One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchShort answer: YouTube documents how to reset a live stream key and replace it in your encoder, but it does not say that doing so during an active broadcast preserves uninterrupted playout or the same live session. If continuity matters, do not assume a mid-stream key change is seamless. Reset the key using YouTube’s documented workflow, and prepare and test encoder failover in advance for high-stakes events.
What YouTube documents—and what it does not
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Its documented workflow is to reset the key in Live Control Room, copy the new key, and update the encoder software. The setup guidance does not provide a hot-swap sequence for changing credentials while an encoder is sending an active stream, nor does it promise that an in-progress broadcast will continue without interruption. Accordingly, treat uninterrupted mid-broadcast rotation as unspecified—not as a supported or guaranteed procedure. Resetting a credential and failing over between encoders are separate operations; YouTube’s failover advice does not establish that changing a key during playout will preserve continuity.

YouTube’s documented steps apply to an encoder or mobile stream. A channel owner or manager must perform the reset; editors and viewers do not have permission.

- Open Live Control Room: Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Go Live.
- Open the Stream tab: In Live Control Room, select Stream and locate Stream key.
- Reset the key: Click Reset. Copy the newly generated key and handle it as a credential.
- Update the encoder: Replace the existing key in your encoder’s stream settings. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance also calls for entering YouTube’s stream URL there.
This is the documented credential-update workflow, not a promise that changing the key in an already-running encoder keeps an active broadcast uninterrupted. The available YouTube instructions do not specify what happens to current playout during a mid-session reset or key replacement.
If the key may be compromised
Resetting the key is the documented way to generate a replacement. Update the encoder with that new key, but do not rely on the reviewed instructions as assurance that the existing stream will continue while you change credentials. If the broadcast is live and cannot tolerate a break, the documentation leaves that exact scenario unresolved; plan the change around an acceptable interruption or obtain confirmation from YouTube for your setup.

Prepare and test backup encoder failover
For productions that need redundancy, YouTube recommends preparing a backup encoder and testing the handoff. Its suggested test is to stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet connection, then confirm that the player rolls over to the backup. See YouTube live streaming tips.
This is a continuity-preparation test for encoder redundancy, not a key-rotation method. YouTube’s guidance does not say that backup failover makes an active key reset interruption-free.

- Compact, feature-rich livestreaming USB audio mixer provides high-quality sound for desktop audio production
- Plug-and-play connectivity to computer or mobile device (no special drivers required)
- Loopback function makes it easy to mix mic and instrument inputs with background music, game sounds, or other audio input from a computer – and send the stereo mix back to the computer for streaming
- High-performance A/D converter with resolution up to 24-bit/192 kHz provides crystal-clear output for voice and instruments
- Equipped with a single mic input (XLR or ¼"), two LINE inputs for guitar and keyboard, and USB-C input for connecting to a computer
- Configure the backup encoder before the event and confirm it can send the intended stream.
- Run YouTube’s failover test in advance: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet, then verify that the player rolls over to the backup.
- Do not treat possession of a second encoder as proof of continuity; the failover needs configuration and testing.
YouTube identifies standalone hardware encoders as an option and recommends professional-grade hardware for higher-production events. Buying hardware is not required just to reset a key, and hardware alone does not ensure a successful handoff. YouTube live streaming tips
