If Alexa is not responding on your Fire tablet, first check that you’re using the main profile and that Alexa Hands-Free is enabled. Then test with the screen awake, check the tablet’s internet connection, and restart it. The right steps can vary by model, so identify your Fire tablet before troubleshooting.
1. Check your Fire tablet model and profile
Alexa features differ across Fire tablet models and generations. To find yours, open Settings > Device Options > Device Model or look under About Fire Tablet. You can also find the model in Amazon’s Manage Your Devices.

Swipe down from the top of the home screen and look for the Alexa Hands-Free icon in Quick Actions. Select it to enable hands-free if it is off; Amazon says Quick Actions displays an indicator when the feature is disabled. You can also check Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode.

With hands-free off, Alexa may still work outside Show Mode if you press and hold the Home button. If that works but the wake word does not, Alexa is available through the button, but the hands-free setting, wake-word detection conditions, or model support may be the issue. 3. Test the wake word with the screen on
Say the wake word with the screen awake. Some Fire tablet models may not detect it while the screen is off and the tablet is unplugged, so also test while the tablet is connected to power if that applies to your device. Amazon says Fire tablet Alexa uses on-device keyword spotting; see its Alexa FAQs.

Watch the bottom of the screen after speaking: a blue line indicates that a request is streaming. Amazon says the stream closes after the request is processed. If you see no line, Alexa may not have detected the wake word; if you do see one but get no expected response, move on to the network checks.
4. Check the Wi-Fi connection
- Make sure Airplane mode is off and the tablet is connected to the Wi-Fi network you intend to use.
- Check whether other devices can access the internet on that network.
- Move the tablet closer to the router and reduce possible sources of interference.
- Restart the tablet and router, wait two minutes, then try Alexa again.
For a useful isolation test, connect the tablet to a smartphone hotspot. If Alexa works on the hotspot, the problem is likely with the original network. If multiple devices can’t connect to that network, Amazon recommends contacting your internet service provider. Its Fire tablet Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance also includes checking for software updates.

5. Restart the tablet and check for updates
To restart, hold the power button for up to three seconds until the shutdown prompt appears, then select OK. After the tablet shuts down, hold the power button for two to three seconds to turn it on again. Amazon describes rebooting as a way to address intermittent issues; see its Fire tablet troubleshooting steps.
Check for the latest Fire tablet software available for your specific model as another maintenance step. An update is not a guaranteed Alexa fix, but keeping the device current is part of Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting sequence.

Alexa Hands-Free and Show Mode are different features
Show Mode is separate from Alexa Hands-Free, so a tablet’s compatibility with one does not establish compatibility with the other. Amazon lists Show Mode support for select older Fire HD 8 and HD 10 models. It says Show Mode is incompatible with Fire 7 (7th, 9th, and 12th generations), Fire HD 8 (12th generation), Fire Max 11 (13th generation), and Fire HD 10 (13th generation). Check Amazon’s Show Mode compatibility information for details.
When to contact Amazon
If Alexa still won’t respond after checking the profile and hands-free setting, testing with the screen on and tablet connected to power, verifying Wi-Fi, and restarting and updating, contact Amazon support for model-specific next steps. Amazon’s public guidance does not establish a hardware microphone test or repair procedure for this problem, so avoid assuming that a microphone repair or factory reset is the next step.
