To turn on Caps Lock in Gboard, open an app with a text field, bring up the on-screen keyboard, and double-tap Shift. Tap Shift again to turn Caps Lock off. Google documents this same gesture for Gboard on Android and on iPhone or iPad.

| Platform | Where the action takes place | Availability context documented by Google |
|---|---|---|
| Android | Gboard’s on-screen Shift key after a text field is selected | Google’s Android help page notes that some Gboard instructions require Android 7.0 or later. It does not identify the Caps Lock instruction itself as version-limited. |

The shared Gboard Caps Lock sequence
Android and iOS use the same on-screen gesture. You do not need a separate physical keyboard, stylus, manual, or other accessory for this operation.

- Open an app that contains a place to type.
- Tap the text field so Gboard appears on screen.
- Double-tap the on-screen Shift key. This turns on Caps Lock.
- When you want to stop using Caps Lock, tap Shift again.
Google’s Gboard Help states the procedure directly: “Turn on caps lock: Double-tap Shift. To turn it off again, tap Shift.” The instruction applies to the on-screen Gboard keyboard, not to a physical keyboard connected to the device.
How to turn on Caps Lock in Gboard on Android
Open Gboard from a text field
Start in an app where text can be entered. Google’s Android example apps include Gmail and Keep, but the important requirement is the presence of a selectable text field. Tap that field to display Gboard.

Enable Caps Lock
With Gboard visible, double-tap the Shift key. The double tap is the action Google specifies for enabling Caps Lock. Once it is enabled, continue entering the text that needs uppercase letters.
Disable Caps Lock
Tap Shift once more when you want to return from Caps Lock. This is the documented way to turn the mode off.
Android version qualification
Google’s Android Gboard Help page says that some of its steps work only on Android 7.0 and later. The page does not single out the Caps Lock instruction as one of those version-limited steps, so the official material does not establish a narrower Android requirement for this gesture. If you are checking compatibility, distinguish that general note from a specific claim that Caps Lock requires Android 7.0.

Enable and disable Caps Lock
Double-tap Shift to enable Caps Lock. Tap Shift again to disable it. The gesture is the same on iPhone and iPad as it is on Android; the difference in Google’s documentation is the operating-system availability information, not the Caps Lock sequence.
iOS version qualification
Google says Gboard is available on iPhone and iPad with iOS 9 and later. That is the availability statement in the iPhone and iPad Gboard instructions. It does not add a separate, higher version requirement for the Caps Lock gesture.
What the Shift key does in this procedure
For this task, Shift is the key displayed on Gboard’s on-screen keyboard. A double-tap changes the keyboard into Caps Lock mode, and another tap of Shift ends that mode. The operation is performed entirely within Gboard while a text field is active.

The official instructions reviewed explain how to enable and disable Caps Lock, but they do not describe the behavior of a single, ordinary tap on Shift when Caps Lock is not active. Therefore, do not infer an additional single-tap behavior from the Caps Lock instructions alone. For the purpose of this guide, the reliable documented controls are the double-tap to enable and the follow-up tap to disable.

Using Caps Lock without losing track of the state
For a short all-uppercase entry
Place the cursor in the intended field, double-tap Shift, enter the uppercase text, and tap Shift again immediately after that entry. Turning it off at the end of the short block reduces the chance that a later word is entered in the wrong mode.
For a longer block
If several words, a label, or another sustained block must be uppercase, enable Caps Lock before typing the block. When the block is complete, use the same Shift key to turn Caps Lock off. The sequence does not require leaving the app or opening a separate Gboard settings screen.
Checking the result
When the result matters, enter a brief test character or word after enabling Caps Lock and check the text in the field. If the mode is not what you intended, use the documented Shift control again rather than switching apps or attaching another keyboard. This check is especially useful before entering a long value that is difficult to edit.

Gboard is not visible
- Confirm that you opened an app with a place to type.
- Tap the text field itself; the instructions begin only after a text field has been selected.
- Make sure the keyboard currently shown is Gboard. The documented action refers specifically to Gboard’s on-screen Shift key.
If there is no active text field, there is no on-screen Gboard key on which to perform the gesture. Return to a field that accepts text and try again.

The double-tap did not enable Caps Lock
- Repeat the gesture while Gboard is fully open.
- Tap the Shift key itself twice rather than tapping elsewhere on the keyboard.
- Check that you are using the on-screen Gboard keyboard, not a different keyboard interface.
Google’s documented instruction is specifically a double-tap, so a single tap should not be treated as confirmation that Caps Lock was enabled.
You cannot tell whether Caps Lock is still on
Use the control Google documents for ending the mode: tap Shift again. If the text field is important, type a short check and inspect the result before continuing. Avoid relying on an undocumented interpretation of a key state; the official pages establish the enable and disable gestures, not every visual detail of the keyboard’s interface.
You are following an Android version note
Do not automatically treat Google’s general Android 7.0 note as proof that this particular gesture is unavailable on earlier versions. The Android help page says some steps are version-limited but does not identify the Caps Lock step as one of them. The available documentation therefore supports the gesture itself without assigning it a narrower minimum Android version.

Common situations where Caps Lock helps
Acronyms and fixed uppercase labels
Caps Lock is useful when a field requires a sequence of uppercase letters rather than a single capitalized word. Enable it before entering the sequence and disable it afterward so the next entry is handled deliberately.
Notes and messages
In a note, email, or message, select the text field first, enable Caps Lock for the portion that needs uppercase letters, and turn it off before continuing with ordinary text. The app does not change the gesture; the essential condition is that Gboard is present in an active text field.
Forms with several fields
Caps Lock belongs to the current keyboard session. When you move to another field, check the text you are about to enter and use Shift again if you need to end the mode. This keeps the decision tied to the field where you are typing rather than assuming that every field has the same requirement.
What you do—and do not—need
- Required: an Android device, iPhone, or iPad with Gboard available; an app containing a text field; and access to Gboard’s on-screen keyboard.
- Not required: a physical keyboard, a stylus, a separate Caps Lock accessory, or a manual for the gesture.
- Action: double-tap Shift to enable Caps Lock and tap Shift again to disable it.
Google’s official Android and iPhone/iPad instructions identify no additional physical product as necessary. The task is a keyboard gesture performed directly on the screen.
Android and iOS: what is actually different?
The practical Caps Lock operation is not different between the two platforms. Both use the same double-tap-and-tap-again sequence. The documented differences are contextual:
| Detail | Android documentation | iPhone and iPad documentation |
|---|---|---|
| Keyboard used | Gboard on screen after selecting a text field | Gboard on screen after selecting a text field |
| Enable gesture | Double-tap Shift | Double-tap Shift |
| Disable gesture | Tap Shift again | Tap Shift again |
| Version information | Some Android help steps are noted as Android 7.0 and later; Caps Lock is not specifically identified as version-limited | Gboard availability is stated for iOS 9 and later |
This is why instructions written for one platform can still answer the core Caps Lock question on the other: the key sequence is shared, while the availability notes are platform-specific.
Quick checklist
- Open an app with a text field.
- Tap the field so Gboard appears.
- Double-tap the on-screen Shift key.
- Enter the uppercase text.
- Tap Shift again when Caps Lock should end.
- If the gesture does not work, confirm that Gboard—not another keyboard—is visible and that you tapped inside an active text field.
Bottom line for Gboard users
Gboard’s Caps Lock control is the same on Android, iPhone, and iPad: double-tap the on-screen Shift key to turn it on, then tap Shift again to turn it off. The only platform qualifications supplied by Google are the general Android 7.0 note for some help steps and Gboard’s stated iOS 9-and-later availability.
