Test the feed as unlisted before going public. For a long broadcast, use a downloaded or mirrored copy so playback does not depend on continued Drive access.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube says first-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of the event. YouTube live streaming tips
- A computer with OBS Studio and the video file accessible locally or through Google Drive for desktop.
- A reliable outbound internet connection with enough upload capacity for the encoder settings you choose.
A normal YouTube Live broadcast needs an encoder: YouTube provides a server URL and stream key, and OBS sends the audio and video feed to YouTube. Treat the key like a password; anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your stream. YouTube encoder setup YouTube stream key guidance

Make the Google Drive video available to OBS
Download or mirror it for a long-running stream
For the most dependable setup, download the video or use Drive for desktop in mirror mode. Mirrored files are stored on the computer and in Drive and are available offline, but they use local disk space. Google Drive’s stream-files mode keeps files primarily in the cloud and depends on internet availability. For a broadcast that should survive a temporary connection or Drive issue, choosing a local copy is a practical reliability measure based on those behaviors. Google Drive for desktop: stream and mirror files
To download from Drive on the web, locate the file, open its context menu, and choose Download. If that option is unavailable, the owner may have disabled downloads for viewers or commenters. Ask the owner for access or a downloadable copy rather than trying to bypass the restriction. Download a file from Google Drive Share files from Google Drive

Check the media file
OBS Media Source supports common video formats, including MP4. If the file cannot be selected or does not play, first confirm it is available on the computer and check the container and codecs; Drive and OBS may support different sets. OBS Media Sources Google Drive video playback
Set up a one-video loop in OBS
- Open OBS and select the scene that will carry the stream, or create a new scene.
- In Sources, select + → Media Source. Name the source and choose OK.
- In the Media Source properties, select the video file. Enable Loop, then confirm the properties.
- Arrange and resize the source in the preview to fit the canvas. Check that its audio is not muted in OBS and that the intended audio level is audible.
- Play the source and watch it through the end once during testing. Confirm it starts again, and check both moving sections and quieter or louder audio passages.
The loop is created by OBS replaying the local media source; it is not a YouTube playlist or Premiere. OBS must remain running and continue sending the feed for the live stream to continue. OBS Media Sources

Loop a sequence of clips instead
For multiple files, add a VLC Video source, build its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. OBS requires VLC to be installed for this source. A single Media Source is simpler for one file; VLC Video adds the playlist capability and an extra software dependency. OBS Media Sources

- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Choose the YouTube service if available, then enter the stream key. If configuring a custom server, enter the server URL and key provided for that YouTube stream.
- Keep the key private. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the saved key in OBS before broadcasting again. YouTube stream key guidance
- Set the YouTube event visibility to Unlisted for rehearsal. Start streaming from OBS, then check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before making a public event live. YouTube offers public, private, and unlisted visibility. YouTube live streaming tips
Choose encoder settings and test the upload connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube transcodes incoming streams for different viewer formats. YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

| H.264 output | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended video bitrates in its encoder-settings table, accessed in 2026—not a universal bitrate for every resolution, frame rate, or codec. Select the row matching the output you actually configure. YouTube recommends about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; test outbound speed on the same computer and network that will broadcast. Network disruptions can interrupt a stream. YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions YouTube streaming tips
For ingestion protocol, YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. HLS is an alternative for certain codec and HDR workflows, but it has higher latency and more constrained setup; for this OBS file-loop workflow, RTMPS is the straightforward recommended choice. - Use motion and audio similar to the real program in your rehearsal.
- Confirm the preview appears in Live Control Room, stream health is acceptable, and the unlisted watch page opens for a viewer.
- If health is poor, lower the output resolution or bitrate, then test again rather than assuming the advertised connection speed is sustained upload capacity.
- Keep an eye on the feed after launch, especially through the first loop transition.
Copyright, reused material, and archive limits
Only stream video and audio you have the rights or permissions to broadcast. YouTube’s live-stream policies and copyright rules still apply to a prerecorded loop; repeating content does not make it exempt. Review YouTube’s guidance before broadcasting material you did not create or license. YouTube live streaming tips

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and can be accessed from the Live tab. Its cited help does not establish the same automatic-archive guarantee for a stream that runs 12 hours or longer. If an archive matters, plan for a stream under that limit or keep your own recording.
