To prevent stripped screws, use the exact bit style and size that matches the recess, seat it fully and squarely, then drive at low speed with controlled pressure. On a Milwaukee drill/driver, select drive mode and start with a low clutch setting; on an impact driver, choose the gentlest suitable drive mode and use short trigger inputs. Stop as soon as the screw is seated. No bit or tool can guarantee strip-free driving, but this sequence removes the most common causes of damage.

Why screw heads strip

A screw strips when the driver bit loses reliable contact with the recess and rounds its edges. The usual causes are straightforward: an incorrect recess style, the wrong size, a worn bit, a bit held at an angle, too little downward pressure, excessive speed, or more torque than the screw and material require. A screw can also be damaged before you begin, so inspect both the fastener and the bit.

  • Incorrect profile: A Phillips bit will not properly drive a square, Torx, slotted or other recess.
  • Incorrect size: A bit that is too small rocks inside the recess; one that is too large may not seat fully.
  • Worn tip: Rounded or chipped edges cannot maintain the designed contact surfaces.
  • Misalignment: Tilting the driver concentrates force on one side of the recess.
  • Uncontrolled torque: High speed or a high torque setting can overdrive the screw after it contacts the material.
  • Material resistance: Thick or hard stock can demand more starting torque than the screw head can tolerate without a pilot hole.

The correction is not simply pressing harder. Stop when the bit slips, then reassess the fit, alignment, screw condition and tool setting.

Choose the bit that actually fits the screw

Identify the recess before touching the trigger

Look straight down at the screw head under good light. Match the visible pattern to the bit: Phillips cross, square drive, Torx star, slotted line or another profile. Milwaukee’s operator guidance says to use the proper style and size; a Phillips #2 bit is not a universal choice.

Screw recess Bit to select Fit check
Phillips Phillips bit in the specified number, such as PH2 when the screw is made for PH2 The bit should bottom in the recess with minimal side-to-side movement.
Square (Robertson) Square-drive bit in the screw’s specified size The square tip should sit fully in the recess rather than riding on its rim.
Torx Torx bit with the matching size designation All star-shaped lobes should engage; do not substitute a nearby size.
Slotted Slotted bit whose blade width and thickness fill the slot The blade should not wobble or bottom only at one edge.

Check the bit and screw for damage

Before driving, reject a bit with a rounded tip, chipped corners, visible twisting or heavy wear. Examine the screw recess for already-rounded edges, debris or paint that prevents full seating. A clean, undamaged bit cannot restore a recess that is already damaged, so replace the fastener when practical instead of repeatedly attacking it with a mismatched tip.

Consider length and access

Choose a bit long enough to reach the screw without the chuck, holder or driver nose hitting the workpiece. A longer bit is useful for recessed or obstructed fasteners, but it also magnifies any sideways movement. Use the shortest bit that gives you a straight approach and a clear view of the screw.

Use this controlled sequence

  1. Prepare the workpiece. Clamp or support it so it cannot move as the screw starts. Confirm that the screw length and type suit the material and joint.
  2. Fit the bit. Insert it fully into the drill chuck or 1/4-inch hex holder and tighten or lock it securely. Pull lightly on the bit to verify that it is retained.
  3. Seat the tip by hand. Place the bit in the screw recess before squeezing the trigger. Confirm that the profile and size feel solid rather than rocking.
  4. Align the driver. Keep the tool axis in line with the screw. A square approach lets the bit share force across the entire recess.
  5. Start gently. Use a low trigger speed and steady forward pressure. Let the bit cut or engage instead of stabbing at the head.
  6. Watch the first turns. If the bit cams out, stop immediately. Recheck the bit size, alignment, screw condition and tool setting; increasing force usually worsens the damage.
  7. Reduce input as the head nears the surface. Ease off the trigger when the screw is almost seated. The final fraction of a turn is where overdriving and head damage commonly occur.
  8. Stop at the intended depth. For a countersunk screw, stop when the head is flush or at the specified depth. For a pan or washer head, stop when it contacts the surface without crushing it.

Set up a Milwaukee drill/driver

Select drive mode, not drilling mode

Move the selector to the screw-driving or drive position. Drilling mode normally bypasses the adjustable clutch, allowing the tool to deliver more torque than a small screw or its recess can withstand. Check the icons on your model and confirm the selector is fully engaged before driving.

Start with a low clutch setting

Set the adjustable clutch near the lower end of its range, then test on a piece of scrap that matches the workpiece. Increase the setting only until the screw seats at the required depth. Milwaukee’s operator manual describes the clutch this way:

"The adjustable clutch, when properly adjusted, will slip at a preset torque to prevent driving screw too deep into different materials and to prevent damage to the screw or tool."

The clutch is a torque limit, not a substitute for a correctly fitted bit. It can slip before the screw is fully seated if the setting is too low, or allow overdriving if it is too high.

Milwaukee also cautions that its clutch-setting table is guidance rather than a guaranteed value:

"Because the settings shown in the table are only a guide, use a piece of scrap material to test the different clutch settings before driving screws into the workpiece."

Use the low speed range for screws

Choose the drill/driver’s lower mechanical speed for screw driving. Low speed gives you more time to sense engagement, keeps the bit from skating at startup and makes it easier to release the trigger as the head seats. Use brief trigger pulses when approaching the final depth rather than holding the trigger continuously.

Drill a pilot hole when resistance is high

For thick or hard material, make a pilot hole before driving, as Milwaukee’s driving guidance recommends. The pilot hole gives the screw a controlled path and reduces the starting force required from the bit. Select a pilot-hole size appropriate to the screw and material; the exact diameter depends on the fastener design and is not established by the cited Milwaukee guidance, so follow the screw manufacturer’s specification when one is available.

Use pressure, not body weight

Apply enough forward pressure to keep the bit seated, but do not lean the entire tool into the screw. Excessive pressure can bend the bit or tilt the driver, while too little pressure permits cam-out. Keep your wrist straight and your supporting hand behind the tool so the axis stays centered.

Use an impact driver without overdriving

An impact driver delivers rotational impacts and can generate substantial torque. The basic anti-stripping technique remains the same: correct bit, full seating, straight alignment, low initial input and a prompt stop. You do not need to buy an impact driver to apply these practices with a drill/driver.

Use controllable modes when available

Milwaukee’s M18 FUEL 1/4-inch Hex Impact Driver, model 2953-20, is listed with four drive-control modes. Milwaukee describes smooth acceleration and a self-tapping screw mode as intended to help prevent stripping small fasteners or driving them too far in relevant applications. Those are manufacturer-stated design intentions, not an independent guarantee or a universal performance ranking.

For a small or self-tapping fastener, select the lower or controlled mode available on your model. Begin with short trigger inputs, allow the fastener to bite, and release the trigger as soon as the head reaches the target depth. If your impact driver has no adjustable mode, compensate with shorter trigger pulses and a lower hand speed.

Keep impacts away from the final seating moment

Impact action can continue turning the screw after it appears seated. Watch the head rather than relying on sound, and stop before the screw compresses the surface or sinks below it. For delicate trim, thin sheet material or small screws, a clutch-equipped drill/driver may provide finer torque control.

Milwaukee bit choices and what they do—and do not—promise

SHOCKWAVE Impact Duty PH2 example

Milwaukee lists the SHOCKWAVE Impact Duty 2-inch PH2 Power Bit, model 48-32-4462, for use with drill drivers and impact drivers. Milwaukee says its customized tip geometry is intended to reduce stripping. That statement applies only when the fastener actually takes a PH2 tip, and it is a manufacturer description rather than an independently measured comparison with other bits.

Another correctly sized bit Profile and size chosen from the screw specification Any screw whose recess does not match PH2, or where a different length is needed Performance depends on fit, condition, alignment and technique; no universal winner is established.

Choose the bit by the screw first, then consider length and whether it is rated for the tool you are using. An impact-rated bit can be appropriate for an impact driver, but impact rating does not make an incorrectly sized bit safe to use.

Adapt the technique to the material

Soft material

Soft wood and similar materials can accept a screw quickly, so the main risk is overdriving. Use a lower clutch setting, low speed and a light final trigger pulse. Stop when the head is flush rather than trying to bury it for appearance.

Thick or hard material

Resistance rises as the screw enters dense material. Use a pilot hole and maintain a straight approach. If the clutch slips repeatedly before the screw reaches depth, do not immediately jump to maximum torque; verify the pilot hole, screw type and bit fit first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Metal and self-tapping fasteners

Start slowly so the point can establish its path. On an impact driver with a dedicated self-tapping mode, use that controlled setting as Milwaukee describes for model 2953-20. Keep trigger inputs brief and stop once the fastener has formed its thread and reached the intended seating point.

Troubleshoot slipping before the screw is ruined

Symptom Likely cause Corrective action
Bit jumps out immediately Wrong profile or size, incomplete seating, or an angled approach Stop, identify the recess again, replace the bit if needed, seat it fully and realign the tool.
Bit fits but slips under load Worn tip, damaged screw recess or insufficient forward pressure Inspect both parts, use an undamaged matching bit and maintain straight, steady contact.
Screw will not start in hard material No pilot hole or unsuitable screw for the material Make a correctly sized pilot hole and confirm the fastener specification.
Head sinks too far Clutch set too high, drilling mode selected, or excessive trigger time Switch to drive mode, lower the clutch, test on scrap and release the trigger earlier.
Clutch slips before the screw seats Clutch setting too low, high material resistance or inadequate pilot hole Verify the bit and pilot hole, then raise torque one step at a time while testing on scrap.
Impact driver keeps turning after seating Mode or trigger input is too aggressive Select a lower controlled mode if available and use short pulses while watching the head.

What to do when the recess is already damaged

Stop driving as soon as the recess begins to round. Continuing with the same mismatched or slipping bit removes more material and reduces the chance of a clean repair. If the project allows, replace the damaged screw with a new fastener of the correct type. For a screw that cannot be replaced, use a repair method and tool specifically suited to the damage rather than improvising with a larger bit; the Milwaukee guidance cited here does not specify an extraction procedure.

Bit and tool habits that prevent repeat failures

  • Keep commonly used profiles and sizes organized so you can compare a new bit with a worn one.
  • Replace bits when the tip no longer has crisp, symmetrical edges.
  • Clean debris from the screw recess before seating the bit.
  • Use a work light when the recess is shadowed or partially hidden.
  • Support the workpiece and your arms so the driver does not twist sideways at startup.
  • Test unfamiliar screw and material combinations on scrap before working on the finished surface.
  • Do not assume an impact-rated bit or a premium tool eliminates the need for alignment and torque control.

A quick decision guide

Use a drill/driver when

  • You need adjustable clutch slip to limit seating torque.
  • The fastener is small, the material is delicate or the finish depth must be precise.
  • You want a smooth low-speed approach with no impact pulses.

Use an impact driver when

  • You need a compact 1/4-inch hex tool for repeated driving or higher resistance.
  • Your model offers controllable modes that let you reduce input for small or self-tapping screws.
  • You can maintain a straight approach and are comfortable using short trigger inputs.

Whichever tool you choose, the bit must match the screw. Tool choice can change how torque is delivered, but it cannot compensate for a wrong or damaged bit.

Final checklist before every screw

  1. Is the recess style identified correctly?
  2. Does the bit size fill the recess without rocking?
  3. Are the bit and screw free of visible damage?
  4. Is the driver axis square to the workpiece?
  5. Is a pilot hole needed for this material?
  6. Is a drill/driver in drive mode with a tested clutch setting?
  7. Is an impact driver in a controlled mode with short trigger inputs?
  8. Can you see the head clearly enough to stop at the intended depth?

Bottom line

Strip prevention is a sequence, not a feature label: match the exact bit, inspect it, seat it squarely, control speed and torque, pilot-hole hard material and stop at the correct depth. Milwaukee’s clutch guidance supports testing settings on scrap, while its impact-driver mode descriptions show how controlled acceleration can help with small fasteners. Those features assist good technique; they do not replace it.
