Move your pointer over the content you want to scroll, hold Shift, and turn the mouse wheel. Some Windows apps use this gesture to scroll sideways, but Windows does not make every app respond to it. If it does not work, try the content’s horizontal scrollbar or a mouse with a supported tilt wheel.
Try Shift + wheel over the content
- Place the pointer over the wide content area you want to move sideways—not over a toolbar or an unrelated pane.
- Hold Shift and turn the mouse wheel.
- Watch how that specific app and control respond. It may scroll horizontally, scroll vertically, do nothing, or perform another action.
If the gesture does not move the content sideways, use a horizontal scrollbar if one is available.

Why the gesture varies between apps
Windows reports mouse-wheel input to a window procedure, including whether Shift is down. Microsoft’s WM_MOUSEWHEEL message reference documents that input detail; it does not require every application to interpret Shift + wheel as horizontal scrolling. The receiving application determines what the gesture does.

Try a mouse with a tilt wheel
A mouse with a wheel that tilts left or right can provide a separate way to scroll horizontally. Microsoft describes wheel rotation as vertical scrolling and wheel tilt as horizontal scrolling in its mouse interaction guidance. This depends on the mouse and the application supporting the input; it is not a guarantee for every program.

Check the Windows mouse setting
On the documented Windows 11 path, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Additional mouse settings > Wheel and look for the horizontal-scrolling option. Microsoft notes that “The mouse has to support horizontal scrolling for this setting to apply” in its Change mouse settings instructions.
Windows versions, mouse drivers, and device software can expose different options. This setting applies to horizontal scrolling with a supported mouse; it is not a universal switch that enables Shift + wheel in every app.

Choose a sideways-scrolling method
| Method | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Shift + mouse wheel | Works only if the particular app and control map the gesture to horizontal movement. |
| Horizontal scrollbar | Use it when the content provides one; its availability depends on the app and content. |
