On Galaxy phones running One UI 4 or later, Samsung says the original Live Focus experience was incorporated into Portrait mode; older phones may still display Live Focus. The available modes, effects and controls vary by model and software, so use the labels shown in your own Camera app. Samsung’s Portrait mode instructions explain the newer workflow.
What Live Focus does—and where it went
Live Focus separates a person or other subject visually from the background by blurring the area behind it. On newer Galaxy software, look for Portrait rather than assuming the feature has disappeared. The older Live Focus name may remain on legacy devices.

Portrait effects on supported phones can include Blur, Studio, High-key mono, Low-key mono, Backdrop and Color point. Not every Galaxy model offers every effect. Samsung’s guidance also describes a separate set for video: Blur, Big circle, Color point and Glitch. Samsung’s Portrait and Portrait Video guide describes these options, but availability depends on the device and mode.

- Open Camera and select Portrait. It may appear among the main camera tabs or in the mode list, depending on the phone.
- Tap the effect control in the viewfinder and choose one of the effects offered.
- Use the on-screen slider to adjust the effect strength, then compose and take the picture.
- If your phone still has a Live Focus mode, select it and use its available blur or effect controls instead.
These are common routes, not a guaranteed set of menu labels. Samsung notes that Portrait and related modes are not available on every model. Check Samsung’s instructions alongside the options on your phone.

Record portrait-style video
- Open Camera and tap More.
- Choose Portrait Video or, on some models or software versions, Live Focus Video.
- Select an available effect and adjust its strength with the slider.
- Start recording.
The mode name and effect choices vary by phone, and not all Galaxy devices support portrait-style video. Samsung’s Portrait Video instructions cover the newer and older naming.
What older Live Focus controls look like
Samsung’s Galaxy S9/S9+ instructions provide a legacy example: open Camera, tap Live Focus, adjust background blur, and capture the photo. To change the effect afterward, open the image in Gallery and use Adjust Background Blur. This is a model-specific example, not a universal menu path for current Galaxy phones. Samsung’s S9/S9+ instructions describe that workflow.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).

For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Improve the chance of a clean background blur
- Give the camera enough light. Samsung recommends sufficient light for the effect to work well. Its S9/S9+ guidance and Portrait guidance both discuss lighting.
- Try some space between subject and background. For the Galaxy S9/S9+, Samsung recommends placing the subject about 1–1.5 m from the lens. Samsung UK gives similar general camera-mode guidance; treat this as practical advice, not a fixed requirement for every modern Galaxy camera. S9/S9+ guidance · Samsung UK camera-mode guidance
- Keep the phone and subject still. Samsung warns that movement by the device or subject can prevent background blur from being applied properly.
- Watch for difficult edges. Thin or transparent subjects, similar colors or patterns between subject and background, and very plain subjects or backgrounds can make separation less reliable. Samsung’s Portrait guidance lists these limitations.
If you cannot find Live Focus
- Open Camera and look for Portrait among the main modes.
- Tap More or open the mode list to check for Portrait or a legacy Live Focus option.
- If neither appears, consult the manual or support page for your exact Galaxy model and software. Samsung’s support materials do not establish a complete compatibility list for every model, region, carrier or software build.
Samsung says the Live Focus experience moved into Portrait on phones with One UI 4 and later. A missing Live Focus label may therefore reflect the newer naming rather than a removed portrait effect; the Camera app on the specific phone is the practical check. Sometimes. Samsung documents post-capture blur adjustment for older Live Focus images and for some Portrait photos, but the control depends on the phone, shooting mode and image. Open the photo in Gallery or its editing flow and look for a background-blur adjustment; if it is not offered, that image or device may not support it. Samsung’s S9/S9+ instructions and Portrait guidance describe supported workflows.
