For a dependable first server, use a fresh Ubuntu 24.04 LTS VPS with at least 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, and a 40–60 GB SSD, then expose ports 80, 443, and 8000, point your domain at the server, and run Coolify’s current official installer as root. The installation guide lists a smaller 2-core, 2 GB RAM, 10 GB disk floor for Coolify itself, but the troubleshooting documentation calls for 30 GB total disk and 20 GB free space; the larger figures are safer once Docker images, build caches, logs, and database volumes are present.

What Coolify does on your VPS
Coolify is open-source, self-hosted platform-as-a-service software. Instead of handing deployment to a hosted platform, you run the control panel and workloads on infrastructure you control. The dashboard can connect to Git repositories, build application images, route domains, request TLS certificates, and provision common databases.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Coolify uses Traefik as its reverse proxy for routing and SSL. Application builds commonly use Nixpacks, which detects a project’s language and build process, although you can also deploy workloads that provide their own Dockerfile or image. Your VPS remains responsible for compute, storage, networking, updates, backups, and security.
This arrangement is useful when you want one interface for several small sites and services, need control over data location, or want a self-hosted alternative to managed application platforms. It is not “serverless”: every build and running container consumes the VPS’s CPU, memory, disk, and network capacity.

Choose the VPS size before installing
Use the following figures as planning boundaries rather than guarantees. The 2-core, 2 GB RAM, 10 GB disk values come from the Coolify installation guide’s quick summary. Its troubleshooting documentation separately specifies at least 30 GB total disk and 20 GB available space. Third-party setup guides commonly repeat 2 vCPUs, 2 GB RAM, and about 30 GB disk as a floor, while recommending 4 GB RAM for multiple applications, simultaneous builds, Java projects, or databases.
| Resource | Smallest stated figure | Practical starting point | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU | 2 cores | 2 vCPUs for a few light services; add cores for concurrent builds | Builds can briefly use substantially more CPU than an idle application. |
| Memory | 2 GB RAM | 4 GB RAM for several apps, Java, large JavaScript builds, or databases | A 1 GB instance has been reported to fail during builds; running containers and Docker also need headroom. |
| Disk | 10 GB for Coolify itself in the install summary | 40–60 GB SSD for a first production server | Coolify’s troubleshooting guidance asks for 30 GB total and 20 GB free; images, caches, logs, and database volumes grow over time. |
| Architecture | ARM64 for Raspberry Pi OS installations | x86-64 or a documented ARM64 configuration | Image availability and build compatibility vary by architecture. |
The 40–60 GB recommendation is a conservative synthesis, not an official minimum. Choose more storage if you expect large Docker images, frequent rebuilds, artifact retention, or databases with meaningful data. Monitor free space from the beginning instead of waiting for a deployment to fail.
Use a clean server
Create a new VPS rather than installing over an existing hosting-control panel or a machine already serving unrelated websites. Existing reverse proxies, Docker installations, firewall rules, and occupied ports can conflict with Coolify’s services. Keep root or sudo-capable SSH access available for the installation and later maintenance.
Prepare the operating system
The official installation guide recommends an Ubuntu LTS release and gives Ubuntu 24.04 as an example. Non-LTS releases can behave differently; if the quick installer fails on such a system, the documented fallback is a manual installation path. Third-party guides mention Ubuntu 20.04, 22.04, and 24.04, but those older entries should not be treated as current support promises without checking the live documentation. Debian 12 appears in third-party material but is not confirmed by the official pages cited here.
- Create the VPS. Select Ubuntu 24.04 LTS where available, attach the planned SSD capacity, and record the public IPv4 address. If you choose another operating system, verify it against the current Coolify requirements first.
- Update the base system. Log in over SSH as root or a sudo-enabled user and apply the operating system’s security updates before running an application platform installer.
- Confirm resources. Check that the instance has at least 2 vCPUs, 2 GB RAM, and enough free disk for the practical target. Leave additional capacity if builds and databases will share the machine.
- Remove conflicts. Stop or uninstall services that already bind the web ports or manage Docker and reverse-proxy configuration. Do not place Coolify behind another panel unless you have a deliberate, documented architecture.
Set DNS, ports, and firewall rules
Use a domain you control. Create an A record for the dashboard or primary hostname that points to the VPS’s public IP. A wildcard record such as *.apps.example.com pointing to the same address lets Coolify route application subdomains without creating a DNS record for every deployment. DNS changes may take time to propagate according to the record’s TTL.
Allow inbound TCP traffic for ports 80 (HTTP), 443 (HTTPS), and 8000 (the Coolify dashboard). Some deployment guides also list 6001 and 6002 for particular services or realtime features; open those only when your current Coolify configuration requires them. Keep SSH restricted to trusted source addresses where your provider’s firewall supports that policy.

Coolify does not configure a firewall for you. Use the VPS provider’s network firewall, the operating system firewall, or both, and make sure the rules do not block certificate issuance or application traffic. Test that SSH still works before tightening access.
Install Coolify
Coolify’s official installation method is a single script intended to set up Docker, the reverse proxy, and required dependencies. The exact command can change, so copy it from the current Coolify installation guide rather than pasting an old command from a blog post.
- Open a root shell. Connect to the fresh server with SSH, or switch to a root shell with your distribution’s supported sudo method. The installer needs privileges to install packages, create services, and configure Docker.
- Run the current official installer. Obtain the command directly from Coolify’s documentation and execute it on the server. Read any prompts carefully; do not pipe an unverified script from an unknown source.
- Wait for service setup. The installer configures Docker and Coolify’s supporting services. Depending on bandwidth and disk speed, image downloads can take several minutes.
- Open the dashboard. Browse to the server’s IP address or the hostname you configured, using port 8000 if the dashboard is not yet behind a domain. Complete the initial account setup immediately.
- Verify health. Confirm that the dashboard loads, the server appears connected, and Docker is available before creating an application. If the installer stops at the Docker step, follow the official troubleshooting guidance and install Docker Engine 24 or later manually, then rerun or complete the documented setup.
Connected servers require Docker Engine 24 or later. Do not assume a distribution’s older Docker package meets that requirement; check the installed version and upgrade through the distribution or Docker’s supported repository when necessary.
Secure the first dashboard session
Use a unique, long password for the initial administrator account and store it in a password manager. Once the dashboard is reachable through your domain, enable HTTPS through Coolify’s proxy and certificate workflow. Avoid leaving the administrative interface broadly exposed while you are still testing firewall rules.
- Keep the operating system and Docker packages patched.
- Limit SSH to key-based authentication where practical, disable password login only after key access is verified, and avoid exposing SSH to the whole internet.
- Use separate credentials for Git providers, databases, and application secrets.
- Do not commit environment files, API keys, or database passwords to a repository.
- Record how to recover dashboard access and where encrypted backups are stored.
Connect a repository and deploy your first application
After the server is healthy, Coolify’s normal workflow is repository-driven. The labels can change between releases, but the sequence remains consistent.
- Add a Git provider or repository. In the dashboard, open the source or Git integration area, authorize access, and select the repository and branch you intend to deploy. Grant the narrowest repository permissions that support your workflow.
- Create an application resource. Choose the connected server, repository, branch, and destination. If the project has a standard framework layout, start with the automatic Nixpacks build; if it needs custom system packages or a nonstandard process, select a Dockerfile or prebuilt image.
- Set the build and run details. Confirm the build command, start command, exposed port, and working directory. The container’s listening port must match the port configured in Coolify; a process bound only to
localhostinside the container will not be reachable through the proxy, so bind web servers to the container’s network interface. - Add environment variables. Enter production configuration in the application’s environment section. Keep secrets out of Git and distinguish build-time variables from runtime variables when the framework supports that separation.
- Deploy. Start the deployment and watch the build log. Coolify builds an image, starts the container, attaches the proxy route, and reports the resulting status. The first build is often slower because base images and dependencies are not cached.
- Attach a domain. Add the hostname in the application’s domains section, ensure its DNS record points to the VPS, and let Traefik obtain the certificate. Test both the canonical hostname and the application’s health endpoint.
Nixpacks or Dockerfile?
Nixpacks is convenient for conventional Node.js, Python, PHP, Go, and similar projects because it detects a build plan from the repository. It is less predictable when a project needs operating-system packages, a specific runtime patch level, multiple processes, or unusual build steps. A Dockerfile makes those dependencies explicit and is usually easier to reproduce across servers, at the cost of maintaining the image definition yourself.

Do not run a database migration automatically on every container restart unless the migration tool is designed to be idempotent. A failed migration can prevent the new release from becoming healthy. Run one-off administrative commands through the deployment workflow or a controlled shell session, and take a database backup before destructive schema changes.
Add and operate databases
Coolify provides one-click database options from the dashboard. Common choices include PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MongoDB. Select a persistent volume and a backup destination before putting important data into production; a container restart without persistent storage can remove the database files.
Database setup checklist
- Create the database resource on the same server only when its memory and disk budget allow it; otherwise place it on a separate connected server.
- Set a strong administrative password and create an application-specific user with only the permissions it needs.
- Use the internal service name or private network connection for app-to-database traffic rather than exposing the database port publicly.
- Define a backup schedule, retention period, and off-server destination. A backup that remains on the same VPS does not protect against disk loss or account failure.
- Test restoring a backup to a separate environment before you depend on it for recovery.
Databases increase both steady-state RAM use and disk growth. The 4 GB RAM recommendation is aimed at scenarios with multiple applications, simultaneous builds, or a database; larger datasets and write-heavy workloads require capacity planning beyond that starting point.
Domains, HTTPS, and routing
Traefik watches the application routes configured in Coolify and forwards requests to the matching container. For each site, make sure the DNS record resolves to the VPS before requesting a certificate. A wildcard DNS record simplifies subdomains, but it does not automatically issue a wildcard certificate; certificate behavior depends on the provider and challenge method configured by the current Coolify release.
Serve applications over HTTPS and redirect plain HTTP where appropriate. If an application generates absolute URLs, set its trusted host and proxy settings so it recognizes the original HTTPS scheme. Otherwise, login callbacks, secure cookies, or redirect rules can fail even though the container itself is running.
Understand resource use and plan builds
A running container may be light, while a build can briefly consume most of the server. Compiling Java, bundling a large JavaScript project, or building several repositories at once can exhaust 2 GB of RAM even when the finished applications would run comfortably. Schedule heavy builds separately, add swap only as a safety margin rather than a substitute for RAM, and move build-heavy projects to a larger connected server when they delay production traffic.

Docker stores downloaded layers and build cache on disk. Old images, stopped containers, verbose logs, and database volumes accumulate even when application traffic is low. Establish a maintenance routine that reviews disk usage and removes only resources you can safely recreate. Never delete a database volume or an image still needed for rollback merely to reclaim space.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Backups, updates, and day-to-day operations
Back up what the VPS cannot recreate
Back up database contents, uploaded files, environment secrets, and any custom configuration. The Coolify dashboard and deployment definitions are useful, but they do not replace an export of the data your applications generate. Keep at least one copy outside the VPS account and document the restore order: infrastructure, Coolify, secrets, databases, then applications.
Update in controlled windows
Apply operating-system, Docker, and Coolify updates deliberately. Read the release notes for breaking changes, take fresh backups, and update a noncritical application first when possible. After an update, verify dashboard access, proxy routing, certificate renewal, scheduled jobs, and database connectivity.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Observe logs and health
Use application health checks that test a real dependency rather than returning a static success page. Inspect deployment logs for build failures and runtime logs for crashes, memory kills, failed migrations, and port-binding errors. Set alerts for disk space and repeated container restarts; these symptoms often appear before users report an outage.
Troubleshooting common failures
The installer fails while installing Docker
Check the operating system release and network access to package repositories. On a non-LTS Ubuntu release, switch to the documented manual method. Ensure Docker Engine 24 or later is installed, then follow Coolify’s current recovery steps rather than repeatedly running an incompatible script.
The dashboard does not open
- Confirm the VPS is powered on and that SSH still works.
- Verify port 8000 is allowed in both the provider firewall and the operating system firewall.
- Check that no existing service is occupying the port.
- Use the server’s IP address first; DNS and TLS issues can be diagnosed after local reachability is established.
A deployment builds successfully but shows an error
Check that the process listens on the configured port and on the container interface, not only on 127.0.0.1. Confirm required environment variables, working directory, start command, and database host names. A successful image build does not prove that the application can start with production configuration.
Best Value
The domain returns a proxy or certificate error
Resolve the A or wildcard record to the VPS’s current IP, verify ports 80 and 443, and remove conflicting proxy records at the DNS provider. If another web server is still bound to those ports, stop it or redesign the architecture. Certificate issuance cannot complete while the challenge traffic is blocked.
Builds run out of memory or disk
Read the build log for an out-of-memory termination, then check host memory and disk usage. Add RAM, reduce concurrent builds, or move the project to a larger server. Clear obsolete Docker cache and images carefully, and expand the disk before database volumes approach capacity.
The database disappeared after a redeploy
Inspect the database resource’s persistent volume mapping and confirm that the application is connecting to the intended database. Recreating a container is safe only when data lives on a persistent volume or an external database. Restore from the latest verified backup if the volume was deleted.
When one VPS is enough—and when to split workloads
A single 4 GB VPS can be a sensible starting point for a handful of low-traffic websites, an API, a worker, and a small database, provided builds are infrequent and storage is monitored. Keep production services together only when a failure of that one machine is an acceptable outage domain.
Move workloads to separate connected servers when one application needs independent scaling, when builds interfere with live traffic, when a database requires more memory or I/O, or when you need maintenance without taking every site offline. Coolify can manage multiple servers from one dashboard, but each server still needs its own compatible Docker installation, network access, and capacity.
Pre-launch checklist
- Fresh Ubuntu LTS VPS, preferably Ubuntu 24.04, with at least 2 vCPUs and a practical 4 GB RAM/40–60 GB SSD starting budget.
- Root or sudo SSH access verified.
- Docker Engine 24 or later available for connected servers.
- Ports 80, 443, and 8000 reachable; 6001 or 6002 opened only if your configuration needs them.
- Primary and wildcard DNS records resolving to the VPS.
- Firewall rules documented and SSH restricted appropriately.
- Coolify installed from the current official command and dashboard account secured.
- Repository, branch, build method, start command, port, and environment variables checked.
- Persistent database volumes, off-server backups, and restore tests in place.
- Disk, memory, restart, and certificate monitoring enabled.
Is Coolify a good fit?
Coolify is a strong fit when you want a self-hosted, Git-connected deployment experience and are comfortable operating a Linux server. It gives you a coherent workflow for applications, domains, TLS, and common databases without requiring a separate control panel for every project. The trade-off is operational responsibility: you must size the VPS for peak builds, maintain Docker and the operating system, secure the dashboard, and design backups yourself.
Start with the conservative hardware target, use a clean LTS server, and treat the 30 GB total/20 GB free disk guidance as a floor rather than a destination. Once the first application is stable, add services incrementally, monitor resource usage, and move independent or demanding workloads to additional servers instead of allowing one crowded VPS to become a single point of failure.
