To control smart-home devices with Siri, add compatible accessories to Apple Home, give them clear names and room assignments, then ask Siri to operate them or activate a scene. Use a scene when you want one request to coordinate several devices; use an automation when actions should happen in response to a schedule, location, sensor, or another accessory. A home hub is needed for some features—not every local Siri command—so check the accessory, software version, and feature you plan to use.
Before you start: check compatibility and the feature you need
The accessory must support Apple Home through HomeKit or Matter, and its functions must be exposed to Apple Home for Siri to use them. A Matter label alone does not guarantee that every function will appear in Home. Check the specific product’s Apple Home compatibility, supported controls, and whether it uses Thread.

Hub requirements depend on what you want to do. Apple describes a home hub, such as HomePod or Apple TV, for remote control and automations. Apple’s setup guidance also says Matter accessories require a home hub and Thread-based accessories require a Thread-enabled hub. Newer Apple guidance describes limited iPhone-only Matter operation on iOS 18 or later, while Thread accessories still need Thread-capable infrastructure. Because these requirements vary by accessory, software, and feature, check Apple’s current instructions for the exact setup rather than assuming every Matter device works hub-free—or that every Siri command needs a hub. Apple Home and HomePod or Apple TV availability can also vary by country or region.
A HomePod or HomePod mini is useful if you want to speak to Siri hands-free in a room; it can also provide home hub features. It is not a universal prerequisite for controlling a device locally with Siri from an Apple device.

Add accessories and organize your Home
- Prepare the accessory. Make sure it is powered on and connected to your network. Open the Home app on iPhone, tap the add control, choose Add Accessory, then follow the onscreen setup. The exact prompts depend on the accessory. See Apple’s accessory setup instructions.
- Give it a natural, distinct name. Choose something easy to say, such as “porch light” or “bedroom lamp.” Apple says the accessory name assigned during Home setup can be used to control it with Siri. Avoid duplicate or confusing names.
- Assign a room. Put each accessory in the room where it belongs so room-level requests are meaningful—for example, “Turn off the lights in the bedroom.”
- Use zones for larger homes. Group rooms into a zone such as “downstairs” if you want to address several rooms together. Apple’s Home setup guide describes grouping first-floor rooms into a “downstairs” zone.
- Test one simple request. Start with a single device before creating scenes or automations. The available Siri controls depend on what that accessory exposes in Apple Home.
Ask Siri to control devices and check their status
Once accessories are configured in Home, try a direct command, a room-level request, or a question about device status. Apple’s examples for HomePod include:
- “Turn on the porch light.”
- “Turn off the lights in here” or “Turn off the lights in the bedroom.”
- “Is the porch light on?”
- “Is the front door locked?”
Use the name you gave the accessory, and be specific when the same kind of device appears in more than one room. A status question works only for information the accessory reports to Apple Home.

Use a scene when one request should coordinate devices
A scene is a named set of accessory actions you can start together, either from the Home app or with Siri. For example, a “Good Night” scene could turn off lights and lock the front door; Apple’s scene guidance also gives “Morning” as an example for starting audio. What you can include depends on the accessories in your Home.

Use an automation when an event should trigger the action
An automation runs without a spoken request when its trigger occurs. Apple lists time or day, a person’s arrival or departure, sensor detection, and another accessory’s action among the trigger types. For instance, you can create a time-based routine or have a compatible sensor trigger a light. Available options depend on the devices and software in your Home.
- In the Home app, tap the add control, choose Add Automation, and select a trigger, such as a time, a person’s arrival or departure, or a sensor detecting something.
- Set the trigger details, then choose the accessories or scene to run when it occurs.
- Review the conditions and selected actions, save the automation, and test it when practical.
Location-based automations require the relevant invited users to have location sharing set up as Apple’s instructions specify. If the goal is simply to start several actions when you ask, make a scene instead; an automation is for actions that should follow a trigger.

What to do if Siri does not control an accessory
- Check the name and room. Confirm the accessory appears in the Home app and that you are using its assigned name or room in the request.
- Confirm the accessory’s Home integration. A device may expose only some of its functions to Apple Home. Check the maker’s compatibility details if a control or status is missing.
- Check the network and power. Make sure the accessory is powered and connected, then try controlling it in the Home app.
- Check hub needs for the requested feature. Remote access and automations have hub requirements described by Apple; Thread-based accessories require Thread-capable infrastructure. Requirements for Matter control can depend on the iPhone software version and accessory.
- Try a simpler command. Test a direct on/off request before troubleshooting a scene or automation, which adds more accessories or trigger conditions.
How Apple describes Home command privacy
Apple says HomeKit commands are sent end-to-end encrypted and authenticated from the user’s device to the home hub using Apple Identity Service, then forwarded to the accessory using HomeKit Accessory Protocol or Matter. Apple also says Siri receives minimal home configuration details to recognize commands. This describes Apple’s stated HomeKit communication design; it is not a blanket guarantee about every accessory maker, network, or account.
