Choose a 4K OLED gaming monitor by matching its resolution and refresh-rate modes to the device, connection, and games you actually use. 4K describes image resolution; hertz describes how often the display can refresh. A high maximum refresh rate is useful only when the rest of the signal chain supports the mode.
What resolution and refresh rate tell you
Resolution is the number of pixels used to form an image. A 4K UHD display has a resolution of 3840×2160. Refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), is how often the screen can update its image each second. The two specifications describe different things: resolution affects image detail, while refresh rate sets the display’s supported update rate.

A monitor’s maximum refresh rate does not guarantee that a console or PC, a particular game, and the connection will all deliver that rate at 4K. Treat the advertised maximum as one part of a compatible mode, not as a promise about game performance.

How to decide which mode fits your setup
Start with the device and games
List the console or PC you plan to connect and the games you play. Check whether they support the resolution and refresh rate you want. Sony says PS5 supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K/120 Hz video output, but its 120 Hz setting is for supported displays and games; console output support does not mean every game renders at 120 frames per second. For PC, check the graphics card’s output, the connection, and the game’s settings. The available product specifications do not establish universal PC hardware requirements or game-by-game frame rates.

Choose the resolution for your screen use
Consider screen size and how far you sit from it when deciding whether the extra pixel detail of 4K matters to you. Your preferred genres, desk space, and tolerance for lower frame rates also shape the choice. There is no single resolution-and-refresh combination that suits every player.
Check refresh rate at the resolution you intend to use
Compare the monitor’s refresh-rate specification at your intended resolution, rather than looking only at its highest advertised number. For example, LG lists its 48GQ900-B as a 3840×2160 monitor with 120 Hz refresh and an overclocked mode up to 138 Hz. That is a product specification, not a guarantee that your device and games will use either mode.

Confirm VRR and the complete connection
Variable refresh rate (VRR) adjusts the display’s refresh rate in real time to match the connected device’s output. Check VRR support across the device, monitor, connection, and game; support on one component alone is not enough. Sony notes that PS5 VRR results depend on the display.

What the product examples show—and what they do not
Manufacturer specifications illustrate that products pair resolution and refresh rate in different ways. They are not like-for-like performance tests or a complete market comparison.
| Example | Resolution and panel | Published refresh rate | Other relevant details |
|---|---|---|---|
| LG UltraGear 48GQ900-B | 3840×2160, 48-inch OLED | 120 Hz; up to 138 Hz overclocked | HDMI 2.1 and VRR listed; LG says HDMI 2.1-capable graphics hardware is required for 120 Hz VRR. |
| PlayStation 27-inch Gaming Monitor | 2560×1440, IPS | Up to 240 Hz | VRR listed; compatible PS5 games can use up to 120 Hz, and compatible PC and Mac devices up to 240 Hz. |
The PlayStation monitor is a QHD IPS example, not a 4K OLED alternative. Together, these examples show why it matters to compare the resolution and refresh rate of the specific mode you want, rather than treating a larger Hz number as a universal upgrade.

If PS5 does not output 4K/120 Hz
Sony recommends checking the full signal path and console settings rather than assuming the monitor is at fault. Work through these checks:
Best Value
- Dual Mode Display Technology: 32-inch 4K (3840 x 2160) TrueBlack Glossy WOLED gaming monitor with versatile dual mode (4K@240Hz, FHD@480Hz)
- TrueBlack Glossy Panel: Exclusive new TrueBlack Glossy panel provides a zero-haze surface and exceptionally sharp imagery
- ASUS OLED Care Pro with Neo Proximity Sensor: Precisely detects when the user is away and switches to a black screen to reduce the risk of burn-in
- DisplayWidget Center Software: Allows users to easily access OLED Care Pro functions and adjust monitor settings using a mouse
- Professional Color Accuracy: VESA DisplayHDR 400 True Black compliance, 99% DCI-P3 gamut, true 10-bit color, and Delta E < 2 color difference for astonishing HDR performance for photo and video editing
- Confirm the display’s capability. Check that the monitor supports 4K/120 Hz, not just 4K or 120 Hz separately.
- Use the appropriate HDMI port. Check the monitor manual or specifications to identify the port that supports the intended mode.
- Check the cable. Sony identifies the cable supplied with the PS5 or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz as suitable checks. A new cable is not automatically necessary if the supplied one and your current connection work.
- Update firmware. Check for updates on the display and any intermediary equipment in the signal path.
- Connect directly if needed. Temporarily connect the PS5 to the display without an AV receiver or other intermediary device that could affect the signal.
- Review PS5 video settings. Check the console’s resolution and video transfer rate. Sony notes that changing the transfer rate can limit some output modes, so confirm the result after adjusting it.
