Match the frame’s image size to the photo’s actual print dimensions, then choose whether you want the picture edge-to-edge or surrounded by a mat. A 5×7-inch print fits a 5×7 frame without a mat, or an 8×10 frame with a mat opening made for a 5×7 photo. For a larger portrait, an 8×10 print can make a stronger focal point—but check the crop before ordering.
Start with the print and the mat opening
Frame listings can refer to several different measurements. The advertised size usually describes the image the frame holds, not the frame’s outside dimensions. Before buying, confirm the print size, the frame’s image size, and—if you want a mat—the mat opening.

A mat opening is often slightly smaller than the print so its edges overlap and hold the photo in place. For example, Frame Destination lists an 8×10-inch frame with a 4.75×6.75-inch opening for a 5×7 print, and an 11×14-inch frame with a 7.75×9.75-inch opening for an 8×10 print. Check the individual product specifications rather than assuming every frame uses the same opening. Frame Destination’s sizing guide explains these nominal and opening measurements.

Choose a size for the display and viewing distance
A compact print can suit a desk or small shelf; a larger one may be easier to see as the main image on a mantel or larger display. Use the room and the photo itself as your guide, not as a rigid size rule.

Decide between an edge-to-edge fit and a mat
Use a same-size frame for a full, simple presentation
A 5×7 print in a 5×7 frame fills the image area without a mat. This keeps the focus on the photo and avoids adding a border around it.

Choose a larger frame and mat for visual space
A larger frame leaves room for a border around the picture. For a 5×7 print, an 8×10 frame with a 5×7 mat opening is one common pairing. The frame’s outside dimensions will be larger still, so check those too if it needs to fit a particular shelf or wall space.

Print sizes do not all have the same shape: the cited size guide gives 4×6 as a 3:2 ratio, 5×7 as 5:7, and 8×10 as 4:5. Changing the print size can therefore crop part of the original photo. Review the print preview before ordering, especially around faces, hands, and other details you want to keep.

Frapery’s guide recommends at least 300 DPI at the intended print size and suggests these pixel dimensions: 1,200×1,800 for 4×6, 1,500×2,100 for 5×7, and 2,400×3,000 for 8×10. These are the guide’s recommendations, not a guarantee of sharp results; focus, cropping, and viewing distance also affect how a print looks. If the image file is small or already soft, a smaller print may be the better choice.
When does an 8×10 print make sense?
An 8×10 can work as a larger focal portrait, particularly where there is space to display it. It has 80 square inches of print area, compared with 35 square inches for a 5×7 and 24 square inches for a 4×6, according to Frapery’s comparison, updated August 2, 2026. Those are calculated areas, not a measure of how well a particular photo will look at that size. Check that the file has enough detail and that the crop keeps the important parts of the image.

Use preservation materials for a photo you want to keep
For long-term preservation, do not assume that a ready-made frame’s included mat and backing are conservation-grade. The Florida Department of State, Division of Library and Information Services recommends a frame at least two inches larger on each side of the item to accommodate matting and gives a 12×14-inch frame for an 8×10 photograph as an example. It cautions that precut mats and backing sold with a frame are not suitable for preservation matting, and recommends a deep rabbet—the recessed depth inside the frame—to hold the glazing, mat, photograph, and backing layers.
