You can use Samsung DeX on a supported Galaxy Tab without an external monitor: turn on DeX from Quick Settings, then work in resizable app windows on the tablet. For a larger workspace, connect a monitor or TV by USB-C to HDMI, or connect wirelessly to a compatible display. A keyboard and mouse are optional; check your exact tablet model and software version because available modes and menus vary.

Samsung lists standalone DeX support for Galaxy Tab S4, Tab S6, Tab S7 series, Tab S8 series, Tab S9 series, Tab A9+, Tab S10 series, Tab S11 series, and Tab A11+, as well as Z TriFold. Start DeX on the tablet screen
- Swipe down from the top-right of the screen with two fingers to open Quick Settings.
- Tap DeX. If you see Wireless DeX instead, press and hold it to open the DeX menu. Choose Quick panel button, then Switch to desktop workspace.
- Open the apps you need. Use their title-bar controls or the taskbar to resize, maximize, minimize, or close windows; apps can also open in pop-up windows.
You can control standalone DeX with the touchscreen or S Pen. A keyboard cover, or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, can make longer typing sessions more comfortable, but you do not need to buy either to use DeX. On devices running Android 16 with One UI 8.0 or later, Samsung also documents entering the updated standalone workspace by launching an app from Home and dragging down on its header bar. Menu labels can vary by model and software.

Connect a monitor or TV by cable
- Connect the tablet’s USB-C port to the display’s HDMI input using a DeX cable, an HDMI-to-USB-C cable, or an HDMI adapter that supports display output from your tablet.
- Unlock the tablet if prompted and tap Start to enable desktop mode. If the display mirrors the tablet instead, open the DeX notification or Quick Settings and select DeX.
- Use the tablet’s touch controls, S Pen, keyboard cover, or compatible input devices to work with the windows on screen.
Samsung’s guidance for its DeX cable says wired keyboards and mice do not work through that cable. If you need a keyboard or mouse with that setup, pair Bluetooth devices. Connect wirelessly to a TV or smart monitor
- On the tablet, open Settings > Connected devices > Samsung DeX > Connect wirelessly.
- Select the TV or smart monitor, tap Start now, and approve the connection on both the tablet and display.
- Keep the tablet near the display to reduce stuttering or lag. Samsung notes that a DeX connection to a Samsung TV remote may not work properly while the tablet screen is off.
For input, use the tablet’s touchpad icon, S Pen, keyboard cover, or compatible USB or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Confirm the display supports Miracast and consult the device-specific menus if your software presents different labels. Samsung’s tablet guide covers wireless setup.
Make the workspace easier to use
For external displays, DeX settings include controls such as font size, resolution, rotation, and screen timeout. Adjust these if text is difficult to read or the image does not fit. In app windows, use title-bar controls or the taskbar to resize, maximize, minimize, and close; Samsung also describes snapping windows left or right and moving them to another display in its DeX app guide.

Samsung says its updated workspace features include entry from Home and up to four workspaces, but these features require a Galaxy Tab or Z TriFold running Android 16 and One UI 8.0 or later. Eligible devices can switch between workspaces in Recents. Samsung describes the redesign this way: “Samsung DeX has been redesigned, unifying its interface into the ‘New’ mode on Galaxy Tabs and Z TriFold.” See Samsung’s workspace guide for feature and software conditions.

Know the app and display limits
- DeX is an Android app workflow, not a guarantee that every app behaves like its desktop-computer counterpart. Samsung says apps generally run on one screen only; the same app cannot run simultaneously on the tablet and external display.
- DeX for PC is no longer supported on devices released with or updated to One UI 7 or later, according to Samsung’s app guidance.
- Samsung’s tablet guide says touchscreen monitors are not supported for DeX.
Troubleshoot a blank or poorly fitting display
- No image: Check that your exact tablet supports DeX and the connection mode you are trying to use. For a wired setup, check the cable, adapter, HDMI input, and display-output compatibility. For wireless DeX, check that the TV or monitor supports Miracast.
- Wireless stuttering or lag: Move the tablet closer to the display and confirm the display’s wireless compatibility.
- Image is distorted or does not fill the screen: Check resolution and screen-fit settings, along with DeX screen zoom and font-size options.
- External display will not connect from a tablet already in DeX: Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance gives a Classic-mode instruction for this situation. Because the steps depend on software and mode, check the current instructions for your model rather than treating Classic mode as a universal requirement.
