To loop one study video on YouTube Live, add it to an OBS scene as a Media Source, enable Loop in its properties, then connect OBS to a YouTube stream using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Test the picture and audio before making the broadcast public.
What you need before you start
- OBS installed on the computer that will run the broadcast.
- A local video file you have the rights to stream. OBS documents formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube requires a verified channel without live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- A stable internet connection with upload capacity for the stream. YouTube recommends roughly 20% more upload bandwidth than the total outgoing bitrate; see its live streaming tips.
Set up a looping video in OBS
- Prepare the video. Keep the authorized file on the computer running OBS and note its location so you can select it. The Media Source plays local video and audio files.
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose a scene in the Scenes dock, or click the plus button to create one.
- Add a Media Source. In the Sources dock, click +, choose Media Source, give it a recognizable name and select the local video file. OBS layers sources in a scene: higher entries cover lower ones, so arrange any background or text around the video as needed. Details are in the OBS Sources Guide.
- Turn on the loop. Open the Media Source properties and check Loop. This restarts the file when playback reaches the end. The documented default is off, so confirm it is checked before broadcasting. The setting does not make a playlist from separate files; it repeats the selected file.
- Check the audio. Play the source and watch its level in the OBS audio mixer. Confirm that the study video is audible and that you have not also captured the same sound through another audio source, which can create doubled or echoing audio. OBS’s Quick Start Guide explains checking mixer meters and selecting audio devices.
- Check the scene output. Look at the OBS preview to make sure the video is visible and framed as intended. If you have multiple sources, use the Sources list to adjust their order; higher sources appear over lower ones.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a stream or select an existing encoder stream. Interface wording may change, so follow the current controls in Studio.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. In OBS, open Settings and select Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the connection details as directed by OBS and YouTube. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential that lets the encoder connect; keep it private. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Click Start Streaming in OBS. Check the Live Control Room preview and wait for YouTube to receive the encoder feed before starting the public broadcast from YouTube when prompted.
Test before an important or long broadcast
Use an unlisted or private test when appropriate. Confirm that the YouTube preview shows the intended video, the audio is present and clear, and the stream remains connected through a full playback cycle so you can verify that the file restarts. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream quality; OBS also recommends a short test before relying on the setup. Keep the connection’s upload capacity above the total outgoing bitrate, with YouTube’s roughly 20% headroom recommendation in mind. Once live, monitor both OBS and Live Control Room rather than assuming the loop is still broadcasting correctly.

Loop several study videos with a playlist
For a playlist, use OBS’s separate VLC Video source rather than creating one Media Source per file and expecting the single-file Loop setting to manage their order. OBS documents a Loop Playlist property for VLC Video, enabled by default in its property table. VLC must be installed for this source type to appear, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If you only need one file to repeat, Media Source is the simpler option. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules
Only stream videos and music you are authorized to broadcast. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content; it may replace the live feed with a placeholder, interrupt the stream or terminate it if detected content remains. For licensed third-party material, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist, so having a license alone may not prevent an interruption. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

YouTube’s livestream terms require providers to hold the necessary rights to broadcast content, including music rights, and to comply with applicable laws and Community Guidelines. An educational or “study” purpose does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast someone else’s video or background music. See YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.
Common problems and fixes
- The video stops at the end. Open the Media Source properties and check Loop; it is off by default.
- The Media Source option is missing or the file will not play. Confirm you are adding a Media Source and selecting a local file in a format listed in OBS’s documentation. For playlists, install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS (64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC).
- YouTube does not receive the OBS feed. Check that the stream URL and key in OBS match the stream selected in YouTube Studio. Treat the key as a credential; reset it in Studio if compromised. Also confirm that live streaming is enabled for the channel and that it meets YouTube’s eligibility requirements.
- The video appears but there is no sound, or sound is doubled. Check the Media Source and OBS mixer meters, confirm the intended audio device is selected, and avoid capturing the same audio both from the file and another source.
- The stream buffers, drops or looks unstable. Check OBS and YouTube’s stream status, then ensure your available upload bandwidth has headroom above the total outgoing bitrate. YouTube’s guidance suggests roughly 20% extra.
- The stream is interrupted for a copyright match. Review the detected content and your broadcast rights. If the material is licensed, contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting; a license may not stop an interruption on its own.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded study videos without leaving the OBS computer on, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed.
