Windows 11 Pro can accept Remote Desktop connections, allowing you to operate that PC from another Windows, macOS, iPhone, iPad, or Android device. The accessed computer is the host; the device you use is the client. Only the host needs Windows Pro.
The basic workflow is to verify the host edition, enable Remote Desktop in Settings, record the host’s PC name, then enter that name in the appropriate client application and sign in with an authorized account.

Understand which computer needs Windows 11 Pro
Remote Desktop has two roles. The host is the computer you want to control. The client is the computer, phone, or tablet from which you connect. Microsoft states that the remote computer accepting the connection must run a Pro edition of Windows. A client can run another Windows edition or a supported operating system such as macOS, iOS, or Android.
That distinction matters because a Windows 11 Home laptop can connect to a Pro desktop; Home is not disqualifying when it is the client. The limitation applies to the host. If the computer you want to access is running Windows 11 Home, the documented Remote Desktop host setup will not apply until that edition is upgraded.

Microsoft’s current setup instructions are in How to use Remote Desktop. The labels below follow the Windows 11 interface described there.
Check the host before changing anything
Use the computer you intend to access as the host and confirm these items first:
- Edition: It must show a Pro edition of Windows. Do not assume that a machine marketed as “Windows 11” has the required edition.
- Physical identity: You need the PC name shown in Windows settings. The client uses that name to locate the host.
- Account access: After the connection is established, Windows asks you to sign in with the account used for access. Have those credentials available.
- Client application: Decide whether you will connect from a Windows PC, macOS or iOS device, or Android device, because the application and menu labels differ.
These checks separate an edition problem from a connection problem. If the host is Home, changing client apps will not make it accept the documented Remote Desktop connection.
What to have ready before enabling the feature
Remote Desktop is a host-and-client arrangement, so identify both devices before you begin. Sit at, or otherwise have access to, the Windows 11 computer that will remain available for remote use. You also need a second device with the client application appropriate to its operating system. The second device does not need to be another Pro computer.
Write down the host’s PC name exactly as Windows displays it, including capitalization or hyphens. Keep the account credentials you will use at hand. The name identifies the computer; the credentials establish the Windows sign-in after the client reaches it. Confusing either value can look like an application failure even though the host was configured correctly.
Do not start by installing a client app on every device you own. Choose the device you actually plan to use, then follow the matching route below. Microsoft documents separate names for Windows, Apple devices, and Android, and store listings or labels can change over time.
Verify the Windows 11 edition
Do this on the computer you want to control remotely, not on the device you will carry or use as the client.

- Open Settings from the Start menu or with the

- Scroll down and open About.
- Find Windows specifications, then read the value beside Edition.
The edition field is the authoritative check for this setup. If it says Windows 11 Pro, continue to the Remote Desktop setting. If it says Windows 11 Home, follow the upgrade branch later in this guide instead of trying to troubleshoot a connection that the host edition does not support.
Check the edition on the intended host even if the client also happens to run Windows 11. Two computers can have different editions, and the client edition does not determine whether the target can accept Remote Desktop.

Turn on Remote Desktop and record the PC name
Once the host is confirmed as Pro, enable the feature in Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Choose System.
- Select Remote Desktop.
- Turn on the Remote Desktop switch.
- Read the confirmation prompt and confirm that you want to enable the feature.
- Record the value shown under PC name. Copy it carefully, including its spelling and any hyphens.
The PC name is the identifier you enter on the client. Recording it at this point avoids guessing later, especially when several computers have similar names. Keep the name associated with this particular Pro host; entering the name of another device will not connect you to the computer on which you enabled Remote Desktop.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesEnabling the switch completes the documented host-side setup. The basic guide does not establish a complete procedure for exposing a PC safely to the public internet, configuring a router, or hardening an externally reachable service. Treat those as separate networking and security tasks rather than assuming the Windows toggle alone guarantees access from anywhere.
Connect from another Windows PC
Windows includes the classic client named Remote Desktop Connection. The connecting computer may be Windows Home or another Windows edition; the Pro requirement remains on the host.
- On the client Windows PC, open Start and search for Remote Desktop Connection.
- Open the application from the search results.
- In the Computer field, enter the host’s recorded PC name.
- Select Connect.
- When Windows requests credentials, sign in with the account authorized to use the host.
A successful session opens the host’s Windows desktop in the Remote Desktop window. You are controlling the Pro computer even though the client itself does not need Pro. If the name is rejected or the expected computer does not appear, stop and recheck the host name against the value under Settings > System > Remote Desktop, then verify that you enabled the feature on that same Pro machine.
Use the host name from the Remote Desktop settings rather than a nickname you created for the computer. If you manage multiple PCs, make a separate note for each host so that a saved client entry cannot be mistaken for another machine.
Connect from macOS, iPhone, or iPad
Microsoft’s current guide identifies Windows App as the client route for macOS and iOS. Application names and store availability can change, so use the current Microsoft-provided app listing on the device rather than relying on an old “Remote Desktop” label.
macOS
- Install or open Windows App on the Mac.
- Choose the option to add a PC or computer.
- Enter the Windows 11 Pro host’s PC name exactly as it appears in the host settings.
- Save the entry, select the newly added PC, and start the connection.
- Provide the requested Windows account credentials when prompted.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Windows App on the iPhone or iPad.
- Use the add-PC control to create a connection entry.
- Type the host PC name you recorded from Windows 11.
- Select the saved PC to initiate the session.
- Sign in with the account used for access on the host.
The Apple device is only the client. It does not change the host-edition rule, and entering the name of a Home computer will not turn that computer into a supported Remote Desktop host.
Connect from Android
For Android, Microsoft documents the Remote Desktop app as the client.

- Save the entry and select the PC.

If your installed app uses slightly different wording, look for the equivalent action to add a PC and then select the saved computer. The essential values remain the same: the host’s PC name and the account used to access it.

| Client device | Microsoft-documented route | Information to enter |

| macOS | Open Windows App and add a PC | Host PC name, then account credentials |
| iPhone or iPad | Open Windows App and add a PC | Host PC name, then account credentials |
| Android | Open the Remote Desktop app and add a PC | Host PC name, then account credentials |
Every row connects to the same kind of host: a Windows computer running a supported Pro edition with Remote Desktop enabled.
The choice among these routes is mainly about the device you already have. It does not create four different host configurations. Enable the feature once on the Pro computer, record its name, and use that same name in the client appropriate to each platform.
If the host says Windows 11 Home
A Home host fails the documented edition requirement. The issue is not the client device, the app, or the spelling of the PC name; the host edition itself lacks the Pro Remote Desktop host feature described by Microsoft.
Microsoft lists Remote Desktop among the features available in Windows Pro and recommends upgrading an activated Windows Home device through the Microsoft Store. Open the Windows activation or upgrade experience on the Home computer and follow Microsoft’s Store-based path to move to Pro. The exact price, promotion, and availability are not fixed here, so review the offer shown for your device and region before purchasing.

After the edition change is complete, return to Settings > System > About and confirm that Edition now shows Pro. Then use Settings > System > Remote Desktop to enable the feature and record the PC name. Do not describe an un-upgraded Home machine as a working Remote Desktop host.
Changing the client from Windows to macOS, iOS, or Android cannot substitute for this edition upgrade. The requirement belongs to the computer accepting the session, so resolve the host edition first and only then repeat the normal setup steps.
Troubleshoot the basic setup in the right order
The client cannot find the PC
Start with the two setup values that Microsoft explicitly places in the workflow:
- On the intended host, open Settings > System > About and verify that the edition is Pro.
- Open Settings > System > Remote Desktop and confirm that the feature is turned on.
- Compare the client entry character by character with the value shown under PC name on that host.
- Make sure you are using the same host whose name you recorded; a similarly named computer may be a different device.
These checks address the documented prerequisites. If they are correct but the client still cannot establish a session, the basic setup guide does not provide enough evidence to prescribe a router, firewall, or public-internet configuration. Avoid changing those systems blindly.

The sign-in prompt rejects the credentials
Remote Desktop requires a sign-in after the client connects. Re-enter the account used for access on the host and check for typing errors. If you are unsure which account should be used, identify the Windows account that is authorized on the Pro host rather than assuming that the client device’s local account is automatically valid.
A client account and a host account are not automatically interchangeable. The credential prompt belongs to the Windows computer being accessed, so use the account intended for that host and keep the PC name separate from the username or password.
You enabled Remote Desktop on the wrong computer
Remote Desktop is enabled per host. Return to the computer you actually intend to control, verify its edition, enable the feature there, and record that computer’s PC name. Reusing a name copied from another machine can send the client to the wrong target or produce a failed lookup.
You are trying to connect from outside the local environment
The documented setup establishes the Windows setting and the client applications, but it does not constitute a complete guide to remote access across the public internet. Internet access may require additional network design and security controls that are not specified here. Do not infer a router port-forwarding rule, firewall exception, or safety guarantee from the Remote Desktop switch alone. Treat external access as a separate topic requiring current, authoritative networking guidance.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Remote Desktop is not the same as Remote Assistance
Remote Desktop is intended for signing in to a Windows host through a client device using the host’s PC name and account credentials. It is different from Remote Assistance, which Microsoft describes as a way for a trusted helper to take over or help with a PC during an assistance session.
If someone contacts you unexpectedly and asks you to grant remote control, do not treat that request as a normal Remote Desktop setup step. Microsoft’s Remote Assistance guidance warns users to allow a helper only when they initiated contact directly with Microsoft Support. A support caller who pressures you to enable access is not proof that your PC has a problem.
Frequently asked questions
Does the client also need Windows 11 Pro?
No. The Pro requirement applies to the Windows computer accepting the connection. A Windows Home PC can be the client, and macOS, iOS, and Android devices are documented client options.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Where do I find the host PC name?
On the host, open Settings > System > Remote Desktop and read the value under PC name. Copy that value into the client application.
Best Value
Can I connect to a Windows 11 Home computer this way?
Not as the documented Remote Desktop host. Microsoft identifies Remote Desktop as a Pro feature. Upgrade the activated Home installation through the Microsoft Store, confirm the edition now says Pro, and then enable Remote Desktop.
Which app should I use on an iPhone?
Microsoft’s current guide identifies Windows App for iPhone and iPad. Add the PC by entering the Pro host’s PC name, select the saved entry, and sign in.
Do I need a separate Remote Desktop app on Windows?
Use the built-in application named Remote Desktop Connection. Search for it from Start, enter the host PC name, select Connect, and complete the sign-in prompt.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does turning on the switch guarantee access from anywhere?
No. The documented setup covers the Windows host setting and client applications, not a complete public-internet networking or security design. Do not assume that enabling the switch alone handles routers, firewalls, or external exposure.
Is Remote Desktop the right tool for an unexpected support caller?
No. Remote Desktop is a planned connection to your own host. Microsoft distinguishes Remote Assistance for helper sessions and cautions users to allow help only when they initiated contact directly with Microsoft Support.
A final setup checklist
- The computer being accessed is confirmed as Windows 11 Pro.
- Settings > System > Remote Desktop is turned on and the confirmation was accepted.
- The host’s PC name has been copied exactly.
- The client app matches the device: Remote Desktop Connection for Windows, Windows App for macOS or iOS, or Remote Desktop for Android.
- The client enters the host PC name and then signs in with the account used for access.
- A Home host is upgraded to Pro through the Microsoft Store path before attempting the documented host setup.
- Any public-internet or router requirement is handled separately with current networking and security guidance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which computer must run Windows 11 Pro?
The host—the computer accepting the Remote Desktop session—must run Windows Pro. The client may be Windows Home or another supported operating system.

Can I use a Mac, iPhone, iPad, or Android device?
Yes. Microsoft documents Windows App for macOS and iOS and the Remote Desktop app for Android. Each adds the same Pro host PC name before sign-in.
Why can’t I find the PC by name?
Verify that the intended host is Pro, Remote Desktop is enabled there, and the client entry matches the PC name character by character. Public-network troubleshooting requires separate guidance.
The Bottom Line
To use Remote Desktop in Windows 11, the computer you want to control must be Windows 11 Pro. On that host, check Settings > System > About, enable Settings > System > Remote Desktop, and copy the PC name. Connect with Remote Desktop Connection on Windows, Windows App on macOS or iOS, or the Remote Desktop app on Android, then sign in with the host account. A Home host must be upgraded through Microsoft’s Microsoft Store path; turning on the feature alone does not configure safe public-internet access.
