How to Use Object Storage for Video Streaming

Object storage holds video origins, but reliable streaming also requires media preparation, CDN delivery, and careful testing of ranges, cache freshness, and upload paths.

Use object storage as the origin for your video files, prepare those files for playback, and deliver them to viewers through a content delivery network (CDN). A storage bucket alone is not a complete streaming system: on-demand video usually needs encoded segments and a manifest, while live delivery needs a pipeline that writes stream output as a CDN serves viewer requests.

What object storage does in a streaming setup

Object storage holds source videos and, when prepared for delivery, the manifests and media segments a player requests. It is the origin layer: when content is not already cached, a CDN can fetch it from the bucket and serve it to viewers. AWS documents this arrangement with Amazon S3 and CloudFront for on-demand video.

Object storage does not by itself encode a video, create adaptive renditions, or deliver cached content near viewers. Those jobs belong to a media-processing pipeline, a CDN, or a managed service that combines some of these functions. Google recommends routing customer traffic for both video on demand (VOD) and livestream distribution through a CDN. AWS: Host videos for on-demand viewing with S3 and CloudFront · Google Cloud: Media and entertainment workload guidance

Choose the right delivery path

Video on demand

For VOD, upload the source asset, encode and package it into the formats your player supports, store the resulting manifests and segments, and configure a CDN to use the bucket as its origin. The player requests the manifest and then the media segments through the CDN. Common adaptive-streaming formats documented by AWS include HLS, MPEG-DASH, Smooth Streaming, and CMAF. A plain MP4 stored in a bucket can be downloadable or playable in some contexts, but it is not the same thing as a packaged adaptive stream.

AWS’s S3 tutorial describes pairing S3 with CloudFront to host videos for on-demand viewing. If you use a different storage or CDN provider, verify its origin, caching, access-control, and byte-range requirements rather than assuming identical behavior. AWS: Formats and preparation for CloudFront distribution

Livestreaming

For live delivery, a transcoder or media pipeline writes stream outputs to storage while viewers retrieve them through a CDN. Google’s media-workload guidance describes livestream buckets receiving writes from transcoders and reads from a CDN at the same time. Place the bucket with the pipeline and audience in mind: the storage region, transcoding compute location, and viewers’ geography all affect the design.

Google recommends a lowest segment size of two seconds for livestreams, with a warning that shorter segments are more sensitive to long-tail write latency. That is Google’s provider-specific guidance, not a universal requirement; longer segments may help when viewers are far from the bucket. Google Cloud: Media and entertainment workload guidance

Implement a VOD workflow

  1. Upload the source asset. Store the original file in a bucket and decide whether it should be private, publicly readable, or accessible only through an authenticated delivery path. Keep source files distinct from output files so processing and cache rules can be managed deliberately.
  2. Encode and package for the player. Select formats and renditions that match player and device requirements. Produce the manifest and media segments for the chosen adaptive-streaming format; do not expect the bucket to generate them automatically.
  3. Store the packaged outputs. Keep manifests and their referenced segments at the paths expected by the player. Check that content types and access settings allow the CDN and player to retrieve the objects.
  4. Configure the CDN origin. Point the CDN at the bucket or the provider-supported origin endpoint, then set caching and access rules for manifests and media. For a documented AWS path, follow the S3 and CloudFront on-demand video tutorial.
  5. Test through the CDN, not only from the bucket. Load the manifest in the intended player, verify segment requests, test seeking, and confirm that access controls behave as intended for both authorized and unauthorized requests.

Validate seeking, ranges, and cache behavior

Seeking often requires byte-range requests so a player can retrieve part of an object instead of downloading it from the beginning. Check the selected CDN’s origin criteria and test the actual storage endpoint’s response. Where required, confirm that range responses include 206 Partial Content and an accurate Content-Range, object length, and validators such as ETag or Last-Modified.

Google Media CDN documents that objects larger than 1 MiB are fetched as byte-range requests of up to 2 MiB each. These are Media CDN-specific behaviors, not general object-storage limits. Cloudflare also notes that its origin range requests may be aligned differently from the client’s requested range. Test the CDN’s documented behavior with your player and origin rather than assuming the origin request will exactly mirror the viewer’s request. Google Cloud: Media CDN caching and range requests · Cloudflare: Cache behavior and range requests

Caching reduces repeated reads from the origin and can serve content closer to viewers, but it introduces freshness decisions. If an object changes at the same URL, cached copies may not immediately reflect the new version. Plan cache lifetimes and, where appropriate, use versioned object names or explicit cache invalidation according to your CDN’s supported approach.

Upload large video files reliably

For large assets, a resumable or parallel upload can be more reliable than a single request, particularly when connections may fail. Cloudflare’s R2 upload guidance recommends multipart uploads for large files or when parallelism or resumability matters, and identifies video as a use case. Its guide describes single uploads for files under approximately 100 MB, multipart uploads for larger files, and a maximum multipart object size of 5 TiB. These figures and recommendations apply to Cloudflare R2, not to object stores generally. Cloudflare R2: Upload objects

Cloudflare describes R2’s tiered read cache and says reads through a custom domain can use Cloudflare Cache and edge delivery. Its documentation also cautions that cached data may not immediately show the latest object version. Consider these behaviors alongside your cache-freshness requirements when deciding whether to use storage-provider caching or a separate CDN. Cloudflare R2: Architecture and data location

Pick an architecture by workload, not brand

Approach What it provides What you still need to evaluate
Object storage plus CDN Bucket-backed origin with cached delivery; AWS documents S3 with CloudFront for VOD. Encoding and packaging, player formats, access control, byte ranges, cache rules, geography, and operational integration.
Storage with provider caching Object storage with cache features close to the storage service; Cloudflare documents R2 tiered read caching and custom-domain access through Cloudflare Cache. Freshness behavior, range handling, geography, and whether the cache meets the workload’s delivery needs.
Managed video service Cloudflare positions Stream as handling video upload, encoding, and adaptive-bitrate delivery. Whether the integrated processing and delivery model fits the required workflow, controls, and costs; it is not equivalent to storage plus CDN alone.

The documentation available for these architectures does not establish a workload-independent provider winner or comparable playback, buffering, throughput, or cost benchmark. Compare your encoding responsibilities, audience geography, pipeline locations, CDN range support, caching needs, and whether you want integrated media processing or only storage and delivery. Cloudflare Stream · Google Cloud media workload guidance

Common problems and what to check

  • The video downloads instead of adapting to bandwidth: check that the asset was encoded and packaged into supported segments and a manifest; a source MP4 alone does not create adaptive streaming.
  • Seeking fails or starts slowly: inspect range responses and CDN requirements, including status code, Content-Range, object length, and validators where applicable.
  • Some viewers see an old version: review cache lifetime and invalidation behavior. Replacing an object does not guarantee every cached copy updates immediately.
  • Uploads fail or must restart after interruption: use the storage provider’s resumable or multipart upload path when supported and appropriate for file size and network conditions.
  • Live segments arrive late: examine transcoder write latency, segment duration, and distance between compute, bucket, and audience. Google’s two-second lowest-segment guidance explicitly accounts for long-tail write latency and should not be treated as universal.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, rather than building a general VOD platform or live media pipeline, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded-video streams to YouTube, not camera-based live capture. Start the free StreamNeo day.
