How to Use Quick Share on a Chromebook and Transfer Files Safely

Quick Share moves files between nearby Chromebooks and Android devices. Learn Chromebook setup, visibility options, sending steps and safe receiving advice.

Quick Share lets you send files between a Chromebook and nearby Android devices without a cable. On a Chromebook, turn it on in Settings > Connected devices, choose who can find the Chromebook, then share from the Files app or accept an incoming request. For routine use, keep visibility limited and approve only transfers you expect.

What Quick Share does on a Chromebook

Quick Share is Google’s nearby-sharing feature for text, images, files and web pages. It works between supported Android and Chromebook devices, and selected Windows PCs can also use it through Google’s Windows app. Google’s Chromebook instructions list ChromeOS 91 or later and Android 6.0 or later for Chromebook-to-Android sharing. The feature was formerly called Nearby Share, so that name may still appear on some devices. Google Chromebook Help

The steps below are for Chromebooks. Android’s controls follow a similar pattern, but labels and menus can vary by device and software version, including on Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets.

Set up Quick Share and choose who can see your Chromebook

Quick Share is off by default on a Chromebook. During setup, you give the device a name and choose its visibility. Those choices affect which nearby devices can discover it.

HP 14" HD Chromebook Laptop for Students, Intel Quad-Core N4120(> N4020), 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC, WiFi, Webcam, HDMI, USB-A&C, 14 Hours Battery Life, Zoom, Chrome OS, CUE Accessories
  • Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
  1. Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
  2. Open Settings, then choose Connected devices.
  3. Next to Quick Share, select Set up.
  4. Name your Chromebook, choose a visibility setting, and confirm the setup.

Pick the narrowest visibility that suits the transfer:

Visibility Who can find the Chromebook What to know
Your devices Nearby devices signed in to the same Google Account. Useful for transfers between your own devices.
Contacts Nearby people in your contacts, while the Chromebook screen is on and unlocked. Provides more reach than Your devices without opening discovery to everyone.
Hidden The Chromebook is not generally discoverable. If someone tries to share, you must make the Chromebook visible when prompted.
Available to everyone Nearby devices can discover the Chromebook. This setting lasts up to 10 minutes; switch back to a more limited option when finished.

When the Chromebook is locked or its screen is off, it automatically uses Your devices visibility. Visibility controls discovery; they do not determine whether a file is safe to open.

Send a file from your Chromebook

  1. Open the Files app and locate the item you want to send.
  2. Right-click the file and choose Share > Quick Share.
  3. Select the intended nearby device, then select Share.

The receiving device normally shows a request that its user can accept or decline. Google documents an exception for a Chromebook and Android device signed in to the same Google Account: those transfers are automatically accepted, so an approval prompt may not appear. To send several files together, hold Ctrl while selecting them in Files, then use Share > Quick Share. Google Chromebook Help

Send a file from Android to your Chromebook

  1. On the Android device, select the file and choose Share or Send, then choose Quick Share.
  2. Select your Chromebook from the nearby-device list and continue through the on-screen prompt.
  3. On the Chromebook, accept the request if one appears.

The exact Android menu wording can differ by device and version. If the Chromebook does not appear, check its visibility setting and whether Quick Share is on.

Receive files safely

To receive from another person, make sure Bluetooth is on for both devices and keep the Chromebook screen unlocked. Google’s Android guidance specifies these conditions for receiving a transfer. Google Android Help

  • Use Your devices or Contacts for everyday discovery; select Available to everyone only when needed.
  • Read the incoming prompt: check who is sharing and what content is shown before accepting.
  • Decline requests you were not expecting, especially if you cannot identify the sender or verify why the file was sent.
  • Remember that a transfer from your own device on the same Google Account may be accepted automatically.

Quick Share’s Chromebook instructions explain visibility and transfer approval; they do not establish that files are scanned for malware or guaranteed safe. Treat a received file as you would any file from that sender: accept only when the transfer makes sense, and be cautious about opening unfamiliar content.

If you cannot see the other device

  • Confirm Quick Share is on and that the Chromebook’s visibility setting allows the other device to find it.
  • If receiving, turn on Bluetooth and unlock the Chromebook screen. The Android recipient may also need to enter Receive mode.
  • On the Chromebook, try turning Quick Share off and back on, or restart the device.
  • If the Chromebook is managed by work or school, an administrator may have restricted Quick Share. Ask the administrator if the setting is unavailable or transfers to a phone are blocked.

For general Chromebook file-management help, see Google’s guide to opening, saving and deleting files.
