To set up a custom RTMP destination, get the server URL and stream key from the platform you want to stream to, enter them in your encoder’s custom-destination fields, save, and confirm the platform is receiving your feed. Use the destination’s own endpoint and protocol: there is no universal server URL or setting that works everywhere.
What a custom RTMP destination is—and when to use one
A custom RTMP destination is a manual connection from streaming software, or an encoder, to a service that accepts a server URL and stream key. The destination provides those details; your encoder uses them to send the broadcast.

Before setting it up, check whether your platform is available as a built-in integration in your encoder or relay service. An account connection can be simpler than copying a key. Restream says major software commonly integrates with YouTube Live, Twitch, Facebook Live, X, and Kick, while custom RTMP is useful when the destination calls for manual endpoint details. Menus and available features vary by platform, software, and plan. A custom connection may also lack platform-specific features that depend on an API integration.

How to set up a custom RTMP channel
- Confirm the destination accepts encoder feeds. Look for streaming or encoder settings that provide a server URL and stream key. If the service has a native connection in your encoder, decide whether that is more convenient.
- Create or select the live destination. On the platform, open its live-stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key. Use the exact endpoint it gives you; do not reuse a URL from another service or guess one.
- Open your encoder’s stream settings. Choose the platform preset if one is available. Otherwise select Custom or Custom RTMP, then enter the destination’s URL in the server field and its key in the stream-key field.
- Save and start the broadcast. Check the destination’s preview or status page to confirm that it is receiving the feed before directing viewers there. Status labels and monitoring indicators differ by service.
- Protect the key. Treat it like a password: do not show it in screenshots, tutorials, shared documents, or public chats. If it is exposed, reset or regenerate it on the destination platform, then update the encoder. Restream explains what a stream key is and why it should be kept private.
How do I get my stream key?
Get the key from the live-stream settings of the destination you intend to use. On YouTube, the URL and key are in Live Control Room. YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default; if you want RTMPS, reveal and select the secure URL as described below. Keep the key confidential, and update your encoder if you reset it.
Can I use RTMPS instead of RTMP?
Yes, when both the destination and encoder support it. RTMPS is RTMP sent over a TLS/SSL connection. YouTube Help describes it as a secure extension to RTMP and provides a YouTube-specific setup path at its RTMPS streaming guide.

- Check that your encoder supports RTMPS and update it if needed. If it offers a YouTube RTMPS preset, select that preset.
- Otherwise, in YouTube Live Control Room, open the Stream tab or schedule a stream. In Stream settings, use the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS URL.
- Enter that RTMPS URL and your YouTube stream key in the encoder’s server and key fields, then save and verify the incoming feed in Live Control Room.
If YouTube reports an SSL error, its guidance is to check that both the protocol and server use rtmps. If the URL appears correct and the error persists, YouTube suggests specifying port 443. This is YouTube troubleshooting advice, not a universal port rule for other services.

Example: add a custom channel in Restream
Restream’s Help Center article dated March 10, 2026, documents this path: Channels > Add New > Custom RTMP. Enter the URL and key supplied by the destination, optionally name the channel, then select Add Channel. Restream says the same steps accept an RTMPS URL.

- Restream says a paid plan is required to stream on custom RTMP channels.
- Its API-dependent features, including Restream Chat and Analytics, do not work for custom channels.
- Change custom-channel titles on the end platform, not in Restream.
These details describe Restream’s documented workflow and may change; check its current custom-channel instructions before setup.
Encoder settings: use the destination’s requirements
Entering a custom URL and key does not make one set of video settings correct for every service. Follow the destination’s current requirements for resolution, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval. The setup information here does not establish universal values for those settings.

For one specific case, Restream’s April 22, 2026 OBS guide recommends CBR rate control, a two-second keyframe interval, Main profile, NV12 color format, and 709 color space for its documented OBS workflow. - The destination does not receive a feed: check that the URL and key came from the intended live destination, that neither has been mistyped, and that the encoder is using the correct destination preset or custom fields. Check the platform’s preview or status area after starting the broadcast.
- The encoder reports an SSL error with YouTube RTMPS: verify that the protocol and server use
rtmps. If the URL looks right but the error remains, YouTube suggests specifying port 443. - The key was shared or exposed: reset or regenerate it on the platform and replace the saved key in the encoder before streaming again.
- A relay’s chat or analytics tools are unavailable: check whether the custom channel bypasses API-dependent features. Restream says its Chat and Analytics do not work on custom RTMP channels.
- The stream title does not update in the relay: for a Restream custom channel, edit the title on the destination platform.
