You can personalize an iPhone without installing anything: add glanceable widgets to one or more Lock Screens, then use StandBy to turn a charging iPhone on its side into a bedside clock, photo frame, widget dashboard, or Live Activities display. Lock Screen widgets require iOS 16 or later. StandBy requires the feature to be enabled, a connected charger, sideways orientation, and a stationary phone; Apple does not list MagSafe as a requirement.
Start by creating a Lock Screen for the information you check most, then build a separate StandBy view for charging. The controls below use Apple’s current iPhone labels and distinguish what works on every compatible phone from features that depend on the model or iOS version.

What you can personalize
Apple treats the Lock Screen and StandBy as related but different surfaces. A Lock Screen appears when the iPhone is locked and can combine wallpaper, a clock style, controls, and a row of widgets. StandBy appears while the iPhone is charging, lying on its side, and staying still.
- Lock Screen widgets: glanceable information such as temperature, air quality, battery level, headlines, reminders, weather, or upcoming calendar events.
- StandBy: large widget, photo, or clock views designed to be readable from a distance, plus full-screen Live Activities.
- Multiple Lock Screens: make separate screens for work, personal use, travel, exercise, or bedtime.
- Focus links: associate a Lock Screen with a Focus so selecting that screen also activates its Focus settings.
- Wallpaper and clock styling: use personal photos, Photo Shuffle, Apple’s built-in categories, and different clock appearances.
Widgets are intentionally compact. They are best for information or quick actions you can understand at a glance, not for replacing a full app.

Requirements and compatibility
| Feature | What you need | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Lock Screen widgets | iOS 16 or later | Available widget types and editing controls vary by app and widget. |
| StandBy | StandBy enabled; iPhone connected to a charger; phone on its side and stationary | Apple’s setup instructions do not require MagSafe. |
| Continuously visible StandBy | An iPhone model with Always-On display support | Other models can wake StandBy through interaction. |
| 3D spatial photo wallpaper | iPhone 12 or later with iOS 26 | Only eligible photos produce the spatial effect; this does not limit ordinary wallpapers or widgets. |
For Apple’s current StandBy instructions, see Use StandBy to view information at a distance while iPhone is charging. Apple documents Lock Screen widgets for iOS 16 and later in How to add and edit widgets on your iPhone.
How do I add widgets to my iPhone Lock Screen?
Use the Lock Screen editor rather than opening the widget’s app. The available area is limited, so decide which information genuinely saves you a tap.
- Wake the iPhone and touch and hold the current Lock Screen until the wallpaper controls appear.
- Tap Customize.
- Choose Lock Screen if the editor asks which surface you want to change.
- Tap Add Widgets.
- Tap a widget, or drag it into the available widget area beneath the clock.
- Dismiss the widget list, review the arrangement, and tap Done.
If the editor says there is not enough room, remove an existing widget and then add the replacement. Apple’s examples include temperature, air quality, battery level, and upcoming calendar events, but the exact catalog depends on the apps installed on your iPhone.
Pick widgets for glanceability
Use the smallest set that answers a recurring question. A weather widget can tell you whether to take a coat; a calendar widget can show the next appointment; a battery widget can warn that accessories need charging. Filling every slot with low-priority information makes the screen harder to scan.
Some widgets have their own options. For example, a Weather widget may let you choose a location. After placing a widget, tap it in the editor when an Edit Widget option is offered, then select the location, list, account, or other setting exposed by that widget. Not every widget supports editing.
How do I customize an iPhone Lock Screen?
Lock Screen customization includes more than the widget row. You can create several screens and switch between them from the Lock Screen gallery.

Change wallpaper and create additional screens
- Touch and hold the Lock Screen to open the gallery.
- Tap the + button to create a new Lock Screen, or select an existing screen and tap Customize.
- Choose a personal photo, Photo Shuffle, or one of Apple’s built-in wallpaper categories.
- Adjust the crop and appearance, then edit the clock and widget area.
- Tap Done to save the screen.
You can set a wallpaper pair for the Lock Screen and Home Screen, or customize the Home Screen separately. This lets a photo remain on the Lock Screen while the Home Screen uses a different color, photo, or app layout.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse Photo Shuffle deliberately
Photo Shuffle can use Apple’s suggested categories or a specific album. Its shuffle frequencies are On Tap, On Lock, Hourly, and Daily. Choose On Tap when you want control over the next image; choose On Lock or a timed frequency when you want variety without manually changing the wallpaper.
Change the clock and Lock Screen controls
Tap the clock in the editor to select an available appearance and color. The two control positions below the clock can also be changed where the selected Lock Screen supports alternatives. Check the preview after each change: a busy photo can reduce contrast, while a simple background leaves the time and widgets easier to read.
Link a Lock Screen to a Focus
- Open the Lock Screen gallery by touching and holding the current Lock Screen.
- Tap Focus beneath the Lock Screen you want to use.
- Select an existing Focus, such as Work or Personal.
- Return to the gallery and select that Lock Screen when you want its linked Focus to apply.
Linking is useful when the information and notifications you need change with your context. A work screen can show the next meeting and a work Focus, while a personal screen can show reminders and a personal Focus. Switching screens can switch the associated Focus as well.
Apple’s current instructions for Lock Screen creation and Focus links are in Create a custom iPhone Lock Screen.

- Open Settings.
- Tap StandBy and turn StandBy on.
- Connect the iPhone to a charger.
- Place the iPhone on its side and keep it stationary. A charging stand is optional; any stable arrangement that holds the charging phone sideways can work.
- Press the side button to enter the StandBy experience.
- Swipe left or right to move between widget, photo, and clock views.
- Swipe up or down within a view to cycle through that view’s available options.
Apple’s complete procedure is in Use StandBy to view information at a distance while iPhone is charging.
Choose a StandBy view
| View | What it is suited to | How to navigate |
|---|---|---|
| Widget view | Large, glanceable information while the phone charges | Swipe up or down to cycle through widget arrangements and options. |
| Photo view | A rotating photo display or a selected visual backdrop | Swipe up or down to move through available photo presentations. |
| Clock view | A bedside or desk clock with large numerals | Swipe up or down to choose among clock styles. |
| Live Activities | A supported activity shown in full screen while it is active | Follow the on-screen presentation; availability depends on the app and activity. |
The left and right StandBy panes can be configured independently when the selected layout offers two panes. Try a clock on one side and a calendar, battery, or weather widget on the other so the most important information remains visible from across the room.
StandBy’s screen behavior
On supported iPhone models with Always-On display, StandBy can remain visible. Apple does not promise that behavior on every iPhone. On models without Always-On display, wake the view by tapping the display, gently nudging the table, or using Siri.
In Settings > StandBy > Display, Apple currently lists three choices: Automatically, After 20 Seconds, and Never. These settings control how long the screen stays on while StandBy is active; they do not add Always-On capability to a model that lacks it.
Use Night Mode
StandBy’s Night Mode adapts to low ambient light and shows the interface with a red tint when enabled. The red presentation is intended to be less intrusive in a dark bedroom. If the display still turns off, check both the Display setting and whether your iPhone supports Always-On behavior.
Can I use StandBy without MagSafe?
Yes. Apple’s documented starting conditions are a charger, sideways orientation, and a stationary iPhone. MagSafe is not listed as a prerequisite, so a compatible wired or wireless charging setup can be used as long as it keeps the phone charging and stable.

- Up to 10W Wireless Charging: Delivers up to 10W for Samsung Galaxy and 7.5W for iPhone models. Requires a 9V / 2A adapter (not included) for best performance. Charges an iPhone 15 in approximately 3 hours and 47 minutes.
- Wide Compatibility: Compatible with all Qi-certified devices. Works with Apple, Samsung, and other major brands for reliable wireless charging.
- Flexible Viewing: Watch videos comfortably in landscape mode or charge in portrait mode for easy messaging and Face ID.
- Case Requirement: Charges through cases up to 2.5 mm thick made of plastic, rubber, or TPU. Magnetic attachments, metal plates, or credit cards may interfere with charging.
- What You Get: Anker 313 Wireless Charger (Stand) / PowerWave Stand, 3 ft Micro-USB cable, welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
MagSafe does provide one extra convenience: at each location where the iPhone charges with MagSafe, StandBy can remember a preferred view for that location, such as widgets, photos, or a clock. That location memory is separate from the basic requirements for starting StandBy. You do not need MagSafe to use the feature, and you do not need a special charging stand.
What can iPhone widgets do?
Widgets show current information without requiring you to open the full app. Apple’s examples include headlines, weather, reminders, and battery levels. Some widgets are interactive: you might check off a Reminders item, play a Podcasts episode, or turn on a Home accessory directly from the widget.
Interaction and editing depend on the individual widget and app. A widget may expose a list, account, location, or playback choice, while another may only display information. If a widget does not respond to a tap or offer editing controls, that is a limitation of that widget rather than a problem with the Lock Screen.
Understand Smart Stacks
A Smart Stack combines several widgets in one stack. iPhone uses signals such as time, location, and activity to surface what it considers relevant, and you can swipe through the stack yourself. Smart Stacks are primarily a Home Screen and Today View feature; do not confuse them with the smaller, fixed widget area on a Lock Screen.
To manage widgets generally, Apple’s guide Add, edit, and remove widgets on iPhone covers adding, editing, removing, and stacking them. The same guide explains why controls differ between widgets.

Bedside setup
- Use a large clock in StandBy’s clock view.
- Place the phone on its side while charging and enable Night Mode if the display is distracting at night.
- Use a Lock Screen with the next alarm, weather, and battery information for quick checks before getting up.
Workday setup
- Create a Lock Screen linked to a Work Focus.
- Add the next calendar event and a weather or commute-related widget that your installed apps provide.
- Use a restrained wallpaper with strong contrast so the time and widgets remain readable.
Travel or errands setup
- Use a separate Lock Screen linked to a travel or personal Focus.
- Add reminders, battery status, and any available widget that surfaces the information you repeatedly check.
- Use Photo Shuffle with a selected album if you want the screen to change without editing it manually.
Troubleshooting Lock Screen widgets and StandBy
The Lock Screen does not show Customize
Touch and hold the Lock Screen rather than tapping it once. If the wallpaper controls still do not appear, Apple says a passcode may be required before the Lock Screen editor can be opened. Unlock the iPhone and repeat the touch-and-hold gesture.

There is no room for another widget
The widget area has a fixed amount of space. In the editor, remove one of the existing widgets, then tap Add Widgets and add the replacement. A smaller widget may fit where a larger one does not, if that app offers multiple sizes.
StandBy does not start
- Confirm Settings > StandBy is turned on.
- Verify that the iPhone is actually charging.
- Turn the phone sideways and keep it stationary rather than holding it in your hand.
- Press the side button after placing it on the charger.
- If the display goes dark, check Settings > StandBy > Display and the Always-On capability of your model.
MagSafe is not the missing requirement if the phone is charging, sideways, and still. Test the setup on a stable surface before buying additional hardware.
StandBy turns off or will not stay visible
Choose Never under Settings > StandBy > Display if you want the longest available on-screen period, but the result still depends on model support. Apple’s Always-On condition applies to continuous visibility; other iPhones require a tap, a gentle table movement, or Siri to wake the display.

Widget catalogs are app-specific. Update or install the app that supplies the widget, then reopen the widget picker. If the widget appears but has no edit controls, its developer may not expose configurable options. Apple documents this variation rather than guaranteeing identical controls for every widget.
The spatial wallpaper effect is unavailable
Apple’s specified 3D spatial photo wallpaper feature requires an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 26, and only eligible photos support the effect. Ordinary photo wallpapers, Photo Shuffle, clock styles, and widgets do not share that requirement.
For wallpaper choices and the spatial-photo compatibility details, see Apple’s Change your iPhone wallpaper.
Quick Recap
How to keep the setup useful
- Put information you check repeatedly on the Lock Screen; reserve StandBy for information that benefits from a larger, distant display.
- Prefer one clear widget over several redundant ones.
- Review linked Focus settings after creating a new Lock Screen so the intended notifications and apps are allowed.
- Use a stable charging position for StandBy. A stand can improve viewing angle and stability, but it is convenience hardware, not a software requirement.
- Revisit Photo Shuffle frequency and widget locations after a few days. If you routinely ignore an item, replace it with something you actually use.
