You can use Star Wars roleplaying books for D&D campaign ideas, settings, characters, and adventures, but their rules and custom dice do not automatically work with D&D. Choose one D&D edition as the rules engine, keep its resolution and progression systems, and convert only the Star Wars elements your campaign needs. First, identify which Star Wars RPG edition your book belongs to.
What “Star Wars roleplaying game books” means
Star Wars has had several roleplaying systems, and their books are not interchangeable. Current Edge Studio listings include lines first published by Fantasy Flight Games, such as Edge of the Empire and Force and Destiny. Each has its own skills, combat rules, character options, equipment, and guidance for the game master. Edge Studio describes Edge of the Empire as a 448-page hardcover core rulebook with rules, gear, adversaries, and an introductory adventure; Force and Destiny is also a 448-page hardcover core book, with rules for checks, combat, and the Force (Edge of the Empire; Force and Destiny).

Earlier Star Wars RPGs used different systems, including West End Games’ d6 game, Wizards of the Coast’s d20 game, and Saga Edition. Designer Sterling Hershey described the Wizards d20 game as more detailed and substantially based on D&D, while characterizing Fantasy Flight’s later approach as a return to theatre of the mind (StarWars.com interview with Sterling Hershey). That history can help explain why some older material may feel familiar, but it does not make every Star Wars book compatible with current D&D. Check the book’s edition and rules system before adapting it.

- Usually easy to borrow: locations, factions, character concepts, adventure premises, era details, and descriptions of the galaxy.
- Needs a D&D ruling: character abilities, obstacles with mechanical outcomes, blasters, armor, vehicles, and Force-like powers.
- Keep in D&D: checks, combat resolution, action economy, and character progression. Do not assume Star Wars statistics, advancement, or dice map directly to them.
For example, a Star Wars book can supply a tense checkpoint scene and the faction running it. The DM can then decide whether the characters persuade a guard, sneak past, or create a distraction using the chosen D&D edition’s rules. The setting material provides the situation; D&D determines how the uncertain action is resolved.

A practical method for using Star Wars books in a D&D campaign

Choose the D&D edition first
Decide which D&D rules your group is using before adapting anything. Rules differ between editions. In the cited 2014 fifth-edition Basic Rules, an ability check uses a d20 plus the relevant ability modifier, adds proficiency when applicable, and compares the result with a difficulty class (D&D Beyond’s 2014 fifth-edition ability check rules). Use the rules for your chosen edition rather than assuming this description covers every version.

Borrow the fiction before the mechanics
Start with the parts that need no conversion: a planet’s environment, a faction’s goals, an NPC’s attitude, or the premise of an adventure. Keep D&D’s existing rules for deciding what happens when a character takes a risky or uncertain action.

Map characters and obstacles selectively
Find a reasonable D&D equivalent for a character concept in an existing class, background, species option, or subclass. For an obstacle, choose an appropriate D&D ability check or use a skill challenge if your table supports that approach. Do not translate every Star Wars statistic just because it appears on the page.

Make equipment and vehicles campaign decisions
Treat blasters, armor, and vehicles as bespoke choices for the campaign. Their Star Wars RPG statistics are not D&D statistics, so decide how each item works in D&D—or describe it narratively without adding a new mechanical benefit. Consider how a conversion affects the game before making it available to player characters.

Set consistent boundaries for Force-like powers
Choose whether the Force is represented by existing D&D spells, class features, feats, or a restricted homebrew option. Specify who can use the abilities, what they cost, and what limits apply. The cited sources establish no official D&D conversion or balance table, so these choices are the DM’s homebrew rulings, not published compatibility rules.

Use one system to resolve each action
Star Wars Roleplaying Dice use custom dice to generate narrative outcomes; D&D’s cited fifth-edition rules use d20 tests, modifiers, and target numbers. StarWars.com’s July 2014 preview lists 14 custom dice in the Star Wars Roleplaying Dice pack, but those dice do not replace D&D’s resolution rules (StarWars.com, July 9, 2014). Choose one system for an action rather than rolling both by default. You can interpret a Star Wars narrative result as a D&D consequence, but resolve the action only once.

Which Star Wars book should you use?
If you want to play the Star Wars RPG as written
Start with the core rulebook for the campaign line you want. Edge Studio presents Edge of the Empire as the heart of that campaign, and Force and Destiny as the fundamental book for its campaign. Their rules, equipment, and character options are intended for their own Star Wars RPG systems, not as D&D add-ons (Edge of the Empire; Force and Destiny).

If you want D&D with Star Wars atmosphere
Use Star Wars books as source material, then handle anything mechanical with D&D. For a Clone Wars-era campaign, Rise of the Separatists offers era details, player options, gear, vehicles, character profiles, and GM guidance. Edge Studio describes it as a 144-page hardcover compatible with Star Wars RPG lines; that compatibility applies within those lines and does not establish D&D compatibility (Rise of the Separatists).

If you have older Star Wars d20 material
The Wizards of the Coast d20 game’s historical relationship with D&D may make its rules concepts more familiar, but still verify the book’s edition and compare each rule with the D&D edition you plan to run. Hershey’s comments describe that earlier game; they are not a publisher statement that its books work with current D&D (StarWars.com interview with Sterling Hershey).
Keep reprint compatibility in perspective
Edge Studio’s June 2022 announcement said its listed Star Wars RPG reprints had “no appreciable differences” from the prior Fantasy Flight Games versions and remained compatible with everything FFG released (Edge Studio’s “A New Hope” announcement). This is a statement about compatibility within those Star Wars RPG lines, not with D&D.
