How to Use OBS Replay Buffer for a Church’s Prerecorded YouTube Stream

Replay Buffer saves recent OBS output; it does not play a prerecorded service. Learn how to configure it, send a prepared program to a scheduled YouTube event, and test the full workflow.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OBS Replay Buffer and a prerecorded YouTube service solve different problems. Replay Buffer keeps recent OBS output so you can save a short clip after an important moment; it does not play or schedule the service. To broadcast the prerecorded program as a scheduled YouTube live event, send it from an OBS scene to the event in YouTube Studio. Set up and test both workflows separately.

What Replay Buffer does—and what it does not do

Replay Buffer continuously retains a recent segment of OBS output after you enable and start it. When you trigger Save Replay Buffer, OBS writes that retained segment to a file. It cannot save footage from before the buffer was started.

It is not the same as Start Recording, which captures a continuous recording from the time you start it, and it is not a playout control for a prerecorded service. Use Replay Buffer for short, retrospective clips; use ordinary recording when you need a complete local recording. OBS’s OBS Studio Overview Guide documents the buffer and its hotkeys.

Set up and test OBS Replay Buffer

  1. Choose the output settings. In OBS, open Settings → Output and enable Replay Buffer. Choose a replay duration and a recording path that the operator can find. There is no universally suitable duration: a longer window retains more recent output and places greater demands on system resources, so test it on the church’s actual computer.
  2. Assign a save hotkey. Open Settings → Hotkeys, find Save Replay Buffer, and assign a memorable combination that is unlikely to be pressed accidentally during the service. OBS also lists start and stop replay-buffer actions among its hotkeys.
  3. Start the buffer before the moment you may want. Use the Replay Buffer control in OBS before the relevant part of the service. Saving later cannot recover material that was not in the buffer. OBS documents --startreplaybuffer as a launch parameter for automatic startup; test it using the church’s actual OBS launch method before relying on it. See the OBS Launch Parameters page.
  4. Save and inspect a test clip. Trigger Save Replay Buffer, then check the chosen folder. Confirm the file exists and that its picture and audio are usable.
  5. Test the service feed separately. Replay Buffer does not replace the OBS scene or source that plays the prerecorded program. Rehearse that source and the YouTube event as a separate workflow.

A keyboard hotkey is enough; a physical programmable controller is optional. A community-authored OBS forum tutorial describes a Stream Deck example, but check any hardware and software workflow against the church’s setup rather than assuming compatibility.

Send a prerecorded service to a scheduled YouTube live event

This is the encoder-based scheduled-event workflow: OBS sends a live feed to a YouTube event while the content in that feed is prerecorded. YouTube’s encoder instructions do not establish one universal OBS media-source configuration for unattended playback, looping, or restart behavior, so rehearse the actual scene and source you plan to use.

  1. Confirm live access ahead of time. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. Check the channel well before the service; see YouTube’s Get started with live streaming help page.
  2. Schedule or select the event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and schedule an event or select the event already created for the service. Scheduling gives viewers an opportunity to find the event and receive reminders. Confirm that you selected the correct event.
  3. Prepare the OBS scene and source. Make the scene that contains the prerecorded program active. Confirm the source is visible and that its sound reaches the stream mix. Test how the file starts and ends, whether it needs a manual restart, and whether it loops as intended. Do not assume it will start or loop unattended without testing.
  4. Connect OBS to the selected event. Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key as private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to that event. Start streaming from OBS.
  5. Inspect the preview before going live. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview. Check the picture, sound, event title and date, privacy setting, and selected event. When the feed is ready, click Go live.
  6. End the event cleanly. When the service is over, end the event in the Live Control Room and stop OBS from sending the feed, following the controls shown in YouTube’s encoder workflow. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not treat that archive as a replacement for a separate local recording.

For the current scheduled encoder flow, see YouTube Help’s Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Check music and other content rights before streaming

YouTube states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If it identifies third-party content, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder; if the content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A licence does not necessarily prevent an interruption: YouTube says a rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. An archived live stream may also receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast ends. Before the service, confirm that the church has the necessary rights for music, video, and other third-party material in the program, and coordinate allowlisting with the rights owner when applicable. Read YouTube’s Copyright issues with live streams guidance.

Keep OBS settings and recordings manageable

Use profiles for settings, and scene collections for scenes

If the church maintains different rehearsal and service configurations, OBS Profiles can store most output settings and can be switched between. Profiles do not store Scenes; pair a profile with the appropriate Scene Collection. See OBS’s Profiles guide.

Use ordinary recording when you need the full service

Replay Buffer saves only the recent segment triggered by the operator. For a separate continuous recording, use Start Recording. OBS recommends MKV for ordinary recordings because an ungraceful stop will not corrupt the entire file, and documents a built-in remux process to MP4. That format guidance concerns ordinary recordings; it does not make a Replay Buffer clip a recovery copy of a failed live stream. See the Standard Recording Output Guide.

Troubleshoot common problems

Problem Likely cause What to check or do
No replay clip appears Replay Buffer was not enabled or started before the moment, or the save action was not triggered. Enable it under Settings → Output, start it before the relevant segment, then use the assigned Save Replay Buffer hotkey. Check the configured recording path.
The clip is shorter than expected The buffer had not been running for the full desired window when you saved. Start the buffer earlier and test the chosen duration. A save cannot include time from before the buffer started.
The replay save hotkey does nothing The hotkey may be unassigned, may conflict with another action, or Replay Buffer may not be running. Review Settings → Hotkeys, choose a non-conflicting key combination, start the buffer, and verify with a test clip.
YouTube does not show an incoming preview OBS may not be sending to the selected event, or its stream URL or key may not match that event. Confirm the selected event in YouTube Studio, recheck the event’s stream URL and key in OBS, start OBS streaming, and wait for the preview.
The preview has no picture or sound The wrong scene may be active, the program source may not be visible, or its audio may not reach the stream mix. Rehearse the actual scene and source. Check visibility and stream audio before clicking Go live.
The prerecorded program does not start, restart, or loop as expected Playback behavior depends on the OBS source and setup. Test the complete start-to-finish playback path in a rehearsal; determine whether an operator must start or restart the media source.
A stream is interrupted despite having a music licence YouTube may identify matching third-party content; the rights owner may need to allowlist the channel in Content ID. Confirm rights for all third-party material and coordinate allowlisting with the rights owner where applicable. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
The full recording is unusable after OBS stops unexpectedly The recording format may be vulnerable to an ungraceful stop. For future ordinary recordings, consider OBS’s recommended MKV format and use its built-in remux process if MP4 is needed. This does not recover a failed live stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a prerecorded program running on YouTube without leaving the church computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload the recording, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
