To repeat a playlist in OBS, add VLC Video Source to a scene, add your media items, leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed order, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed, and the source’s visibility setting matters if playback should continue while you switch scenes.
One important distinction: OBS documents a playlist of media items, not guaranteed support for pasting a YouTube playlist webpage URL and having OBS expand it. For dependable looping, use media files you’re authorized to use. Direct YouTube playback through VLC or an intermediary can break when YouTube changes its delivery protocols.

What the OBS VLC Video Source does—and what it does not guarantee
OBS’s VLC Video Source plays a playlist of media items and can restart the list when it reaches the end. It is suited to repeating a finite sequence of files in an OBS scene.

OBS’s documentation describes adding media items; it does not establish that a YouTube playlist page URL will be expanded into all its videos by the source. The yt-dlp FAQ documents YouTube playlist processing and, separately, an example of streaming media to VLC, but that does not prove native OBS support for a YouTube playlist webpage URL: yt-dlp FAQ.

VideoLAN warns that changes in YouTube transmission protocols can make some files obsolete and VLC unable to stream them. This is a compatibility warning, not evidence that every YouTube URL currently fails: VideoLAN VLC Media Player FAQ. If uninterrupted playback matters, a local playlist of media you have permission to use avoids depending on YouTube URL extraction.
Set up a repeating playlist in OBS
- Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video Source to appear. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Add the source. In OBS, open the scene where the playlist should appear. In the Sources dock, click +, choose VLC Video Source, give it a name, and confirm. OBS explains source creation and scene placement in its Sources Guide.
- Build the playlist. In the source properties, add the intended media paths or URLs as playlist items and arrange them in the desired order. For a stable workflow, use local files rather than assuming a YouTube playlist page will resolve as a list.
- Set repeat and order. Turn Loop Playlist on so the source restarts after the listed media runs out. It is on by default in the documented settings. Keep Shuffle Playlist off if you want the listed order; shuffle is off by default.
- Choose what happens when the source is hidden. OBS’s documented default Visibility Behaviour stops playback when the source is not visible and restarts it when visible. If the installed version offers a continue-playing choice, select it when the playlist needs to keep running through scene changes.
- Size and test it. Use the preview bounding box or Edit Transform to position and size the source. Test the full sequence through its end and confirm it returns to the beginning before relying on it in a live stream. This is a recommended check, not a guarantee that every media item or network URL will play reliably.
Settings that affect playback
| Setting | What it controls | Documented default or practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Loop Playlist | Restarts the source after it runs out of media files. | On by default; leave on for continuous repetition. |
| Shuffle Playlist | Randomizes item order. | Off by default; keep off for a consistent sequence. |
| Visibility Behaviour | Controls playback when the source is hidden. | Stops when not visible and restarts when visible by default; choose a continue-playing option if available and needed. |
| Network caching | Buffers network media. | 400 ms by default in OBS’s documented settings. Increasing buffering may trade latency for resilience, but no quantified improvement for YouTube URLs is established. |
| Audio Track | Selects the audio track used by the source. | Track 1 by default. Check it if audio is missing or in the wrong language. |
| Subtitles | Enables subtitle display and selects a subtitle track. | Disabled by default; track 1 is selected if subtitles are enabled. |
Using YouTube links instead of local files
A URL that points to a YouTube video or playlist depends on more than OBS’s loop setting: VLC or another tool must successfully resolve and play the online media. OBS’s playlist documentation does not promise that a YouTube playlist webpage will be converted into a sequence of videos. yt-dlp’s separate playlist and VLC examples should not be mistaken for a built-in OBS feature.

- VLC for Kindle plays most local video and audio files, as well as network streams (including adaptive streaming), like the desktop version of VLC.
- VLC for Kindle has a media library for audio and video files, and allows to browse folders directly.
- VLC has support for multi-track audio and subtitles. It supports auto-rotation, aspect-ratio adjustments, hardware acceleration and gestures to control volume.
- It also includes a widget for audio control, supports audio headsets control, cover art and a complete audio media library.
VideoLAN’s compatibility warning means a setup that plays a YouTube URL today may need maintenance after YouTube changes its transmission protocols. If you choose an external extraction workflow, check that the tool is maintained and that your use complies with the rights in the content and applicable platform terms. The cited documentation does not establish a universal current fix or a one-click OBS configuration for YouTube playlist pages.
Troubleshooting
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, restart or recheck OBS, and confirm the architectures match—64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist stops at the end: Open the source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
- Items play in an unexpected order: Turn off Shuffle Playlist and review the playlist order.
- Playback stops after changing scenes: Review Visibility Behaviour. The documented default stops playback while the source is hidden.
- A YouTube URL has stopped working: YouTube transmission changes can affect VLC playback. Recheck VLC and any external extraction workflow for a currently maintained method; there is no universal fix established here.
- There is no sound or the wrong language plays: Check the source’s Audio Track selection; the documented default is track 1.
- The source is cropped, too small, or misplaced: Select it in the scene preview and adjust its bounding box, or use Edit Transform.
