ScreenshotMachine’s documentation describes a Bash/ curl example for its API; it does not call that example a dedicated CLI. The local og-screenshots project is a separate tool, marked beta in its README. Its README says it was tested only on macOS and that the process can sometimes hang, so compatibility on other platforms and reliability should not be assumed.

Use ScreenshotMachine’s hosted API from Bash
The API request is an HTTP GET to ScreenshotMachine’s documented screenshot endpoint. You supply your customer key and the URL to capture; dimensions and other capture settings are optional. The example below keeps credentials as placeholders. Get a customer key through your ScreenshotMachine account rather than putting a real key in a public script.

Make and save a request
- Choose the page URL and output dimensions. ScreenshotMachine documents width-by-height dimensions, with width from 100 through 1920 pixels and height from 100 through 9999 pixels;
fullis accepted for full-page captures. - Set the format and device if needed. Documented formats are JPG, PNG, and GIF; device values are
desktop,phone, andtablet. - Send the GET request and redirect the image response to a file.

The --data-urlencode options ensure that characters in the URL are encoded as query parameters. ScreenshotMachine’s own guide recommends percent-encoding the page URL.

Adjust capture behavior safely
- Full-page capture: use
dimension=fullwhen you need the full page rather than a fixed-size image. - Wait time: increase the delay for long pages, images, or animations that need time to render. ScreenshotMachine recommends a longer delay for these cases.
- Cache:
cacheLimitaccepts 0 through 14 days. Use zero to request that a cached image not be used. - Public requests and secret phrases: the API guide recommends a hash for requests made directly from public HTML. The hash is the MD5 of the URL parameter value followed by the secret phrase. If a secret phrase has been set, requests with a missing or incorrect hash are ignored. Do not expose the secret phrase in public client-side code; use a server-side request when you need to keep it private.
The ScreenshotMachine Python repository also demonstrates constructing an API URL and retrieving the image to output.png: ScreenshotMachine’s screenshotmachine-python repository. The API documentation does not establish a current price or a free allowance, so check the provider’s current account terms before relying on a particular cost.
Generate Open Graph images with the local og-screenshots CLI
Use this route if by “ScreenshotMachine CLI” you meant a command-line tool dedicated to producing Open Graph images. It is a distinct Node.js project, not a ScreenshotMachine product. The project README lists Node.js 16+, Chrome, and ImageMagick’s convert command as requirements.

Process a sitemap or RSS feed
The required --url accepts one URL, a sitemap, or an RSS feed. When given a sitemap or feed, the tool can process multiple detected URLs. Keep the input scoped to pages for which you actually need images, and use the project’s cap and tuning options when appropriate.

Troubleshooting
The ScreenshotMachine URL is rejected or behaves unexpectedly
- Confirm that the request includes both the customer key and a page URL. URL-encode the URL; in Bash, use
--data-urlencode. - Check that dimensions use the documented width-by-height format and stay within the documented ranges, or use
fullfor a full-page capture. - If a secret phrase is set and the request is made from public HTML, a missing or incorrect hash causes the request to be ignored. Keep the phrase out of browser code.
The local CLI cannot find Chrome or ImageMagick
Install the listed dependencies or set --chrome-path and --imagemagick-path to their executable paths. The README’s platform testing is limited to macOS, so failures elsewhere may reflect unverified compatibility.
The local run hangs or does not replace an image
The project README warns that runs can sometimes hang. Its default behavior also skips images already present in the output directory; use --overwrite when replacement is intended. The default timeout is 60000 milliseconds, and the README lists --max-screenshots and --window-size as controls if you need to limit or adjust a run.
