How to Use Reddit for Marketing Without Losing Community Trust

Reddit marketing works best when community rules and relevance come first. Learn how to contribute transparently, assess Reddit Pro, and plan paid campaigns.

Use Reddit for marketing by finding communities where your audience already discusses a relevant need, learning each community’s rules, and contributing transparently before sharing anything promotional. Reddit marketing can be organic, paid through Reddit Ads, or a mix of both—but neither Reddit Pro nor an ad campaign overrides subreddit rules or Reddit’s sitewide policies.

Start with communities, not a promotion plan

Look for subreddits where people are actively discussing the problem, interest, or category your business serves. A community’s subject alone does not mean its members want brand posts. Review its description, recent discussions, posting formats, and rules before participating.

Reddit’s sitewide rules apply across the platform, while moderators can set and enforce additional rules for their communities. Read both before posting, and if you cannot tell whether a post belongs, ask moderators politely rather than assuming it is welcome. See Reddit’s rules guidance.

Build organic participation around useful contributions

Listen and answer before sharing links

Join relevant conversations by answering questions, explaining useful details, or sharing resources that genuinely fit the discussion. When your role or business is relevant, disclose it plainly. A transparent, on-topic contribution is more appropriate than dropping the same link into multiple threads.

Follow the community’s promotion policy

Promotional content is not inherently spam under Reddit’s guidance, but that does not make it permissible in every subreddit. Some communities prohibit promotion; others use a 10% self-promotion guideline. Redditiquette also describes a 9:1 ratio as a commonly used rule of thumb. These are not platform-wide allowances: the specific subreddit’s rules and moderators determine what is acceptable. Reddit also considers repeated, unwanted, or unsolicited behavior spam whether it is automated or done manually. Read Reddit’s spam guidance and Reddiquette.

Avoid tactics that imitate community support

Do not use accounts to make a business recommendation look independent, send mass invitations, or repeat links across unrelated discussions. Reddit’s community-growth advice recommends relevant, thoughtful outreach and warns against mass community links and mass messages. Its concise guidance is: “Be polite, relevant, and thoughtful in your approach.” See Reddit’s community-growth guidance.

Use Reddit Pro as a business account option

Reddit Pro is distinct from Reddit Ads. It is a business-facing account and engagement option, not permission to bypass Reddit’s rules or a community’s posting requirements. The signup page says eligibility requires a Reddit account with a verified email and an SFW profile, plus business or organization details, a website, and a category; business size is optional. Reddit describes Pro as open to anyone who meets its eligibility requirements, but features and verification options can change. Check the current Reddit Pro page for availability and signup details.

Businesses should identify themselves accurately and respect the privacy of users who participate pseudonymously. Reddit confirms that Reddit Pro accounts remain subject to Reddit Rules; ordinary community rules still apply.

Choose between organic participation and paid promotion

Approach Best suited to What to plan for
Organic participation Building credibility through relevant discussion and useful contributions Community fit, local rules, transparency, and a sustainable pattern of participation
Promoted post Paying to distribute an eligible post through Reddit’s current promoted-post flow Eligibility, ad review, campaign settings, audience, placement, and CPC spend
Broader Reddit Ads campaign Campaigns that need a selected objective, audience, placements, and measurement approach Options vary by campaign and ad type; confirm what is available in the account

Paid reach can provide more control over distribution than organic posting, but it does not guarantee results or community approval. Reddit’s paid products have different capabilities; do not assume the rules for promoted posts apply to every campaign type.

Understand the promoted-post flow before using it

As described in Reddit’s current promoted-post flow, eligible users can promote their own eligible SFW text, image, video, or link post from a profile or eligible public community. Polls are not supported in this flow. Promoted posts are reviewed under Reddit Ads Policy, use a traffic campaign objective and CPC billing, default to maximizing clicks, use community targeting, appear in feeds, and support daily rather than lifetime budgets. If moderators remove the original post, the ad stops spending and the promoted post is removed. Confirm current eligibility and settings in your account before building a campaign. See Reddit’s promoted-post instructions.

Match targeting and placement to the campaign

Reddit’s broader advertising materials describe community, interest, keyword, location, and custom-audience targeting. Available choices depend on campaign and ad type. Community targeting can reach people who joined or recently engaged with selected communities. Keyword targeting can be behavioral in feeds or contextual in conversation placements, depending on setup. Review the campaign objective, audience signal, placement, and measurement options in the account rather than assuming every format offers the same controls. Reddit outlines its options in Reddit Ads materials.

Choice Audience signal or context Decision to make
Community targeting Membership or recent engagement with selected communities Are these communities relevant to the people the campaign is meant to reach?
Interest targeting Interest signals, subject to the campaign’s available options Is a broader interest group appropriate, or is community context more useful?
Keyword targeting Behavioral in feeds or contextual in conversation placement, depending on setup Does the keyword reflect a genuine need, and which placement is available?
Location or custom audiences Location or audience data, where supported Does the account offer the required option, and does it fit the campaign objective?

Feed and conversation placements are not interchangeable. Reddit says 43% of Redditors spend time in conversation threads, based on Reddit Insights powered by Community Intelligence, global, Q4 2025. Reddit also reports 83% higher brand awareness for campaigns that ran feed and conversation ads together versus feed alone, citing Reddit Internal, Reddit Brand Lift, 6/17–8/17; the cited page excerpt does not state the year. These are Reddit-published figures, not a forecast or guarantee for an individual advertiser. See Reddit’s Conversation Ads page.

Set measurement before spending

Choose what success means before launching: the campaign objective should determine which results you track. Reddit Ads materials describe reporting across post, consideration, and conversion metrics and reference additional measurement solutions. Decide which measures matter for the intended outcome, and verify the reporting available for the specific campaign type; a platform-level awareness statistic does not predict an individual campaign’s performance.

Treat giveaways as regulated promotions

Reddit defines promotions to include contests, sweepstakes, and lotteries. If you run one, you are responsible for applicable law and Reddit policy. Make official rules available, include the required participant release of Reddit from promotion-related liability, and clearly state that Reddit does not sponsor, endorse, or associate itself with the promotion. Do not target minors or support-related subreddits, make misleading claims, or use Reddit intellectual property without express authorization. Reddit prohibits lotteries involving purchase or similar consideration and random winner selection without explicit permission. Review Reddit’s User Agreement and obtain appropriate legal advice for the jurisdictions involved.
