To check your Kindle’s software, open All Settings > Device Options > Device Info. Compare the installed version with the entry for your exact Kindle model and generation on Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page. Updates normally arrive automatically over Wi-Fi; if yours has not, Amazon also documents a manual update using a computer and USB cable.
Check your Kindle’s model and installed software version
- On the Kindle, open All Settings > Device Options > Device Info. The screen shows device information, including the installed software version on supported models.
- On Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page, find the row for your exact model and generation and compare its listed version with the one on your device.
There is no single latest software version that applies to every Kindle: Amazon lists versions by device family and generation, and the page can change. If the menus on your older Kindle differ or you are unsure which model you own, use Amazon’s Kindle identification guide to identify it before selecting an update.

Let the Kindle update over Wi-Fi
Kindle software updates normally download and install automatically when the e-reader is connected wirelessly. Connect it to Wi-Fi and allow the update to finish. Amazon describes these free updates as including general improvements and performance enhancements; it does not state a quantified performance result.

Choose between automatic and manual updating
| Update path | Use it when | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic over Wi-Fi | The Kindle can connect to Wi-Fi and the update arrives automatically. | The Kindle connected to Wi-Fi. |
| Manual over USB | The update has not downloaded automatically and you want to install it from Amazon’s model-specific file. | A computer, the correct update file for your Kindle model, and a suitable USB charging cable. |
Amazon’s manual instructions refer to the Kindle’s charging cable, including the cable supplied with the device; they do not establish that you need to buy a new one.
Manually install an update with a computer
Use only the update file for your exact Kindle model. Amazon’s software updates page provides the model-specific downloads and identifies the supported version.

- On a computer, download the update file for your exact Kindle model from Amazon’s software updates page. Confirm the model and generation first; do not use a file intended for another Kindle.
- Turn on the Kindle and connect it to the computer with the charging cable.
- Drag the downloaded update file onto the Kindle drive and wait for the transfer to complete.
- Safely eject the Kindle from the computer. For Kindle Scribe, Amazon specifies using the on-screen Disconnect option.
- Disconnect the cable. On the Kindle, open the Menu icon and select Settings. Open the Menu icon again, choose Update Your Kindle, and confirm.
- Wait for the update to complete. Amazon says the screen displays “Your Kindle is Updating” and the device restarts afterward.
If Update Your Kindle is unavailable or the menus differ, check that the file matches your exact device and consult Amazon’s instructions for that model. The documented steps do not establish that every Kindle generation has identical menu labels.
