptions behave differently than events stored directly in your Google Calendar.
  • Email: If you use Gmail, it’s typically best to add your Google account in Settings so mail, contacts, and calendars stay consistent.

Photos and videos

Photos are where migration gets tricky because people use different storage approaches: local gallery, Google Photos, or both.

  • If you used Google Photos, confirm whether it was set to “Backup & sync” on Android.
  • If you relied on local storage only, the migration may move your camera roll, but long videos and large libraries can slow or partially complete—plan extra time.

Messages and chat apps

SMS/MMS migration is limited. Most people should expect SMS history to be incomplete, especially with heavy media conversations.

  • For chat apps (WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal), use the app’s own transfer mechanism when available.
  • After switching, ensure you can receive verification codes for those apps on your new phone number or account.

Authenticator apps and SMS-based 2FA

This is the most common “it worked, but I can’t log in anywhere” problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If you use a provider that supports migration (some authenticator apps do), follow its in-app transfer instructions before you wipe Android.
  • For services that use SMS 2FA, make sure your phone number works on iPhone before you attempt logins.
  • Keep backup codes for critical services (email, Apple ID, banking) in a safe place.

Music, ebooks, and downloads

Media is often “re-download” territory, not “copy everything” territory.

  • Spotify/YouTube Music/etc.: sign in and confirm offline downloads settings.
  • Kindle/ebooks: sign in to the same account and re-sync your library.
  • Local downloads: anything stored only on the Android device may not carry over unless it’s part of the migration categories.

Passwords, Wi‑Fi, and payment apps

  • Passwords: If you use Google Password Manager, confirm it’s enabled on iPhone via your Google account and browser settings.
  • Wi‑Fi: iPhone may not import every Wi‑Fi profile from Android. You can re-add networks manually.
  • Payments: Apple Pay and bank apps generally require re-verification. Don’t assume the old authorization persists.

If the guided transfer fails: troubleshooting checklist

When migration breaks, it’s usually connection stability, permissions, or a data category that’s too large for the session.

Common symptoms and fixes

Transfer stops at a specific percentage

  • Keep both phones powered and awake; transfers often fail when the screen sleeps.
  • Re-run the transfer with fewer categories (for example, move contacts first, then photos/videos separately).
  • Disconnect and retry after restarting both devices.

iPhone can’t find your Android

  • Double-check Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi are enabled on Android.
  • Allow Move to iOS permissions (especially local network/Bluetooth where prompted).
  • Forget and reconnect to the temporary Wi‑Fi network as instructed, then re-enter the code.

Some items missing after transfer

  • Contacts: verify Google Contacts sync is on in iPhone Settings for your Google account.
  • Photos: confirm backup/sync settings and compare counts between Android and Google Photos.
  • Messages/chat apps: use the app’s own transfer options rather than relying on SMS migration.

Apps don’t appear on the iPhone

  • Only supported content categories are migrated; apps are typically re-installed from the App Store.
  • Use the App Store search and sign into each service account (some app content won’t copy without a server-side account sign-in).

Alternative approaches when you can’t use Move to iOS

Sometimes Move to iOS is blocked by device restrictions, storage size, or odd carrier setups. These alternatives cover the same ground—just with different tradeoffs.

Manual transfer via Google accounts and cloud sync

If your Android data is primarily stored in Google services, manual sign-in on iPhone can be enough.

  1. Add your Google account on iPhone (Settings > Mail > Accounts > Add Account).
  2. Enable Contacts, Calendars, and (if applicable) Gmail sync.
  3. Use Google Photos sync to repopulate your photo library.

Transfer via iCloud + Google Takeout (selective migration)

For people who want more control, export data first, then import it to iPhone-related services.

  1. Use Google Takeout to export specific data types (Contacts, Photos, Calendars) as files.
  2. Import files to iPhone where the format supports it (Contacts via vCard files; photos into Photos app via supported formats).
  3. Recreate app logins after import.

Use backup/restore where supported

Backup/restore is helpful when you’re moving between supported states, but it’s not always equivalent to a “complete” app migration.

  1. Use iPhone backup features only for iPhone-to-iPhone scenarios.
  2. For Android-to-iPhone, focus on guided transfer + account re-linking for reliability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Common mistakes that cost hours (and how to avoid them)

  • Wiping Android too early: Don’t erase the device until you’ve confirmed critical items (contacts, 2FA access, photos) on iPhone.
  • Skipping authenticator planning: If you can’t log in to your accounts, the migration is still a win—but it’s not usable.
  • Ignoring phone number activation: If your iPhone doesn’t receive SMS, you may lock yourself out of verification flows.
  • Transferring everything in one run: For huge photo libraries, do contacts first, then photos/videos in a second pass if needed.

Android and iPhone settings to review after switching

Migration finishes the copy step, but you still need to make sure the phone behaves like yours.

Privacy, permissions, and notifications

  • Review Settings > Privacy & Security (location, photos access, contacts access).
  • Check notification permissions for core apps (email, messaging, banking).

iMessage/FaceTime and messaging settings

  • Sign into your Apple ID and verify phone number/email for iMessage and FaceTime.
  • Decide whether you want SMS forwarding or alternate messaging behavior based on your carrier plan.

Security and device management

  • Update your Apple ID security settings and recovery options.
  • Remove or review old device sessions in your Google account and important services.

FAQs about switching Android to iPhone with Google and Apple

Does Move to iOS transfer everything automatically?

No. It reliably moves supported categories like contacts and some media, but app-specific data and 2FA/secure tokens often require manual setup after sign-in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will my Google account contacts show up even if the transfer misses them?

Usually, yes. If you sign into your Google account on iPhone and enable Contacts sync, your contact list should populate from the cloud.

What happens to WhatsApp or other chat history?

Chat apps typically require the app’s own transfer process. Rely on the app’s instructions rather than SMS migration expectations.

Can I switch if I don’t have internet during the transfer?

Migration uses a direct phone-to-phone connection for the handoff, but you’ll need internet afterward for account sign-in, iCloud/Google services syncing, and app downloads.

Should I keep both phones for a while after switching?

Yes. Keep Android active at least until you’ve confirmed 2FA verification works on iPhone and your critical apps can log in successfully.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom Line

The Apple–Google push is best experienced as a two-phase migration: use Move to iOS for supported device data, then sign in to your Google services so cloud-backed items sync cleanly on iPhone.

If you handle the big pitfalls—2FA access, phone number activation, and photos library size—you can usually get to a fully usable iPhone without repeating the same “login verification” loop across multiple services.
