If YouTube Live is warning that your bitrate is too high—or your stream is dropping frames—lower the outgoing resolution and bitrate together, then test the stream over the actual Jio hotspot. A speed-test result is only a snapshot, not a guarantee that the connection can sustain that bitrate throughout a broadcast.
First identify what “bitrate too high” means
An encoder’s configured bitrate is the amount of data it tries to send; sustained upload capacity is what the hotspot can actually carry over time. A configured value that exceeds stable upload capacity can lead to dropped frames or an unstable stream. YouTube recommends choosing settings that are reliable for the available connection, testing upload speed, testing with representative content, and monitoring stream health during the event (YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance; YouTube’s streaming tips).

Do not treat a single speed test as a bitrate guarantee. Mobile upload performance can vary, so judge a setting by a real test stream from the same computer, phone connection, location, and approximate time you plan to broadcast.
Lower-resolution settings to try
For a first test, try H.264 at 480p and 30 fps with a 4 Mbps bitrate, or 360p at 30 fps with 4 Mbps. Those are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingestion rates for those resolutions, not a promise that a particular Jio connection can sustain them. If the test is still unstable, reduce the encoder’s bitrate further and test again.

| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 recommended bitrate | H.264 minimum listed by YouTube | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p, 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps | Try only if your hotspot test remains stable at this higher demand. |
| 720p, 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps | Use when smoother motion matters and the connection can sustain the test. |
| 480p, 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | A practical lower-resolution starting point; reduce bitrate if unstable. |
| 360p, 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | Try when 480p is not stable, then lower bitrate if needed. |
The “minimum” figures are entries in YouTube’s settings table, not recommended targets or measurements of Jio hotspot performance. YouTube also lists AV1/H.265 recommendations of 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 or 60 fps, and 3 Mbps for 480p30 and 360p30. Use the settings for the codec you actually select; do not assume a codec’s listed recommendation is what your connection can sustain (YouTube’s codec and bitrate table).
Reducing resolution lowers image detail; reducing frame rate can make motion less smooth. Lowering bitrate eases upload demand but can reduce image quality. If the link is marginal, change resolution or frame rate as well as bitrate rather than trying to preserve every detail at an unsustainable setting.

Set the encoder and run a realistic test
- Free the connection: stop other uploads and cloud backups on the streaming computer, and pause heavy data use on devices sharing the phone connection. This is a troubleshooting step, not a claim about Jio’s network behavior.
- Measure from the real setup: run an upload speed test using the computer connected to the hotspot, near the time and location of the broadcast. Repeat the test if results vary. YouTube specifically recommends testing upload bitrate, but a test result is not a sustained-capacity guarantee (YouTube Help).
- Lower output settings: choose H.264 at 480p30 and 4 Mbps as a test point, or try 360p30 at 4 Mbps. If the test stream remains unstable, lower the configured bitrate and repeat the test. If upload capacity is marginal, reduce resolution or frame rate too.
- Use stable encoding settings: for H.264, set constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and allows a maximum interval of four seconds. YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live video, with RTMP/RTMPS streaming (YouTube’s encoder settings).
- Test representative content: before the real broadcast, run a test with motion and audio similar to what you intend to stream. Watch YouTube’s stream health indicators during the test and the event; respond to warnings rather than relying only on the encoder’s configured number (YouTube’s live streaming tips).
YouTube’s Live Control Room uses the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate set in the encoder, then transcodes the stream into multiple output formats. Manual resolution selection is available with a custom stream key when manual settings are enabled (YouTube Help). Lowering your outgoing setting therefore does not prevent YouTube from producing other playback formats.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the hotspot remains unstable
Test the phone-to-computer connection
If the Wi-Fi connection between the phone and computer seems unstable, try Android USB tethering instead. You may need a compatible data cable. USB tethering can help test or bypass a weak local Wi-Fi link, but it cannot increase the cellular network’s available upload capacity (Android Help on tethering).

Separate a cellular limitation from an encoder problem
If the phone’s cellular upload capacity itself is weak or changing, lowering bitrate may help only up to a point. Test again at another time or location.
