Open Copilot from Start or the taskbar, or press the Copilot key or Windows+C on a supported keyboard. In Windows 11, Copilot can answer questions, help find certain local files, discuss a screenshot or shared screen, and guide you to relevant Windows Settings. It does not take over your PC: even during Vision screen sharing, it explains and advises rather than clicking, typing, or scrolling for you. Features vary by account, plan, rollout, and service capacity.
Open Copilot in Windows 11
On a new Windows 11 PC, the Copilot app should generally be available from Start or pinned to the taskbar. If you do not see it, Microsoft’s Windows Copilot getting-started guide points to installation instructions. The consumer Windows app experience described there uses a personal Microsoft account; signing in also provides chat history and other features.

- Open Start and search for Copilot, or select its taskbar icon.
- Alternatively, press the Copilot key on a keyboard that has one, or press Windows+C. Depending on configuration, the shortcut opens the full app or a smaller Quick View.
- To change what the shortcut opens, go to Account > Settings > Copilot Keyboard Shortcuts in the app.
On supported devices, a configurable pen shortcut button can also be set to perform the Copilot-key action. A Copilot-key keyboard is not required; the Windows shortcut and Start menu are alternatives.

Copilot in Windows supports chat features also available at Copilot.com, alongside Windows-specific tools. The interaction mode determines whether you provide text, speech, a still image, or live screen context.

Use Copilot for Windows tasks
Get directions to a setting
Describe the result you want rather than asking Copilot to make a change. Microsoft gives “Make my screen easier to read” as an example; you can also ask for help reducing distractions. Copilot guides you to the relevant Windows Settings option, where you review and apply the change yourself.
Find and ask about local files
Ask Copilot to find a named file, or search by file type or recency. Microsoft says Windows file search can find and open local files, including files synced from OneDrive on the device, and answer questions about them. Its support page lists DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, TXT, PDF, and JSON as readable formats. This is not a guarantee that every file, cloud-only item, or format will be indexed or understood. You can change access under Account > Settings > File Search and File Read.

Ask about a screenshot
- In the Copilot composer, select +.
- Choose Take a Screenshot, then select all or part of the screen.
- Type a question about the captured image and submit it.
This sends a still capture with your prompt. It is different from Vision, which uses a screen or app shared during a voice session.

When you open a link in Copilot on Windows, its content can appear in a side pane alongside the chat. If you grant permission, Copilot can use the context of tabs opened in that conversation to summarize them or answer follow-up questions. The described scope is those tabs in that conversation, not unrestricted access to all browser tabs.

Use dictation, voice chat, and “Hey Copilot”
Dictation turns speech into text; voice chat is a spoken back-and-forth. You can start voice from the Copilot prompt. In Quick View, press the Copilot key or Windows+C and select the voice-chat control. A microphone permission may be needed, and you can mute or end the session.
The optional Windows wake phrase is “Hey Copilot.” It must be switched on in Quick View settings; Microsoft says it responds when called after activation. Availability and voice capacity can vary, so the control may not be available to every user at every time.

Use Vision to discuss a shared screen
- Start a voice chat in Copilot.
- Select Share screen, then choose a screen or app.
- Check the outline around the shared content; Microsoft says you can share up to two apps at once.
- Ask questions aloud, then stop sharing from the floating toolbar when finished.
Vision is off by default and requires you to start a session and explicitly share content. On Windows, Microsoft says it works with apps generally, but cannot analyze harmful or DRM-protected material. It cannot read videos or animated GIFs, and quickly switching windows can lead it to answer using the wrong screen context.
For consumer Vision, Microsoft currently lists a Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium subscription requirement, with availability varying during rollout. This requirement is for Vision, not a general prerequisite for basic Copilot chat. Microsoft separately describes commercial-user access in Copilot web and mobile apps with Entra ID; that does not establish availability in the Windows consumer app.

Vision is an interpreter, not a remote-control feature. It can explain what is visible and suggest what to do next, but it does not click controls, type into apps, or scroll on your behalf. It only works during voice chats, uses available capacity, and counts toward daily voice usage.
Privacy, accuracy, and limits to keep in mind
Microsoft says Vision inputs—including images, audio, and shared page content—are not used to train models or personalize the experience. Session data may be retained for up to 47 hours to support feedback, then deleted if no feedback is submitted. A transcript is saved in chat history and can be deleted.
