OBS scene collections can keep each channel’s scenes and sources separate, but they do not select the YouTube destination or save stream-output settings. For that, pair each collection with the right OBS profile, which holds stream, video, and output settings. Before every start, verify both are active and that the stream key belongs to the intended YouTube channel.
What scene collections do—and what they do not
OBS Project describes a scene collection as a saved set of scenes and sources. Use a different collection for each channel’s visual setup: for example, its opening screen, main program layout, break screen, and end screen. Switching collections changes that scene-and-source arrangement; it does not, by itself, switch the YouTube channel or encoder settings.

Keep the distinction clear: a scene collection stores scenes and sources, while an OBS profile stores stream settings, video settings, and output settings. No. Use a profile for stream and output settings, including the destination configuration. A scene collection saves the scenes and sources, not those settings. Name the collection and profile for the same channel so they are easy to identify, then check both before going live.

Set up a separate collection and profile for each channel
- Create the channel’s scene collection. In OBS, open Scene Collection and choose New. Give it a clear channel-specific name. Build the scenes and sources that belong to that channel, such as its starting scene, main layout, break screen, and end screen.
- Check global audio sources. Scene collections also include Global Audio Sources configured under Settings → Audio. Review these sources when setting up each channel. A shared device or global source can make otherwise distinct layouts use the wrong audio input or output.
- Create or select the output profile. Open Profile and create or select a profile for the channel’s stream, video, and output configuration. Confirm the selected profile’s stream destination and encoder settings rather than assuming the collection changed them.
- Use consistent names. For example, pair “Channel A — Scenes” with “Channel A — Output.” Before starting, verify the active collection and active profile together.
- Export a backup before major changes or migration. OBS’s Scene Collection menu documents Export and Import, as well as Duplicate, Rename, and Remove. Import can bring in collections from OBS Studio and certain other broadcasting applications; check the OBS guide for supported formats and details.
Connect the profile to the intended YouTube channel
Configure the encoder destination using YouTube’s own channel stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s setup guide says to create or select a stream in YouTube Studio and enter its server URL and key in the encoder. Follow the current YouTube Studio flow in YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming; interface labels can change.
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream for the channel you intend to use.
- Copy that channel’s server URL and stream key into the appropriate stream settings in the active OBS profile.
- Check that the selected profile is configured for the intended channel before connecting OBS. A channel-specific scene collection alone does not do this.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube says stream keys are like the stream’s password and address. Only a channel owner or manager can reset a key; reset it if you believe it has been exposed. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction within the preceding 90 days to live stream. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming for current eligibility information before scheduling a launch.

Test the channel setup before relying on it
Test each channel’s full setup—not just its scenes—before leaving it unattended. OBS recommends testing settings, stream smoothness, and scenes before the first broadcast. YouTube advises previewing the feed, checking it through the channel or watch page, and monitoring audio and video quality. See the OBS streaming guide and YouTube Help: Live streaming tips.
- Confirm the intended collection and profile are active.
- Check that the correct channel’s stream key is configured and that the preview reaches the expected YouTube stream.
- Inspect both picture and sound, including any global audio sources.
- Watch for dropped frames, buffering, or a feed that stops during the test.
Plan upload capacity and understand 24/7 limits
YouTube says total outbound stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends keeping 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. If you operate more than one feed at once, budget for their combined outbound bitrates plus headroom; that is a practical application of YouTube’s total-bitrate guidance, not a separate YouTube threshold. Network interruptions can break a stream, so testing and monitoring matter even when the scene and profile are configured correctly.

A 24/7 broadcast also has an archive limitation to plan around: YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that one continuous 24-hour stream will produce a complete, single archive. If a complete archive matters, check current YouTube behavior and consider whether separate sessions or local recording suit your needs.
What OBS scene collections cannot guarantee for separate 24/7 feeds
Collections and profiles organize OBS settings; they do not themselves create separate simultaneous outputs or keep a stream alive after a computer, OBS process, or network connection fails. The official OBS and YouTube setup guidance cited above does not establish a supported architecture for running multiple independent feeds from one OBS process, nor does it document automatic recovery for unattended channels. The right design depends on your OBS version, operating system, number of concurrent feeds, available upload capacity, and recovery requirements. Do not treat switching collections as a multi-output or failover mechanism.

Troubleshooting common setup mistakes
The visuals are right, but the stream goes to the wrong channel
The collection only changes scenes and sources. Check the active profile and confirm its stream URL and key belong to the intended YouTube channel.

Review Global Audio Sources under Settings → Audio for each collection. A global source may be shared across setups.

The preview buffers or the stream drops
Check available upload bandwidth against the total outbound bitrate, keeping YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Test the network and monitor the feed; a network disruption can break the stream.
You cannot start a first broadcast
Check channel verification and whether a live-streaming restriction applies within the previous 90 days. Initial enablement may take up to 24 hours.
The stream key may have been exposed
Reset it in YouTube Studio if you are the channel owner or manager, then update the corresponding OBS profile with the new key.

You expected one complete recording of the whole day
The cited YouTube guidance covers automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; it does not promise a complete archive for a continuous 24-hour feed. Recheck current archive behavior and choose a recording or session plan accordingly.
