How to Use Loki for Storybook Screenshots on a Linux Server in India

Loki runs visual regression screenshots for Storybook stories, not arbitrary websites. Here’s how to set up its baseline and test workflow on Linux, choose an execution target, and assess a VPS against CI.

Loki can capture and compare Storybook component stories on a Linux server, including through its documented Chrome-in-Docker target. Install it in your Node project, make Storybook available separately, create reference images with yarn loki update, then run yarn loki test after changes and review the results. Loki is a visual-regression tool for Storybook—not a crawler for arbitrary public websites—and its documentation does not establish a particular low-cost Indian VPS price or minimum server size.

What Loki does—and what it does not

This guide refers to oblador/loki, the Storybook visual regression testing tool. It captures component stories and compares them with stored reference images so you can review visual changes. It is not Grafana Loki, the log aggregation system, and it is not a general-purpose service for taking screenshots of any live website.

Loki does not launch Storybook for you. Your Storybook server or static build must be available to Loki at test time. If your goal is scheduled screenshots of unrelated public pages, Loki is the wrong fit; use a website screenshot service instead.

Set up Loki in a Node project

The project’s getting-started guide specifies Node 16 or later. Its documentation may lag package releases, so confirm that your installed Loki, Storybook, Node, Chrome, and Docker versions work together before adopting this setup in a production pipeline.

  1. From the project directory, install Loki as a development dependency: yarn add loki --dev.
  2. Initialize its configuration: yarn loki init.
  3. Start Storybook separately, using the command and port configured by your project. Keep it running and reachable from the environment where Loki will execute.

The official getting-started guide, last updated August 27, 2024, describes the installation and baseline workflow at the Loki project documentation. Verify the installed package’s actual options and output paths rather than assuming older guide details exactly match your version.

Run the baseline-and-comparison workflow

Create reference images

With Storybook available, run:

yarn loki update

This creates the reference screenshots against which later runs are compared. Commit approved reference images with the code so teammates and CI use the same baseline.

Capture and inspect later changes

After editing components or stories, run:

yarn loki test

Review the captured images and any differences. A test failure can indicate an unintended visual regression, but it can also reflect an intentional design change or a capture environment difference. Approve changed references only after inspecting them; then commit the updated references with the related code change.

Loki documentation describes output locations somewhat differently across pages: the CLI reference names ./.loki/reference, ./.loki/current, and ./.loki/difference as defaults, while the getting-started guide refers to loki/current and loki/difference. Check the paths printed by your installed version and its configuration.

Choose how Chrome runs on Linux

The project recommends Chrome in Docker and also documents local Chrome and AWS Lambda targets. For a Linux server or VPS, Docker is the most directly documented route. Loki’s configuration guide exposes chrome.docker and chrome.aws-lambda targets, as well as viewport dimensions and presets.

  • Chrome in Docker: a natural choice when you want the browser environment isolated from the host, but Docker must be installed and usable by the account running the tests.
  • Local Chrome: avoids the Docker target but requires a compatible Chrome installation and dependencies on the server.
  • AWS Lambda: documented as another execution target; check current compatibility and configuration for your Loki release before selecting it.

The documentation lists a Docker image default and a Chrome concurrency default of four. These are configuration defaults, not proof that every small VPS can run that workload reliably. If the host runs short on CPU or memory, reduce concurrency and test the suite on the actual machine. The cited project material does not provide a minimum RAM or CPU recommendation.

Is a low-cost server in India the cheapest option?

The available Loki documentation does not specify an Indian provider, current VPS price, required resource size, bandwidth needs, or measured performance. There is no evidence-based universal answer to whether a low-cost Indian server will be sufficient or cheaper than another setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before choosing a host, check its current price and region, CPU and memory limits, storage and bandwidth terms, Docker support, and whether its limits fit your Storybook workload. Run your own suite under the intended concurrency and capture settings. Include the time spent maintaining the server in your cost decision, not just the advertised monthly charge.

If tests run only occasionally, compare a VPS you would otherwise leave idle with the project’s CI workflow. The sources do not establish that CI or a VPS costs less in India; the answer depends on your run frequency and the current terms of your chosen providers.

Run Loki in CI instead of keeping a host available

Loki’s CI guide documents building a static Storybook and running Loki with --requireReference. This lets a pipeline compare against committed reference images without relying on a permanently running Storybook server. Follow the current CI guide for the build and serve commands appropriate to your project, and ensure the runner can access the static Storybook output.

A dedicated server gives you control over its environment but requires provisioning, updates, and maintenance. CI avoids maintaining an always-available host, but requires pipeline configuration and is subject to the CI provider’s current usage and pricing terms. Neither route is established as the cheaper choice without a workload and provider-specific cost estimate.

Common problems and fixes

  • Loki cannot connect to Storybook: Start Storybook before invoking Loki, and verify the address and port Loki is configured to use. Loki does not start the server itself.
  • Docker target fails on the VPS: Check that Docker is installed, the test account has permission to use it, and the host can obtain and run the configured browser image. Review the error output and your installed Loki configuration.
  • Runs become slow or unstable under load: Lower Chrome concurrency and rerun on the same host. The documented default of four is not a sizing guarantee.
  • Unexpected screenshot differences: Inspect the current and difference images before updating references. Confirm the same Storybook build, viewport, browser target, and relevant configuration are used between runs.
  • Reference or output directory is unclear: Check the installed CLI output and configuration. Loki’s own guide and CLI reference describe paths with a leading dot inconsistently.
  • Setup instructions do not match your versions: The getting-started page was last updated August 27, 2024, and the npm listing surfaced version 0.35.1 as published two years before its crawl. Verify current package maintenance and compatibility rather than assuming those signals describe today’s latest release.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots of arbitrary web pages rather than Storybook regression tests, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF; its API accepts many parameter names used by other screenshot APIs. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses report the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients.

The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots, with all features on every plan. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
