You do not need an external monitor to start. Touch and S Pen work, and a keyboard and mouse are optional. If you want a larger screen, check your exact tablet’s wired and wireless display support before connecting.
Start DeX on the tablet screen
- Save your work. Samsung warns that apps running when DeX opens or closes will be closed during the transition.
- Open Quick Settings. Swipe down from the top-right edge of the screen with two fingers.
- Tap DeX. The desktop-style interface loads on the tablet screen, with apps available in pop-up windows.
If the Quick Settings control is labeled Wireless DeX, touch and hold it, open Quick panel button, and choose Switch to desktop workspace. Button names and placement can differ by software version. See Samsung’s Galaxy tablet DeX instructions.

Use the newer Home-screen launch route only on eligible software
Samsung documents another way to open standalone DeX on Galaxy Tabs running Android 16 with One UI 8.0 or higher. Open an app, then swipe down on the horizontal header bar at the top center of its window to put it in pop-up view. You can then move or resize app windows to arrange multiple apps. This is a software-qualified route; if it is unavailable on your tablet, use the Quick Settings method instead.

You can operate DeX with the tablet’s touchscreen or an S Pen. For a more conventional desk setup, Samsung also lists a USB or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, or a compatible keyboard cover. These accessories are optional, and keyboard-cover fit depends on the exact tablet model.

- Touch or S Pen: useful when you want to work directly on the tablet without carrying extra accessories.
- Keyboard and mouse: useful for typing and pointer-based work; connection may be USB or Bluetooth.
- Keyboard cover: combines a physical keyboard with a tablet-focused setup, but check model compatibility before buying.
Not every touchpad gesture is supported: Samsung notes, for example, that two-finger pinch-to-zoom is unavailable.
Choose standalone DeX or an external display

The practical choice is between the portability of the tablet’s own screen and the larger viewing area of a compatible external display. Compatibility is model-specific, so do not assume a Galaxy Tab supports every connection method.

Connect to a TV or monitor wirelessly
- On the tablet, open Settings > Connected devices > Samsung DeX > Connect wirelessly.
- Select a compatible TV or smart monitor from the available devices.
- Approve the on-screen prompts to start the connection.
The menu or available wireless options can vary by tablet and software. Samsung’s DeX setup guidance describes the connection flow; check the support information for your own model if the option is missing.
Connect to a TV or monitor by cable
Connect the tablet to an HDMI display using a suitable DeX/HDMI cable or connection path, then follow the on-screen prompt. The required cable or adapter depends on the tablet and display. In particular, Samsung’s U.S. FAQ says that Galaxy Tab S9 FE, Tab S9 FE+, Tab S10 FE, Tab S10 FE+ and Tab S10 Lite do not support HDMI output. Other wired and wireless capabilities also depend on the exact model; consult Samsung’s current support information for your region before choosing a cable or display.

Before switching DeX on or off
- Save changes in open apps first: Samsung says apps running when DeX opens or closes will be closed.
- If a button or setting is missing, check the tablet’s software version and its model-specific Samsung support page; labels and available modes can vary.
- Do not treat DeX for PC as the default route for newer tablets. Samsung says DeX for PC is no longer supported on devices released with or updated to One UI 7 or later. See Samsung’s DeX support page.
