To show a QR code during a YouTube live stream, add its image to a scene in an encoder such as OBS, position it in the video, then test the actual stream output with a phone before going live. YouTube’s encoder workflow supports custom visuals; the QR code itself is an image overlay, not a special YouTube feature.
Before you add a QR code
Choose the destination and the moment you want viewers to use it. The code should lead to the page or action described aloud or on screen; a short, stable URL is easier to recognize and update than an unexplained link. Keep the stream key private: it is a credential, not part of the QR code or overlay.

- Generate or export the QR graphic as an image file that your encoder can use.
- Check the destination by scanning the graphic before adding it to the production.
- Plan a clear area for the code, away from captions, faces, logos, and other overlays.
- Decide whether the code should remain in the replay or appear only during a particular call to action.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If the QR destination may no longer be appropriate later, plan to remove the overlay when the call to action ends or otherwise account for it in the replay.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAdd the QR code in OBS
- Prepare the YouTube encoder stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, set up an encoder stream and copy its server URL and stream key. Enter those in OBS using YouTube’s current connection instructions. Treat the key like a password; if it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room.
- Choose the scene. In OBS, select the scene that will be used for the live video, or create a separate scene for the segment that needs the QR code.
- Add the image source. In the Sources panel, select +, choose Image, name the source, and browse to the QR graphic. OBS’s Sources Guide explains that image sources can be added to a scene, ordered, repositioned, and resized.
- Position and size it. Place the code where it does not cover important video or text. Resize it with the on-screen handles or source transform controls, then inspect it at the size viewers will actually see. Locking the source after positioning is a useful precaution against accidental movement.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview. Start streaming from OBS. In Live Control Room, wait for the stream preview to appear, inspect the layout, then select Go live when ready.
The image must remain large and clear enough in the encoded video for a viewer to scan. There is no established YouTube QR-specific minimum size, placement, or exposure time, so do not treat any single layout as a guaranteed scan threshold.

Test the code in the real stream
Test more than the QR file or OBS canvas: encoding, playback size, and overlays can affect whether a code remains usable. YouTube recommends setting up encoder streams ahead of time and trying a test stream; OBS also recommends testing settings and running a short test stream.
- Run a short test stream, public or unlisted as appropriate, and inspect the output in Live Control Room.
- View the stream at a normal viewer quality and on the kinds of devices your audience is likely to use.
- Scan the code from the displayed stream, not just the original image. Confirm it opens the intended destination and that the code is not blocked or obscured.
- Check the spoken or written call to action against the QR destination. If the code is meant for one segment, verify that it disappears afterward.
Checking the scan from likely viewer devices is a practical production check, not a YouTube-published QR standard.
Account for stream format and audience settings
Vertical and horizontal streams
YouTube’s current comparison says vertical live streams may be discoverable in the Shorts feed, but clickable links in chat and the channel description are not available in the vertical live feed. That makes an on-screen QR code potentially useful there, but a phone-sized display leaves less room for it; test the code on a phone. For horizontal streams, YouTube says clickable links remain available in chat and the channel description. Do not assume link access is identical in both formats.
Rank #2
- Double-Sided: The stand stands vertically, and the content can be displayed on both sides. You can see your important content from multiple angles, which greatly enhances the display effect of your content.
- Thickened Material: Each double-sided sign stand has a 9mm thick base, which provides excellent support, so your stand can stand firmly on any flat surface.
- High Transparent Material: Our sign stands are made of beautiful transparent acrylic, similar to glass, with excellent display effects. Due to the high transparency, the product is fragile, so please be careful when using it.
- Triangular Groove Stable Design: The panel triangular structure fits perfectly with the base triangular groove and stands stably.
- Multiple Applications: Acrylic sign stands are suitable for restaurant menus, offices, weddings, promotions, exhibitions, receptions, hotels, bars, etc. They can display advertisements, menus, flyers and brochures on both sides.
Eligibility, restrictions, and made-for-kids settings
YouTube currently says a channel must be verified, have no live-stream restrictions during the previous 90 days, and the creator must be at least 16 to livestream. YouTube also notes that policy and copyright circumstances can disable livestreaming. Features can vary by account, region, audience setting, and policy, so check the current Live Control Room settings before the event.
A stream marked made for kids loses some features, including live chat. If your call to action depends on viewers following a chat link or using chat instructions, confirm those features are available for your stream; the QR overlay itself does not restore disabled features.
Which YouTube streaming method should you use?
YouTube documents mobile, webcam, encoder, and console live-streaming methods. The encoder route is the most suitable of these when you need to composite a custom QR image into the outgoing picture. The reviewed official guidance does not establish that every first-party mobile or console workflow supports a QR overlay.

- Classic Size: 4 x 6 inch. Dimensions: 4 x 6”(102mm X 153mm) , QR Code Signs.
- Premium Acrylic: transparent and super strong. The clear display stand vendor booth display items allows your signs to shine, grabbing customers' attention.
- Metal Stand: Easy to load in paper signs and stay sturdy. These versatile acrylic paper holder can be used in a variety of settings, making them ideal for any small business supplies.
- Slanted Back Support: To ensure that your pamphlet can maintain a certain Angle of tilt and not tip forward.
- Stable Base Extended: Allows your book to be more stable on the table.
- Encoder: Use when you need a custom scene, image overlay, or controlled placement. OBS is one option with an Image source.
- Mobile, webcam, or console: These may fit simpler broadcasts, but do not assume they provide the same custom image-overlay controls. Check the workflow and available features for the device or service you choose.
A QR image is a digital overlay; the cited workflow does not require buying a QR scanner, dedicated display, camera, microphone, capture card, or hardware encoder specifically to show the code.
Troubleshooting a QR code that will not scan
The code scans from the file but not from the live output
Check the encoded stream at normal playback quality. Increase the displayed code’s size, improve contrast, and avoid placing it over motion, text, or busy imagery. Then run another test from a phone viewing the stream.
The code is hidden or in the wrong place
Check the OBS source order and scene selection. Move the Image source above elements that cover it, reposition it, and verify that the correct scene is live. Lock the source after correcting its placement.
Rank #4
- Beech base: The base of the acrylic sign holder is made of beech wood, which is more stable, more fashionable, safer, and not broken.
- Double-sided slotting: The base is double-sided slotted, one side is vertical, one side is 15° slope, and the content can be viewed on both sides when displayed vertically; When displayed diagonally, it is easy for people to see the content from a high place.
- High Transparency Acrylic Board: The acrylic board is made of high quality and high transparency acrylic, because the transparency is similar to glass, please place it carefully when using it to avoid breaking.
- Easy to use: Just put the printed content into the acrylic board, install the silicone strip, insert it into the base and use.
- Versatile: Because beech signs are easy to display your content, they are widely used in cafes, restaurants, shops, offices, schools, parties, etc.
The code opens the wrong page or no longer works
Scan the source graphic again and inspect the destination URL. Replace the image if the target changed, then repeat the live-output test. Make sure the verbal or on-screen call to action describes the destination viewers will actually reach.
The stream preview does not appear
Check that OBS is using the correct YouTube server URL and stream key, and that streaming has started in OBS. Keep the key private; reset it in Live Control Room if it may have been exposed. Wait for the preview before selecting Go live.

Check whether the stream is vertical or marked made for kids, and review current account and feature restrictions. YouTube says vertical live-feed viewers do not have clickable chat or channel-description links there, and made-for-kids streams lose some features, including live chat.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the QR code is part of a prerecorded, looping YouTube broadcast, StreamNeo can keep uploaded videos live from the cloud: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
