How to Use ScreenshotMachine to Create Website Thumbnails for an Indian Blog

Use ScreenshotMachine’s HTTP GET API to capture a webpage, size it for an Indian blog, and embed or save the resulting thumbnail.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ScreenshotMachine turns a webpage URL into an image through an HTTP GET request. For a blog thumbnail, choose the page, request a fixed image size such as the documented 320×240 example, then embed the returned image URL or save the response as a file. The workflow is the same for an Indian blog; use the dimensions and crop that fit your theme rather than assuming a special India-specific setting.

What you need before you start

  • A ScreenshotMachine account and customer key.
  • The public URL of the webpage to capture.
  • The dimensions, device framing and image format that fit your blog’s thumbnail slot.
  • A decision about whether a cached image is acceptable or the capture must be fresh.

Screenshot Machine describes its API as based on HTTP GET requests. The endpoint is https://api.screenshotmachine.com/; the target url and key are required. See the official API documentation for the current parameter syntax.

Create a key and protect it

  1. Register for a ScreenshotMachine account and open your user profile to retrieve the customer key. The vendor’s Python example describes this account flow.
  2. Do not place an unprotected customer key in public page source. For public calls, the vendor recommends configuring a secret phrase and sending a URL-derived hash; its documentation says requests with an incorrect hash are ignored once a secret phrase is configured. Follow the current hash-generation instructions in the API docs, and keep the secret phrase on your server rather than exposing it in browser code.

Choose thumbnail dimensions, framing and format

Use the actual image slot in your blog theme as the starting point. ScreenshotMachine documents width values from 100 to 1,920 pixels and height values from 100 to 9,999 pixels, or full for a full-page capture. Its example website-thumbnail size is 320x240. Supported device choices are desktop, phone and tablet; available image formats are JPG, PNG and GIF.

Choice When it fits
Fixed width and height, such as 320×240 A compact preview that needs to fit a defined card or post slot. Check how your theme crops it; the API dimensions alone do not guarantee a particular crop.
Full-page height (height=full) A long page where the entire page is more useful than a compact preview. It can produce a much taller image and may take longer to capture.
Desktop, phone or tablet Select the layout closest to the intended preview. A phone capture is useful when you specifically want to show a mobile layout rather than simply shrink a desktop screenshot.
JPG, PNG or GIF Choose a format your blog pipeline and image slot handle. Confirm the response format and file extension stay consistent.

The reviewed API documentation does not specify India-only capture settings or an India-specific thumbnail size. For an Indian audience, preview the resulting thumbnail in the blog’s actual theme and check that text and important interface details remain legible at the displayed size.

Build a screenshot request

Percent-encode the target page URL when constructing the request. A basic request has the endpoint, customer key and target URL; add the documented size and format parameters for the thumbnail you need. The documentation’s 320×240 example is a reasonable initial setting, not a requirement.

https://api.screenshotmachine.com/?key=YOUR_CUSTOMER_KEY&url=https%3A%2F%2Fexample.com&dimension=320x240&format=png

Parameter names and accepted values are subject to ScreenshotMachine’s current API documentation. Do not treat the illustrative URL above as a substitute for checking that syntax, especially when adding security hashing, delay or cache controls.

Wait for content to load

The delay option controls how long the service waits before capture; the documentation lists choices from immediate capture through 10 seconds. A short or immediate capture may work for simple pages. Increase the wait when images, dynamic content or animations have not settled. Longer waits can increase response time, so use the shortest value that reliably produces the content your thumbnail needs.

Choose fresh or cached output

ScreenshotMachine documents cacheLimit from 0 to 14 days, including fractional-day intervals. Set cacheLimit=0 when you need a fresh render; otherwise, allow caching when a repeat thumbnail can remain unchanged. The vendor says its default cache limit is 14 days and its pricing FAQ says cached repeat requests are not billed as fresh screenshots.

Understand zoom

The documented zoom range is 10–400. ScreenshotMachine notes that zoom is ignored for screenshots smaller than typical device dimensions, so do not rely on it to refine a small thumbnail without testing the actual result.

Embed the image or save it

The generated API URL can be used as an image source, or the response can be downloaded and stored alongside your blog assets. The vendor’s Python example demonstrates both approaches.

Embed a generated URL

<img src="SCREENSHOTMACHINE_GENERATED_IMAGE_URL" alt="Preview of Example website" width="320" height="240">

Use the complete generated URL, including the properly encoded target URL and any required security hash. Keep credentials out of public HTML unless the request is protected as the vendor directs.

Save the API response with Python

Install the dependency with python -m pip install requests. This example writes the image response to a file; use the authentication and parameter format specified in ScreenshotMachine’s current documentation.

import requests

params = {
    "key": "YOUR_CUSTOMER_KEY",
    "url": "https://example.com",
    "dimension": "320x240",
    "format": "png",
}
response = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotmachine.com/",
    params=params,
    timeout=60,
)
response.raise_for_status()

with open("website-thumbnail.png", "wb") as image_file:
    image_file.write(response.content)

Before publishing, verify that the response is an image rather than an error image, and inspect its dimensions and appearance. Add any secret-phrase hash required by your configured account; do not put the secret phrase itself in the script if the script will be distributed publicly.

Estimate usage and cost

ScreenshotMachine’s published pricing values observed on October 3, 2026 are vendor-listed plan figures, not independent measurements, and may change. The listed monthly amounts are in euros:

Plan Published price Fresh screenshots included Published additional screenshot rate
Starter Free 100 per month Not stated for this plan
Basic €9 per month 2,500 per month €0.004
Pro €59 per month 20,000 per month €0.003
Enterprise €99 per month 50,000 per month €0.002

The vendor’s pricing page says additional screenshots are billed in groups of 1,000 rounded down, so 999 or fewer additional screenshots do not add a group charge. It also says cached repeats are not billed and screenshots are cached for 14 days. Check the live pricing page before choosing a plan; the figures above describe what ScreenshotMachine published on October 3, 2026, not a guarantee of current availability. The page mentions EU VAT rules but does not establish India-specific taxes or payment handling.

Troubleshoot failed or incorrect thumbnails

When a request does not return the expected screenshot, inspect the X-Screenshotmachine-Response header and the returned image. The API documentation lists these error cases:

  • Invalid key: confirm the customer key is current and correctly supplied.
  • Invalid or missing URL: include the required url parameter, check the target address, and percent-encode it correctly.
  • No credits: check the account’s remaining allowance and plan before retrying.
  • Invalid selectors: if using selector-related options, verify that the selector is valid for the target page.
  • Blank or incomplete page: increase delay within the documented options if the page needs time for images or animations to load; also confirm the requested page itself is available.
  • Wrong size or framing: check width, height, device and format parameters, then compare the result with the blog theme’s actual display slot.
  • Stale image: use cacheLimit=0 when a fresh capture is required, while allowing for the additional fresh-capture usage.
  • Public request rejected: if a secret phrase is configured, generate the correct URL-derived hash as documented. Never substitute the secret phrase for the hash or expose it in public source.

Use captured pages responsibly

ScreenshotMachine’s terms say captured screenshots may be viewed, downloaded and modified for personal and commercial purposes, while prohibiting harmful or unlawful use and certain automated data-collection activities involving its service website. Those terms do not establish that every third-party page, image, logo or other captured material may be republished on a blog. Check the rights and permissions for the content you use. The terms page states that it was last updated July 22, 2020, so review the current terms before relying on it.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server: its one-call API is an alternative when you want to request a capture without building your own browser workflow. For a typical image capture, use the API endpoint and replace the target URL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie and consent banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with supported newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
