A recording is a useful starting point, not automatically a reliable regression test.
What records and replays Selenium tests?
Selenium IDE is Selenium’s browser-extension tool for recording and playing back browser actions. Selenium’s overview lists Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge as supported browsers; browser-store availability and compatibility can change, so check the current installation options before you begin. IDE is useful for a quick bug-reproduction script, exploratory testing, or learning how Selenium represents browser interactions. For maintainable browser regression tests and execution across environments, Selenium’s documentation points to WebDriver instead. Selenium overview

Record and replay a test in Selenium IDE
-
Create a project
Open Selenium IDE and create a project. Give it a name and enter the base URL of the application you want to test. In the documented workflow, IDE opens a browser window at that URL and begins recording. Getting started with Selenium IDE

-
Record the user journey
In the opened browser, perform the steps you want to capture: for example, navigate to a page, enter values in a form, and submit it. Return to IDE and use its recording control to stop. Review the recorded commands rather than assuming every interaction was captured in the right way.
-
Save the project
Save from the IDE. The documented project format is a
.sidefile. You can organize tests into suites when you want to play a group of tests together. Getting started with Selenium IDE -
Replay a test or suite
Select a test or suite and use the play control. Playback runs in a browser; according to the getting-started guide, IDE reuses the recording window if it is still open, and otherwise opens another window. The guide refers to the command-line runner for additional browsers; check that runner’s current documentation for browser and version compatibility before relying on cross-browser execution.

Check the result, not just the clicks
A replay that repeats clicks and typing does not by itself prove the application reached the expected state. Add checks for the result, such as a confirmation message or expected page content. Selenium IDE documents
assertcommands, which stop a test when a check fails, andverifycommands, which report a failed check while allowing execution to continue. Selenium IDE command reference
Make a recorded test more useful
- Test meaningful outcomes. Add assertions or verifications for application state, not only for the sequence of interactions.
- Replay after editing. Confirm the test still works from its starting conditions and inspect any failed commands.
- Treat recordings as drafts. A captured journey can help reproduce a bug or explore a flow, but it does not guarantee robust handling of changing pages, data, or environments.
- Move to code when needed. If the test needs reusable logic, maintainable structure, or wider execution across environments, export where suitable or implement it with WebDriver.
Export a test to WebDriver code
Selenium IDE’s export documentation describes exporting a test or suite to WebDriver code and lists C# NUnit, Java JUnit, JavaScript Mocha, and Python pytest targets. Export options can depend on the IDE version installed; confirm the available targets and inspect generated code before adopting it in a project. Selenium IDE code export
Export is a bridge from a recorded workflow to code, not a substitute for reviewing the test design. Add or adjust checks, organize the code for your project, and run it in the environments where it must work.

When to use IDE versus WebDriver
| Need | Selenium IDE | Selenium WebDriver |
|---|---|---|
| Quickly capture a browser journey | Good fit for recording, replaying, bug reproduction, and exploratory testing. | Requires writing and maintaining code. |
| Learn Selenium interactions | Can help illustrate recorded commands and provide a starting point for export. | Useful when learning to build coded tests directly. |
| Maintain a regression suite or share execution across environments | May be a starting point, but a recording alone does not provide a complete test architecture. | Better suited to robust, coded browser automation, as described in Selenium’s overview. |
Troubleshooting recorded playback
- The browser does not open at the intended site: Check the project’s base URL and create or update the project with the application URL you intend to test.
- Playback fails at a command: Inspect the failed step and the page state at that point. A recorded interaction may no longer match the page; revise the step and add an explicit check for the intended result.
- The test completes but does not catch a broken outcome: Add an
assertorverifyfor the expected content or state. Clicks and typing alone do not establish that the application behaved correctly. - You need a browser beyond the IDE playback setup: Selenium’s getting-started guide points to the command-line runner for additional browsers. Consult its current documentation for compatibility with your installed version rather than assuming a browser or version is supported.
- You cannot find a documented export target: Export formats and menus may vary by installed release. Check the current IDE export interface and documentation before choosing a language-specific workflow.
Installation and version notes
Selenium’s getting-started and export pages describe the workflow, but their interface details and screenshots can become dated. The Selenium IDE repository also describes binary, npm, and manual installation routes; its manual-build instructions list NodeJS v16 and pnpm. Those are build instructions, not prerequisites for ordinary use of the IDE. Selenium IDE repository

If you need a screenshot rather than an interactive browser test, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.
The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, and yearly billing gives two months free. Every feature is available on every plan. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Selenium IDE save recordings as source-code files?
The documented IDE project format is a .side file. Export to WebDriver code is a separate option, with available targets depending on the installed version.
Can I run a Selenium IDE test in more than one browser?
Selenium’s getting-started guide points to the command-line runner for additional browsers. Check current runner documentation for the specific browser and version you intend to use.
