Set up two separate publishing connections: Larix Broadcaster sends your phone’s camera feed to the relay’s ingest URL and credential; the relay then sends that feed to YouTube using the RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. The keys are not interchangeable. Because relay setup varies by product, use the relay provider’s exact instructions for its application path, port and authentication.
How the two-hop stream works
- Phone to relay: Larix publishes to the relay’s ingest endpoint, using the protocol and credential supplied by the relay administrator.
- Relay to YouTube: The relay publishes to YouTube’s ingest address with the YouTube stream key for the broadcast.
- End-to-end check: Test the entire path and check YouTube’s stream health before the event.
Do not enter YouTube’s destination key in Larix unless your relay has explicitly configured that same value as its inbound credential. The relay has separate input and output settings. The specific server, version, hosting environment, ports and authentication scheme are not specified here, so there is no safe universal relay configuration or command.

Configure Larix to publish to the relay
- In Larix Broadcaster, open Connections and add a new publishing connection. Choose RTMP or RTMPS to match the relay’s advertised ingest protocol. Larix supports standard RTMP and RTMPS, but the relay must support the protocol you select.
- Enter the relay’s ingest address and its corresponding stream name, key or other credential. A typical RTMP address comprises a protocol prefix, server or domain, optional port, application name and stream name/key. Softvelum’s Larix documentation describes a full URL format that can combine the server/application address and stream name. If Larix provides separate fields, use them as intended; combine values only when the connection field expects a full URL.
- Confirm the hostname, port, application path and credential with the relay administrator. A sample URL in documentation is a format illustration, not a working endpoint or credential.
- Save the connection and start a short test broadcast. Confirm in the relay’s own interface or logs that it receives the phone’s stream.
Whether TLS terminates at the relay, which ports must be open, and how credentials are stored depend on the relay implementation. Check that product’s documentation rather than assuming a particular security feature or firewall rule.

Configure the relay to send to YouTube
- Open the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room and go to its stream settings. Reveal the RTMPS URL using the lock icon in the Stream URL field, then copy the URL and the stream key.
- In the relay’s output configuration, enter that YouTube RTMPS destination and the matching YouTube stream key. YouTube’s displayed default may be an RTMP address, so select or reveal the RTMPS variant when using secure transport. YouTube recommends RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP (YouTube encoder settings and bitrates).
- If the relay offers more than one YouTube ingest address, use the address that corresponds to the broadcast and protocol selected in Control Room. YouTube’s API distinguishes primary and backup ingest addresses; whether a relay can use both depends on that relay’s features (YouTube Live Streams API).
- Keep the relay’s inbound Larix credential separate from the YouTube output key. Restrict access to the YouTube key; if it is exposed, rotate it through YouTube.
Choose encoder settings for the phone and uplink
YouTube’s current guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution and frame rate, so select the matching row in YouTube’s live table rather than applying a single bitrate to every stream (YouTube encoder settings and bitrates).

Use only settings available in your Larix build and phone. Softvelum describes H.264/AVC video and AAC audio support; HEVC transmission over Enhanced RTMP is a premium feature on supported devices, not a capability to assume for every phone or Larix installation (Larix Broadcaster). Choose a target bitrate that fits both the applicable YouTube recommendation and the phone’s real upload capacity. Softvelum notes that poor network conditions can cause RTMP/RTSP frame loss and describes adaptive bitrate options in its Larix FAQ.
- Resolution and frame rate: Match the output to the phone’s capabilities, the available uplink and the corresponding YouTube recommendation.
- Video bitrate: Use YouTube’s current table for the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate; test upload capacity before the event.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval where available, and do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: Verify that audio is enabled and encoded as AAC or MP3 for the RTMP/RTMPS stream.
- Network adaptation: If the mobile connection varies, lower the target quality or bitrate, or use Larix adaptive bitrate options if available and appropriate.
Run a full-path preflight
- Start a representative test from Larix, including the movement, lighting and audio conditions expected during the real broadcast.
- Verify that the relay receives the stream and forwards it to the intended YouTube broadcast.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room for the incoming video and audio, then review stream health indicators for bitrate, codec, audio, keyframe or starvation warnings.
- Test close to the event and on a network comparable to the one you will use live. YouTube recommends testing the broadcast and monitoring stream health (YouTube encoder settings and bitrates; YouTube Live Streams API).
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Larix cannot connect to the relay | Incorrect ingest host, port, application path, protocol or credential, or the phone cannot reach the host. | Compare every field with the relay’s exact ingest details and test phone connectivity on the network in use. If publishing across WAN/LAN boundaries to a server on a local network, router NAT or port forwarding may be needed in that specific setup; it is not a universal requirement (Larix FAQ). |
| RTMPS or SSL error on the YouTube leg | The relay is using an RTMP URL, a mismatched address, or an incompatible port or TLS configuration. | Confirm the destination came from YouTube’s RTMPS field and begins with rtmps. YouTube says specifying port 443 can help with some SSL errors if the URL and encoder permit it. Keep the actual Control Room hostname and path; do not substitute an illustrative example (YouTube RTMPS help). |
| The relay receives video, but YouTube does not | The relay output destination or YouTube stream key is wrong, even though Larix-to-relay ingest works. | Check the relay’s output URL and YouTube key separately from Larix’s relay-ingest credential. Then inspect the broadcast’s YouTube status and health indicators (YouTube RTMPS help; YouTube Live Streams API). |
| Video appears, but there is no audio | The outgoing stream has no audio track, or its audio configuration is unsupported or disabled. | Check that the phone is capturing audio, that Larix is including it, and that the relay forwards it. YouTube’s API identifies noAudioStream as a stream configuration issue; its encoder guidance lists AAC and MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS (YouTube Live Streams API; YouTube encoder settings and bitrates). |
| Mobile video is unstable or drops frames | The selected bitrate or output quality exceeds what the phone’s current connection can sustain. | Reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate to fit the uplink, or use Larix’s supported adaptive bitrate option. Repeat the test under conditions similar to the live event (Larix FAQ). |
What to verify in a relay before relying on it
Relay products differ. Before an event, confirm from the chosen product’s documentation that it accepts Larix’s RTMP or RTMPS input and can forward to YouTube RTMPS. Also check where TLS terminates, how the two credential sets are handled, which ports and firewall rules are required, and whether it provides health metrics or backup output. YouTube’s primary and backup ingest addresses do not by themselves establish that a particular relay supports failover.
