Yes. One standalone Redis instance can serve several websites safely when every site uses its own key prefix, its own Redis ACL user, and a private network connection from trusted application hosts. Treat the instance as one shared capacity and failure domain: a memory or process problem can affect every site. Do not use numbered logical databases as the main boundary between unrelated websites. Redis documents those databases as shared persistence files and recommends them for separation inside one application, not for unrelated applications.

The architecture that works
A shared deployment has one Redis server (or one highly available Redis service) behind the application tier. Each website connects with a dedicated credential and writes only keys in its assigned namespace.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Namespace: every key begins with a site-specific prefix such as
site_a:orsite_b:. - Identity: each website has a separate Redis ACL user.
- Network boundary: Redis accepts connections only from the web and worker hosts that need it; browsers never connect directly.
- Capacity plan: memory, CPU, operations per second, latency, eviction, persistence, and recovery targets are sized for the combined workload.
- Migration path: all sites remain compatible with Redis Cluster by using database zero and prefixes rather than database numbers.
This arrangement is practical for sessions, caches, queues, rate limits, and other application data when the combined load fits the instance and the sites can tolerate a common outage domain. It is not equivalent to the isolation of independent Redis deployments.
Separate each website’s keys with prefixes
Key names are the first isolation layer. Assign a prefix to every website and make the prefix part of the shared client or framework configuration, not a convention that individual developers must remember.

Use a consistent key grammar
site_a:session:<id>
site_a:cache:<key>
site_a:queue:<name>
site_b:session:<id>
site_b:cache:<key>
Keep the site prefix followed by a colon, then a purpose, then the application-specific identifier. Consistent grammar makes reviews, incident investigation, and per-prefix usage monitoring possible. Put the prefix in a shared library, connection wrapper, or framework setting so new code does not hand-build unscoped keys.
Scope every data type
Give sessions, caches, queues, locks, counters, and rate-limit records distinct second-level prefixes. A cache invalidation routine should be able to target site_a:cache: without touching sessions or another site. Avoid generic names such as session:123 or config; they are easy to collide with when multiple applications evolve independently.
Remember that prefixes are not encryption
A prefix prevents accidental name collisions and, when enforced by ACL key patterns, prevents an application user from addressing another site’s keys. It does not create a separate process, memory pool, persistence file, or failure domain. A privileged administrator can still access all namespaces, and an instance-wide outage affects every website.
Create one ACL user per website
Redis ACLs can restrict both commands and key patterns. Give each website a separate user whose key pattern matches only that site’s prefix. Start with the smallest command set the framework needs; broad read/write categories are a starting point, not proof that every client will work.
Illustrative ACL rules
user site_a on >strong-secret ~site_a:* +@read +@write -FLUSHALL -FLUSHDB -CONFIG
user site_b on >strong-secret ~site_b:* +@read +@write -FLUSHALL -FLUSHDB -CONFIG
Replace the example secrets with unique, high-entropy credentials stored in your secret manager. The ~site_a:* and ~site_b:* patterns constrain key access; the command categories grant ordinary reads and writes while explicitly removing destructive administrative commands.
Validate commands before production
Frameworks may require commands outside the broad read and write categories. Transactions, scripting, streams, key expiry, pub/sub, or connection-management behavior can vary by client and feature. Exercise the complete test suite with the restricted user in staging, inspect denied-command errors, and add only the specific permissions required. Test ACL changes before applying them to a live site so a mistaken rule does not lock out an application.

Keep administrative access separate
Do not reuse a website’s ACL user for operations work. Maintain a tightly controlled administrator identity for maintenance, with access logged and limited to authorized operators. Website credentials should not be able to run FLUSHALL, FLUSHDB, or CONFIG; those commands can affect other tenants or the whole server.
Keep Redis on a private network
Redis’s security guidance describes Redis as a service for trusted clients inside trusted environments. Exposing TCP port 6379 to the public internet violates that model, even when authentication is enabled.
- Bind Redis to a private interface or loopback address appropriate to your topology.
- Firewall port 6379 so only the web and worker hosts (or their private network ranges) can reach it.
- Place TLS termination and network policy between untrusted networks and the Redis process when your deployment requires encrypted transport.
- Never put Redis connection details or credentials in browser code.
- Separate development, staging, and production instances or networks; do not let a test application reach production keys.
Application servers should make the Redis connection. A browser should call an application endpoint, and that application endpoint should perform the Redis operation after enforcing its own authorization rules.
Why numbered logical databases are not the main isolation plan
A standalone client can select a numbered logical database in its URL, for example redis://host:6379/2. The selected database is connection state, so a client must select it again after a reconnect. New connections start in database zero unless the client explicitly changes the selection.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThat feature is useful for separating internal components of one application, but it is a poor boundary for unrelated websites. Redis’s SELECT documentation notes that logical databases are persisted together in the same RDB or AOF files and should not be used to run multiple unrelated applications. A database number also does not give you an independent process, memory limit, persistence stream, or outage domain.
For multiple websites, keep all data in database zero and isolate it with prefixes plus ACL key patterns. This avoids reconnect surprises and keeps the design compatible with Redis Cluster, which supports database zero only and does not allow SELECT.

Connection configuration choices
Standalone deployment using a database number
If one application internally uses a logical database, configure the client with a URL path such as redis://host:6379/2 and verify that the client reapplies the selection after reconnects. Do not treat the number as a security boundary between websites.
Portable configuration for several websites
Use the same host and port, database zero, a site-specific ACL username and password, and a site-specific key prefix for every application. A conceptual configuration for site A is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitcheshost: private-redis.internal
port: 6379
database: 0
username: site_a
password: <site-a-secret>
key_prefix: site_a:
Site B changes only the username, password, and prefix. Keep the endpoint private and supply credentials through environment or secret-management facilities rather than source control.
Connection pools and reconnects
Use a pool per application or worker class with limits appropriate to the server. On reconnect, the client must restore authentication and any connection state it requires. Prefixing remains effective regardless of which pooled connection serves a request; relying on a connection’s currently selected database does not.
Set up the shared instance step by step
- Inventory each website. List every Redis feature in use—sessions, caches, queues, locks, counters, scripts, streams, or pub/sub—and estimate peak operations, memory, and latency requirements for each.
- Assign immutable prefixes. Choose short, unique names such as
site_a:andsite_b:. Document the grammar and make it a required client setting. - Configure database zero. Keep all websites in database zero if a future move to Cluster is possible. Use a numbered database only for an internal separation within one application.
- Create ACL users. Add one user per website, constrain its key pattern to that website’s prefix, and grant only the commands the framework needs. Explicitly remove destructive administrative commands.
- Test in staging. Run normal traffic, background jobs, expiration, retries, failover behavior, and deployment scripts with the restricted users. Confirm that site A cannot read, write, delete, or scan site B’s keys.
- Lock down networking. Bind or firewall Redis so only approved application hosts can connect. Verify that public scans cannot reach port 6379.
- Set capacity and eviction policy. Size for the sum of working sets and peak traffic, and decide what should happen when memory is exhausted. A cache-only site may tolerate eviction; session or queue data may not.
- Enable durability appropriate to the data. Choose RDB snapshots, AOF logging, or both according to recovery objectives, and include replicas when the workload requires failover.
- Instrument by prefix. Track memory, operations, latency, errors, and key growth for each website so one tenant’s behavior is visible before it consumes the shared budget.
- Document the blast radius. Record which sites share the instance, who owns ACLs, how to revoke a credential, and the recovery procedure for an instance-wide outage.
Capacity, eviction, and the shared failure domain
There is no authoritative universal number of websites that one Redis instance can host. The practical limit depends on combined memory, peak operations per second, latency targets, key-expiration patterns, persistence overhead, and recovery objectives. Measure the sum rather than counting domains.
Memory pressure
One application’s growth can trigger eviction or out-of-memory errors for all clients. Keep separate budgets for persistent data, cache data, replication buffers, and operational headroom. Choose an eviction policy deliberately: evicting cache entries may be acceptable, while evicting sessions, queue entries, or locks can break user-visible behavior.

CPU and latency contention
Redis executes commands through a shared process model, so expensive commands or sudden traffic from one site can increase latency for the others. Restrict administrative commands through ACLs, review scripts and bulk operations, and alert on latency as well as throughput.
Outages and maintenance
A process crash, host failure, persistence stall, or planned restart can interrupt every website on the instance. If that blast radius is unacceptable, place affected sites on separate deployments or use replication and managed high availability with a tested failover process. High availability improves recovery; it does not replace per-site key isolation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Persistence, replicas, and recovery
RDB snapshots
RDB creates point-in-time snapshots. It can provide a compact recovery image, but the amount of data written since the last snapshot determines the potential loss window. Schedule and test snapshots against the recovery point your applications require.
AOF logging
AOF records write operations for recovery. It can reduce the gap between persisted states, at the cost of additional write and storage work. Choose its synchronization behavior and rewrite schedule with the latency and durability requirements of the combined workload in mind.

Use replicas when failover or read scaling justifies the operational complexity. Redis documentation recommends enabling persistence on masters and replicas when replication is used. Test promotion, DNS or endpoint changes, client reconnects, and the behavior of queued or in-flight work; a replica is not a substitute for backups.
Restore testing
Restore snapshots or AOF data in an isolated environment and verify that every website can reconnect with its ACL user and find only its own prefix. A backup that has never been restored is not a demonstrated recovery plan.
Best Value
Shared instance versus separate Redis deployments
| Decision axis | One shared instance | Separate deployments |
|---|---|---|
| Isolation strength | Prefixes and ACL key patterns isolate normal application access, while the process and persistence layer remain shared. | Each deployment has its own process, persistence files, credentials, and configuration boundary. |
| Outage and eviction blast radius | A crash, memory event, persistence stall, or maintenance window can affect every website. | A failure is normally confined to the deployment that failed. |
| Operational cost | Fewer instances to patch, monitor, back up, and upgrade. | More deployments and operational work, but failures and maintenance can be scheduled independently. |
| Memory and CPU contention | Websites compete for the same capacity and latency budget. | Capacity can be allocated and tuned per website or group. |
| Cluster migration | Prefix-based keys in database zero provide a direct path to Cluster. | Each deployment can migrate independently, but every application still needs Cluster-compatible key design. |
| Per-application ACLs | One user and key pattern can be defined for each website on the shared server. | Each server can enforce its own users and policies, with less cross-tenant administrative coupling. |
Choose sharing when the sites have compatible recovery requirements and the team can monitor a combined capacity budget. Choose separate deployments when one site’s availability, compliance boundary, workload volatility, or maintenance schedule must not depend on the others.
Design now for Redis Cluster
Redis Cluster supports database zero only and disallows SELECT. A design based on database numbers therefore requires application changes before a Cluster migration. Prefixes and ACLs avoid that trap: the application already addresses keys by name and can remain in database zero.
Recommended Free Tools
Before migrating, verify that every client supports Cluster redirections and that multi-key operations obey Cluster’s key-slot rules. Prefixes alone do not guarantee that related keys land together; where an operation must be atomic across keys, use a client-supported hash-tag strategy deliberately and test it. Keep ACL key patterns aligned with the final key names.
Troubleshooting common failures
Site A receives a “permission denied” error
Check the command named in the error against site A’s ACL. The framework may need a command not covered by the initial categories. Add the narrowest required permission, test it in staging, and confirm that the key pattern still begins with site_a:.
Site A cannot find data after reconnecting
If the client was configured with a numbered database, it may have reconnected to database zero. Reapply the selection in connection setup, or move the application to database zero with a site prefix, which is the portable design for Cluster.
One website causes latency spikes for all others
Compare per-prefix traffic and memory growth with server-wide latency. Look for large commands, bursts, unbounded queues, or a growing working set. Reduce or isolate the offending workload, set application limits, and reassess whether the sites should share a capacity domain.
Keys from two sites collide
Inspect the code path that created the key and enforce prefixes in the shared client configuration. Rotate or delete only the affected namespace after confirming which data belongs to each site; never use a server-wide flush as a collision fix.
Redis is reachable from the internet
Immediately restrict firewall rules and binding to private interfaces, rotate credentials that may have been exposed, and review logs for unknown clients. Redis is intended for trusted clients behind an application layer, not direct public access.
Production checklist
- Every key begins with exactly one documented website prefix.
- Each website has its own ACL user, secret, and key-pattern restriction.
- Website users cannot run
FLUSHALL,FLUSHDB, orCONFIG. - Redis is reachable only from approved web or worker hosts on a private network.
- Applications use database zero when Cluster migration is a possibility.
- Combined memory, CPU, operations, latency, and eviction behavior are monitored by prefix.
- RDB, AOF, replication, or a deliberate combination matches documented recovery objectives.
- Backups, restores, failover, ACL rotation, and reconnect behavior have been tested.
- The team has recorded which websites share the failure domain and when to split them.
Bottom line
Use one Redis instance for multiple websites when you enforce isolation in the application’s key names and Redis ACLs, keep the server private, and size and monitor it as one shared system. Numbered databases are connection state inside one persistence domain, not tenant security. Prefixes plus per-site ACL users work in standalone Redis today and preserve a clean route to Redis Cluster tomorrow; separate deployments remain the right answer when a common outage or resource budget is unacceptable.
