What the Kindle Scribe 5.20.1 update adds
Amazon’s Scribe release notes for September 2026 say: “You can now add handwritten sticky notes in fixed layout eBooks or personal documents.” The notes also mention performance improvements, bug fixes, and other general enhancements, but do not describe them in detail. The documented feature is specifically for fixed-layout eBooks and personal documents. Amazon’s wording does not establish support for other book layouts or document types.
How to add a handwritten sticky note
- Check the device and software. Confirm that you have a Kindle Scribe and that its installed software is version 5.20.1.
- Open a supported item. Open a fixed-layout eBook or personal document.
- Choose an entry point. To start a note directly, open the writing toolbar and choose its sticky-note tool. To associate the note with selected text, select the text and use the action menu.
- Write the note. Follow the on-screen controls to enter your handwriting. Amazon’s release-note excerpt does not specify the controls shown after the initial selection, or explain the save behavior.
The release notes identify these two entry points but do not describe other differences between them.

Does Kindle 5.20.1 add sticky notes to every Kindle?
No. Amazon’s update listing includes version 5.20.1 for several Kindle models, but the handwritten sticky-note instructions appear in the Kindle Scribe release notes. A matching software version on another Kindle does not establish that it has the Scribe feature.
Amazon lists 5.20.1 for Kindle Scribe (3rd Generation), Scribe without Front Light, Scribe Colorsoft (1st Generation), Scribe 2024, Scribe 2022, Kindle Colorsoft (1st Generation), Kindle Paperwhite 12th Generation (2024), and Kindle 11th Generation (2024). These are version listings, not confirmation that every listed model supports handwritten sticky notes. How to check for or install version 5.20.1
Amazon says Kindle software downloads and installs automatically when the device is connected wirelessly. If you plan to update manually, first identify the exact Kindle model: Amazon advises users to match the update to their device, and directs manual downloads to a desktop computer. Then check Amazon’s model-specific update listing for the software available for that device. Do not install a Scribe update on another model just because its version number matches.

Amazon’s release-note excerpt confirms the feature and its two starting points, but does not spell out the remaining on-screen steps or how notes are saved.
