Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse appears to fit the metroidvania tradition, but Konami has not officially called it a metroidvania. The publisher describes it as an exploration-based 2D action game, while Konami’s communications head has explicitly said it is not a roguelike or roguelite. The most accurate description for now is a 2D action-exploration game whose metroidvania classification remains an informed genre interpretation.
What genre is Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse?
Konami’s official wording is “an exploration-based 2D action game” in its announcement. Its official game page calls it a “2D Action-Exploration game” and describes faster, more fluid gameplay. Konami also says the game is being developed jointly by KONAMI and Evil Empire, with advisory help from Motion Twin.

Those descriptions put action and exploration at the center, but they do not confirm a formal genre label. Calling the game a metroidvania is a reasonable interpretation of that focus and the Castlevania series’ association with the genre—not a label Konami has officially applied to this title.

Metroidvania is commonly used for action-adventure games that emphasize exploring a world and gradually opening up access to more of it. Konami has confirmed that players can freely explore “vast, elaborately crafted maps,” and PC Gamer has interpreted the design as following the Symphony of the Night school of Castlevania. Together, those details make “appears to fit the metroidvania tradition” a defensible shorthand.

- Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse | Night One Edition includes: Main Game, Alucard Style Costume, Digital Sound & Art Gallery, Trevor Style Costume, Sypha Style Costume, and Family's Grace (Relic).
- Medieval Paris, Where the Tolling Bells Herald the End - 1499: Paris is engulfed in flames as monstrous creatures suddenly emerge from the shadows. Armed with the legendary holy whip, the Vampire Killer, Trevor Belmont’s successor ventures into the burning streets and the looming castle to hunt down the beasts. Can they save the city from the brink of destruction?
- Satisfying Whip Action - The iconic whip of the series is now more important than ever! Crack your whip to move around freely like a trapeze artist! Master the whip mechanics and be creative to pounce on your prey like a wolf in fast-paced combats!
- A Large Selection of Weapons and Abilities - The whip is not the only tool at your disposal. You will need to strategically plan your next move in combat and make full use of all the weapons and abilities to stand a chance!
- Environment Hazards That Will make you grit your teeth - Biomes are packed with secrets, traps and puzzles. It is not just about muscles, it's about brains too!
However, the available descriptions do not establish how the maps connect, whether routes are blocked by abilities, how often players must backtrack, or what progression systems the game uses. Exploration alone does not prove that every familiar metroidvania mechanic is present. Those specifics should not be treated as confirmed until fuller gameplay details establish them.
Is Belmont’s Curse a roguelike or roguelite?
No. Tommy Williams, Konami’s head of communications for the Americas, said the game “is not a roguelike or roguelite game” and described its maps as freely explorable and elaborately crafted. PC Gamer reported Williams’s comments, which were given to The Verge. The involvement of Evil Empire and Motion Twin does not make this game a roguelike by default.

Release date listed by Konami
As of October 3, 2026, Konami’s game page listed October 15, 2026 as the release date, so that date was still in the future at the time. Konami’s announcement also said pre-orders opened alongside the reveal of a Midnight Edition.
